Elite Dangerous need to get serious about Cross Platform.

I was honestly shocked that ED didn't jump on crossplay the second Sony announced they were allowing it for it finally for all games. While PC wouldn't feel a massive benefit from it, the change for consoles would be huge; they've always complained about having rather empty Open experiences.

I keep holding my breath that eventually FDev will take advantage of the situation and finally give us cross play between all the consoles, but so far... nada.

Honest question, considering the war is won through the BGS and so far as I know kills don't actually matter, wouldn't BGS wars be consistently won by the side that spent the least time trying to shoot the other all things otherwise being equal?

Indeed, that's how I play & why I favour cross play. If I am antagonistic towards a stranger they can switch to solo & just carry on fighting against me there. If I cannot meet them nothing changes. But if I can meet them & find common ground, I win all future battles and so do they ;)

OK, let's take a look.

Sony said that they are OK with going cross platform. Per business reasons maybe they aren't making money versus other competitors. Now some want Frontier to go cross platform.

Sony PS4 ( have an ED account with them) and Xbox have a limited HOTAS which is the same as their game pad controllers just moving the buttons around. Very restrictive. PC players have awesome HOTAS choices (some very expensive) plus lots of add-ons with instantaneous voice commands no console has access to. PC's can even change the color of their console. Then add in PC keyboard/mouse players in the tradition of the Elite games who think that they respond faster than the latest greatest HOTAS. They are probably right as a mouse used wisely is a lot faster than a HOTAS. Add in expensive VR headsets the consoles cannot do. I bought the PS4 Pro hoping for PSVR. It never happened.

So take your PS4 or Xbox up against them? You will lose big time. What we are talking about here is players like me who own several PC accounts then want to fly my PS4 account in the same instance. Great for me with options but players only having a console account will lose out. There is that balance thing Frontier has always been sensitive about.

So at this time don't ask for cross platform. Worse case in a console per a PC if you get it you currently will just die faster. Six years playing ED and 30 years playing all the previous versions tell me that I am wrong.

Regards

I'm all for players from all platforms that can use the same game.
What I'm not crazy about is when different player factions from different platforms go against each other in a war or an election where you cant see them or combat them as they are on a different platform.
Recently we lost our station and control of a system of a PC player faction to a PS4 player faction in an election/war . How do you fight a "player faction" if you cant see them as they are on a different platform. The reality now is that now they know they can steam roll us, They will look to take the rest of our hard fought and worked for systems as well like a greedy take take take cancer faction. They cant have the rest of the galaxy but they have to prey on our systems and we are unable to interact with them in game.
This rubbish needs to be sorted out and is ruining mine and other players in our groups gameplay.
Either
1. Make xbox, PS4 and PC all have their own galaxy to work in and interact separately
or
2 Make cross platform a reality so all platforms can see each other in game and it becomes a level playing field

I like playing against AI and I like playing against human player groups, but how do you compete with a human player group you cant see or have combat with.

Frontier have done this on the cheap to grab the console dollars and I get that , greed is good. But for game play it totally sucks as there is no game balance.
Either you make cross platform a reality like every one can see everyone like in other cross platform games i.e. sea of thieves. or give each platform its own server to interact with.
Its only a computer server. its not hard and your making a bundle of cash supporting a galaxy. get it done.

Really, we were in open all weekend and didn't see any of your squad. Maybe it's time to stop moaning and actually play the game.

Git gud?

As said already though, for BGS control you do not need to "see" the other side. Even if everyone is a PC player, one side may play at a different time (Los Angeles vs Moscow), or latency is poor at instancing (UK vs New Zealand), or both groups may be in Private Groups (start a thread about removing PGs and Solo too please), so it's kinda irrelevant you lost to a PS4 group.

What you should do is either put in more effort, or ally/call on other groups to help you BGS more.

Saying all that, i am not adverse to cross-platform as an option. There's a number of PS4 (and Xbox) games already doing this, see spoiler below, so technically it's possible; and the arguement about control schemes giving one side an advantage is kinda moot, given PC players have a wide range of controls already (i play on PC with a PS4 DualShock controller + KB), and BGS is not combat (and "PvP" combat is a minority activity, so controller advantage would be rare).
FDev do need to sort out names and naming systems (on PC and PS4 i am both "Stinja" exactly), and possibly purchases, although Arx was probably implemented to help there.

I agree with you. Crossplatform would be a great step to making the game more lively, combining player communities, and creating that emergent content.

Yeah the solo/pg people and their "but I'll still be invisible and maybe time zones and netcode/instancing and blah blah blah so why bother because any change that helps open is bad" mentality will naysay. But several negatives don't mean that a positive change is superfluous.

While we've seen much gnashing of teeth with regard to eliminating modes has anyone actually opposed crossplay specifically?

I have, others have. You see the same excuses against it as you do for open because, I think, perceived shifts more towards MMO features are viewed as bad by the "single player" groups. Obviously not by all, but it's there

I'm not seeing how those arguments would apply. The reason for maintaining the modes was choice in level of engagement with other players, but those that chose open are chosing to maximize that, and cross platform play would increase that potential. And the argument that instancing prevents policing a system for BGS purposes isn't an argument against crossplay so much as it's an argument against the efficacy of the tactic with or without cross play.

I'd love to see arguments applied to cross play specifically though. The closest we've come here is noting that it's not necessary to mount a capable BGS defense. That's not the same as calling it a negative. Most here seem to look at cross play itself as a positive.

The issue is stuff like framerate & controller choice.
