The thing is if we only get to walk around on planets what´s the point? We already have SRV´s.... I all wanted is to be able to walk around my Ship and such and I know many other Players that want that as well.

See I'm the opposite. I can't even begin to understand the fascination with walking around your ship - it's something that I'd do once. Ditto the insistence from some that it will only be worthwhile if we have to walk from our ship to the planet's surface rather than a fade-to-black. To me it's like saying 'I never leave the house because I don't like my door handle.'

I had the same thought when people complained about no bridge view in the FC - sure, it would be nice to see once, maybe twice, but then ....

Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

That unfortunately has just killed The new dlc for me. If @Tim Smith is correct I will be able to fly in VR to all current planets but not to any new worlds.
I am assuming that I will be able to fly towards a new planet, then have to log out, take off my vr headset, plug in a set of headphones and mic, reload the game and only then be able to fly towards the planet surface.
As a premium beta back I have to say I am disappointed at this backward immersion breaking content.

Realism aside, it comes down to what people wanted from Atmo planets in this game. I'd buy it if you're telling me that an atmosphere planet in this game means a regular planet with a blue sky and that's the only major difference, and that ELWs/other types are totally off limits. In fact, I wouldn't care that I can't fly on those planets without VR since I wouldn't really be seeing anything that I don't see anywhere else (except a blue sky instead of stars), but that's just not really what I thought folks were asking for with them.
The number of people who said "we don't even have atmospheric landings like in FFE" over the years, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that "blue skybox" was all they wanted, given that Horizons had far more actual surface gameplay and content than FFE had...

Mostly [1] lifeless rocky/ice worlds still gives a fair bit of potential for weather and more varied terrain, which could add more gameplay than just doing the same thing on an atmospheric planet - of course, the trailer so far as I can tell didn't actually show any weather or varied (i.e. non-heightmap) terrain so I'm not actually expecting those to be in it.

[1] The current no-atmosphere worlds aren't all entirely lifeless, technically. But close enough.

Assuming Odyssey and Horizons aren't two entirely separate games, then at least it looks like we get a graphics buff across the board, so hopefully we'll enjoy better lighting and textures (and maybe even better surface procgen) in Horizons as well, which we can enjoy in VR.

Ship interiors need to be clarified asap! Massive selling point of the DLC!

This will hopefully be the case. Me and my husband wont be buying Odyssey but we will still benefit so yay! :)

For everyone annoyed about no Odyssey VR at launch. The key words here are 'at launch', that doesnt mean that they dont plan to add it later.

You know you're wrong. They definitely would not put in all the effort required for 2.8% of the playerbase that enjoys VR, believe me. VR in Elite is dead. You may still enjoy it in Horizons and such, but won't be able to land on planets with atmospheres. Ice planets? Better graphics? And so on, you name it. It will be just like playing the base game in a Horizons world with Engineers, and we all know how that sucks in comparison.

O7,
🙃

If that really is how it is, I'm surprisingly OK with it. I play this game in VR the way I'd really act if I owned a spaceship- flying something that isn't too big or gaudy and stuff like that. The reality is that if I were really some guy with a spaceship, I wouldn't be randomly going down to planets, breaking out a gun, and getting into firefights. Any combat would be in my ship. So for me, the gameplay being separate works really well if that's how they handle it AND if it doesn't limit my experience in VR during a session by constantly trying to send me to these planets. I can treat Odyssey as a separate game, an FPS when I feel like it, and keep treating ED like a "I own a space ship! Whee!" simulator.
