ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

As has been exemplified with PSVR several times over in this thread, it also does not mean that it is going to happen. That is where issue lies.
I disagree- if we're discussing semantics then it infer it will come at a later time.
The point is- they made a decision and explained. So, again, chill.

Personally, I'd rather FD had concentrated on adding more stuff to do with and in our ships that wouldn't have been such an issue with VR rather than spending time and resources adding an FPS section. There's a big list of stuff that was discussed in the DDF that could have been used to make new DLC and a huge amount of it would have happily been VR compatible, but for some reason we get a first person shooter instead, not sure why, it's not like there aren't dozens already available, what on earth is it going to bring to that table that enhances elite rather than just being a generic add on?

I suppose we each have our own priorities regarding what we want clarified at this point.
Mine can be summarised in one word:

WATER.

Waterworlds, terrestrial worlds with oceans, mostly-arid worlds with lakes... whatever. Anything more than what we have already seen, a dry barren planet with an atmosphere.

How many previously unlandable planets will become landable?

I'm mostly alright with ship interiors being added in 4.X or whatever. It would be difficult to engineer gameplay loops that don't detract from what players can do from their seat. We can already control every current system from the cockpit. Would FDev remove functionality? So I have to jog down to the power plant to reboot? Or would they add new functionality to other parts of the ship?

Either way, ship interiors would require reworking the entire game. Maybe Fdev should start small with Odyssey simply adding a new, partitioned gameplay mode.

On a related note, I really hope that VR still works in the Odyssey game client. It's understandable that they are unable to get VR working for the 2021 release of the first person mode. But I'm sure there will be other features in the update that VR users could enjoy, as people have already said.

I understand that for a small number of players who play in VR, the lack of its support is a disappointment. But it is extremely difficult to make it for such a thing as space legs

No Man's Sky did that

But it's not the coding the problem, rather combining a seated game with hotas and standing gameplay with VR controller. But the question is: so why?

Agree, this is so much more important. Let's complete the planetary landings... I would love to see cities, weather, etc.

It's not a generic add-on, it was in the Elite 10 year roadmap and David Braben himself stated a long time ago that he envisioned Elite with features such as this one.

So, it's not random content, it was always in the roadmap plan for this game.

Be informed, peeps.

pc 2d player of elite will play their newfps gameplay
No Man's Sky did that

you can play seated in vr fps style game and you can change very easily your controller while in game... do you really know vr?

VorpX anyone?
I did think that, but it is a very janky solution and might fall foul of the EULA, and the outcome is less than perfect, see StuartGT's other post elsewhere answering this question.

Cheers for the answers, Tim.

"For launch" implies further information. Is VR support being developed for an Odyssey-update post-launch?

VR is a major feature for Elite - it's widely regarded as one of the best VR games available - so axing VR support from future expansions would be extremely unwise imo. VR would be unfortunately be added to the perceived ever-growing-pile of abandoned features.

As Horizons will still support VR, what happens when one wants to play in VR: logout of Odyssey then login to Horizons?

Considering the enormous goodwill and enthusiasm yesterday's announcement brought it'd be very disappointing to apply the handbrake. 2 steps forward, 1 step back etc. Killing the golden goose is counter productive.

If production is tight with the Elite devteam being fully utilised already, then this is a good reason as any for FDev top-brass to expand the devteam further.
2+1/2 years development with a "100+ team", and remove a core feature?
And when I think about the PR cluster frack this has turned into...

People pushing for VR support in Odyssey - careful what you wish for.
I mean if you push it hard enough, VR might come with Odyssey at launch... but in early 2022 🙃
Being honest, they can do what they fracking want now.

So you are offering me a hypothetical choice of a game I don't want to play VSa game I DO want to play but delayed

.......... IF FD said VR not at launch but as soon as it lands we will be putting our efforts.into VR support I would be fine with that but that does not sound like the case here
You are right, instead they use lots of "weasel words" to "leave it open", like they did with the "only one SRV at launch" of horizons.

So, i'm speculating here, but i presume if you are wearing a headset, even if VR isn't supported, you'll still be able to swivel your head around and look around right? It just won't have all the compensation code in and won't rotate the head of your commander's model?

If it means that your VR headset won't enable you to look around, then yeah, i can imagine that will suck giant donkey marbles.
If VR is not supported, it simply won't display onto the headset. The only way this could be achieved is through something like a desktop viewer program looking at the window of Odessy, which wouldn't be stereostropic so would be a flat image in the headset, which would not move, and as such likely induce nausea because the players inner ear would sense the movement but the eyes wouldn't verify that movement.

I have to give FDEV credit though for announcing the lack of VR support early. Imagine if it had been something you only discovered after buying the expansion.
They only responds because the VR community has been up in arms about the moniously absent mention of VR, in conjunction with other indicators that VR wasn't on their agenda in recent updates. Indeed I had PM'd Tim about this yesterday.

English translate for you. "While in Star Citizen you can also explore space stations and even the interior of spaceships, Elite players are only allowed to stretch their legs on the planet itself. Nevertheless, this is a big step."

Gamestar is a major publication. If they wrote it, then the players should take it into account, especially with the complete lack of adequate communication from the FD. This is why the FD should confirm or deny the information as soon as possible. And yes, it's a shame in 2020 not to make at least ship interiors, while even fans do them in a few hours of picking 3D max after work, it's a thing that a huge number of players are waiting for. I'm surprised you need to explain this at all, mr white knight

lol "White Knight", how old are you? I am not interested in platitudes just technology. I was curious, you seem to be eager to base a lot of anger on an unsubstantiated report when every other press release has been unable to add any further details. Exploring ship interiors wasnt mentioned on the featurelist, the video or any other announcement so why would it be a disgrace even if it didnt appear in Odyssey which is obviously geared toward planet-side missions and combat? Maybe it is being saved for another announcement to tide us over the next 9 months or perhaps a different DLC, you know to pay back all that development time. How about get back to realpolitik?

Just to add to this, VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons!
Thanks Tim.
I'm guessing the crucial phrase here for VR fans is "at launch" .
I'm wondering if my PC LEP extends to my PS4 account using the same frontier account?

Well we really wont know that until it's released will we, the point still stands though, there is far more content that could have been added that would have been a better fit. Stay informed indeed.
