VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

I'd hate to see VR dropped. It is one of the huge draws to this game, and if I am going to demo VR for someone, Elite is my 'goto' option. Never failed to get an OMG moment out of the person. I use it myself just to relax sometimes, cruising an asteroid field in my vulture or just 'pad blocking' watching station traffic. So, huge loss if they drop it.

That being said, the majority of the time I don't play in VR. Mainly because I can't usually devote a block of few hours of uninterrupted time that VR requires. It's a huge PITA pulling off the headset to check an email, look at my sons homework, flip screens to pay a bill, etc. I find it very jarring to lurch back and forth between two realities.

I would greatly miss VR support, but I'd probably still play.

And competing against SC when it gets 'finished'. <snort!> HAHA ! Yeah, sure.. Let me know when it is, and I'll dig up my account credentials so I can play from my retirement home in orbit... around Mars.

I mean it is there also but the main point ls that in the dedicated part of the steam page thats for vr hardware theres nothing for odyssey

Oh I see what you mean. Still, it could be due to specs not being finalized yet, they might not yet know all of the specific headseats they are going to support as there are some new ones around now.

It comes down to what legs are and how they are implemented. If legs are an entirely separate entity that you would do in long sittings separate from flying, that's one thing. If legs are intertwined with the gameplay, so that you continually have to remove your headset and then put it back on, it would be untenable to play like that.

If legs is basically just CQC then that's fine, but if they are like SRVs or, worse, used more than SRVs it would make playing in VR a real misery.
I think that as long as the amount of time you spend on your legs is more than a few minutes it should be ok. Spend say 20 minutes flying (fairly average) with your headset on, then land, take it off and spend another 20 minutes on foot doing whatever (less than that and people are going to wonder why do FPS at all). You basically put on/take off your VR headset like you would your flight helmet.

That doesn't necessarily mean that VR won't be supported. I would be shocked if FD dropped support for VR, given how many people play this game in VR and the fact that it's one of the best VR games out there.

When the game first launched VR was the hot new thing so it made sense to advertise that. Now it's not such a hot new thing, so it's probably less of a priority for their marketing now. It's also possible that they don't want to commit to supporting new VR headsets, but will keep legacy support for Rift/Vive/etc.

VR is the main reason I'm still playing this game, if they drop VR support I'll stop playing and I don't think I'll be alone. But I don't think it's time to panic.
So... I would love to play in VR, but the freaking galaxy map never works right and I have to take off the headset. Does anyone know how to get around this?

VR? Why no response frt om Fdev???

Fdev, can we have a reply please to quell our VR concerns? Or have you suddenly realised you have made yet another blunder.

Don't use the mouse, set up keybindings for your HOTAS. It's a pain, but once you get it set up right it works a treat.
But how do you type in a system you want to route to? I get panning and rotating, but usually i just need to type a system in to get where I want to go.

Just gotta touch type / peer outta the headset for that. Or use pass-through if it has it.

And pray loudly for a virtual keyboard in the meantime ;)

Yeah hopefully they may be waiting to see how demanding it is so could be directly ties to minimum specs as well

Just noticed that myself. Well then... I wasn't keen on legs to begin with, but no VR for the rest of the stuff? Yeah I'm out.
I've always been a proponent of legs, but like you, if legs update removes VR, I'm offski.

Yup, the moment VR support is dropped is the moment I stop playing.
Reading through this thread, well, it didn't take long for certain people to switch from blind uninformed cheering back to blind uninformed doomsaying.

I think everybody should chill the hell out.

VR flying will still be a thing. VR legs would be insufferable, like all VR games is if this part is not in VR, I'm fine with that.

More importantly - you are once again arguing about something that is a year away and with no official info posted. DD's being DD I guess...
I'm delighted with what the "announcement" today indicates is in the games future. However, I'm also wary of the possibility that VR may not be part of the future of elite, so I am probably one of those people you refer to...

In my opinion, I'm not doomsaying, I'm lobbying... I'm celebrating the content that was unveiled today, but I'm also letting it be known how important a part of elite VR is to me. I do this in the hope that if VR was, and that is an "if", planned to be axed, with sufficient upswelling of public opinion in support for VR, we could sway Frontier to give VR a reprieve. This is called customer feedback.

There's not much doomsaying there's a lot of people saying "if true im out" i think generally people just want confirmation so are adding their voices to the subject to try get some info out of fdev. Shouldnt be too tricky for them to confirm its still there in some capacity.
Very much this, I'm not doomsaying, but I am being vociferous in my support for VR continuance in the game / opposition to its removal from the game.

But how do you type in a system you want to route to? I get panning and rotating, but usually i just need to type a system in to get where I want to go.

Aside from touch typing, you can always copy/paste the system name if you're using external tools.

I add my voice for VR support. I dropped Elite year ago and was excited after the trailer, just to find out that VR support is not confirmed yet. VR is amazing in Elite and I can not imagine playing it on flat screen again

some basic a to b to c here:
  • No Man's Sky was a wreck at 1.0, but as of 2.x series, is in a good place, they converted from DirectX to Vulkan, then added VR.
  • Star Citizen is a wreck, right now, it doesn't matter when it comes out if ever, but its Alpha IS out now, like it or not.
  • If tiny Hello Games with 12 people can convert NMS to Vulkan and add VR support, there's no reason to think that CIG, with over 500 employees, can't also do it.
  • It is confirmed from CIG that they are indeed implementing Vulkan, the outline goes like this: They are adding Vulkan support along side DirectX, once Vulkan is implemented, DirectX is getting dropped. They have the first layers of it finished now." They also said that VR support was indeed going to come once Vulkan is done.
  • If Hello games can do it, CIG can as well, doesn't matter when the game is released, if ever, features get added all the time.
  • Frontier have consistently added features to the game in the past few years that interact poorly with VR. FSS, DSS. etc,
  • Basic VR friendly features like dimming cabin lights have been ignored by Frontier for years now.
  • The Steam page doesn't list VR currently, that could change if they are not removing VR support.
  • Adding space legs would requires a lot of VR work, work that it FEELS that Frontier is disinclined to do.

If Frontier can't do something Hello Games and CIG did/doing, and this drama is solved by a simple one liner from Frontier, what does it say about what we can expect from Odyssey? They are needlessly worrying VR players that VR is getting removed by this.... unless they are.

That's plenty of reason to worry for nothing.

So, Out with it Frontier, a simple "We are not dropping VR Support" to put this matter to bed.

And if you are dropping VR......... well, this ain't gonna be pretty, is it?

Not to derail the thread but, what is the issue with the FSS? I've been using it no issues on my end but am curious as to what is supposedly not right about it.
