News Community Update (01/05)

Sure, if you're working on something that requires little to no collaboration, I can see how you might be as productive as being sat at your desk. Tell that to me though, who has two young children that aren't at school at the moment, one of which is severely autistic and needs 24/7 care. Tell that to me, who's wife is a front-line nurse helping to fight this thing - who comes home exhausted every day.

Well said that man. Sounds a bit like my house. Kids are older, and that makes it a bit easier, but cabin fever frayed nerves are only one house chore away. Anyway, keep enjoying the galaxy Captain Coverdale ;)

Here's one. Space legs confirmed!

Silly, that's from NMS ;)

Even if it's disappointing, I expected this considering the current situation in the world. Take your time and make the New Era the best it can possibly be. I'll be right there when it launches, hopefully on a next generation console by then. :)

Was expecting this.

Only positive thing is that they are still planning to reveal stuff this summer.

If they delay the reveal it will be really, really, really, really disappointing though...

Hang on, since me and my colleges have been working from home productivity has been through the roof. Without the encumbrance of commuting and needless in-office discussions our company has 'seen the future' and are moving to making working from home the norm. I'd take a long hard look at anyone who works sedentary, but isn't 'producing' during this this COVID-19 pandemic... 🧐
Seriously FDev, give the workers the equipment and support to work from home and you'll see the rewards!
Well that's good. But this is missing some key parts of life at the moment. Employees who may be sick in some form so a workforce reduced in capacity. Families with children at home needing support for home schooling. I work from home most of the time but normally I don't have to deal with a child needing support in the day with schoolwork or family needing support etc.
I am much less productive than normal due to external circumstances.
You may be lucky to have colleagues with no external negatives on their time or where they have other family members working with children and supporting older family members allowing them to work 100%. Just recognise there are many different situations for different people maybe?

To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

The delay is totally understandable given the circumstances. "Incredible new ED experience" is a bold statement. I truly hope Frontier delivers something incredible that will revive ED on current platforms and the Playstation 5, new Xbox.

ED development slowed to a dying snail's pace after Horizons when the company had to raise cash by selling a large chunk of its shares to Chinese mobile games giant Tencent, and David Braben lost voting control.

No such problem on Frontier's mobile-style animal park games, though.

Frontier is financially in a strong position with multiple successful franchises. It's bad to give Tencent any influence in a company though.

Frontier did deliver major updates post-Horizons such as Beyond and improved the newbie game experience. This year is little new content though.

Tencent own 8.7% of shares which gives them little in the way of influence compared to say someone who owns 33.2%

That's not how it always works, it's more complicated then that.
I've got only a couple FDev shares compared to these guys but If I were to inject/loan a substantial sum into the company you bet my vote would carry more weight then my ammount of shares would grant me.
A bit simplified but shares aren't the only factor playing a role.

what happens next time FD gets short of cash? Like this next year with no new game release?
FDev have £40m in cash.

This upcoming financial year for FDev has the launches of Planet Coaster Console Edition and Elite Dangerous New Era (see the OP), plus the published-launches of two third-party games. The Formula 1 management game is scheduled for the following financial year, and the Warhammer RTS the year after that.

With all that free time you have you should really do some reading.

That's an interesting take on events that happened up to 2017 when Tencent bought shares in Frontier Developments. Have you any sources for those claims regarding cashflow and David Braben taking millions out?

It's pretty save to assume that Tencent has injected funds into the company and push their weight around, that's how many investors work, they want to see profit in the end.
How much influence they have is hard to assess though, many transactions are made not easily noticable by the public unless you realy dive into a company's financial reports.

FDev's audited financial reports are public:

I'm aware but lets not forget that cash injection was three years ago and since then there has been a section of the forum that wants to blame Tencent for every stumble the game has had since then.

As if Frontier has never had development challenges before then and Tencent is in the business of injecting cash into companies and seeking to have products delayed.

I'm sure Tencent wouldn't promote delaying a product if they were interested in that aspect of a company, they're not.
They only look at the numbers, as long as Fdev is making a profit and grows, which they do, Tencent is satisfied.
I don't see Tencent getting involved in the actual development or releae date of a product made by the company they invest in, the estimated profit or revenue for each fiscal year is much more importand to them.

FDev's audited financial reports are public:

Please, concpiracy? I took you smarter then that.
Those anual reports show their global numbers, there's no specification whatsoever about who did what regarding financial contributions, simply because privacy is protected by the law.
If I were to inject let's say 10 million into Fdev, you realy think my name or how much I invested would be at display in an anual report, I surely hope not.
