I did think that, but it is a very janky solution and might fall foul of the EULA, and the outcome is less than perfect, see StuartGT's other post elsewhere answering this question.
Cheers for the answers, Tim.
"For launch" implies further information. Is VR support being developed for an Odyssey-update post-launch?
VR is a major feature for Elite - it's widely regarded as one of the best VR games available - so axing VR support from future expansions would be extremely unwise imo. VR would be unfortunately be added to the perceived ever-growing-pile of abandoned features.
As Horizons will still support VR, what happens when one wants to play in VR: logout of Odyssey then login to Horizons?
Considering the enormous goodwill and enthusiasm yesterday's announcement brought it'd be very disappointing to apply the handbrake. 2 steps forward, 1 step back etc. Killing the golden goose is counter productive.
If production is tight with the Elite devteam being fully utilised already, then this is a good reason as any for FDev top-brass to expand the devteam further.
2+1/2 years development with a "100+ team", and remove a core feature?
And when I think about the PR cluster frack this has turned into...
People pushing for VR support in Odyssey - careful what you wish for.
I mean if you push it hard enough, VR might come with Odyssey at launch... but in early 2022
Being honest, they can do what they fracking want now.
So you are offering me a hypothetical choice of a game I don't want to play VSa game I DO want to play but delayed
.......... IF FD said VR not at launch but as soon as it lands we will be putting our efforts.into VR support I would be fine with that but that does not sound like the case here
You are right, instead they use lots of "weasel words" to "leave it open", like they did with the "only one SRV at launch" of horizons.
So, i'm speculating here, but i presume if you are wearing a headset, even if VR isn't supported, you'll still be able to swivel your head around and look around right? It just won't have all the compensation code in and won't rotate the head of your commander's model?
If it means that your VR headset won't enable you to look around, then yeah, i can imagine that will suck giant donkey marbles.
If VR is not supported, it simply won't display onto the headset. The only way this could be achieved is through something like a desktop viewer program looking at the window of Odessy, which wouldn't be stereostropic so would be a flat image in the headset, which would not move, and as such likely induce nausea because the players inner ear would sense the movement but the eyes wouldn't verify that movement.
I have to give FDEV credit though for announcing the lack of VR support early. Imagine if it had been something you only discovered after buying the expansion.
They only responds because the VR community has been up in arms about the moniously absent mention of VR, in conjunction with other indicators that VR wasn't on their agenda in recent updates. Indeed I had PM'd Tim about this yesterday.
