Post Your Support for Elite Odyssey to have VR Support.

Because it's the preferred and familiar way to play the game.
If they dropped HOTAS and M/K support would you say "Why not just use an XBOX controller?"
If they dropped multimon support would you tell those who bought three monitors for Elite "Just enjoy it on the one?"
If they stopped supporting on PC would you tell people "Why not just like... play on PS4?"

I've been playing elite for so long there's muscle memory and familiar actions that I've been doing for years. Turning to look with my head to track a pirate in a haz rez, looping around a station looking up to track the time to arrival until it reaches 6 seconds. Judging distance based on the 3d effect that VR provides, ducking down to look through the remaining glass on my broken canopy to continue to track my target.

Just like how I use my HOTAS and have familiar and expected controls with it that, should I suddenly be forced to use a gamepad would feel awful and clunky and just not fun. On top of that, the experience itself suffers, going from being seemingly surrounded by the game world, the scale and the atmosphere, to just viewing it on a monitor is a complete downgrade to the experience for those who have been used to VR for years.

We CAN play on a monitor. The experience, however, will suffer greatly for it.
Actually, yes, I would.

Not having VR support dropped my mood from hyped to disappointed. I didn't expect extremely fleshed out VR support, I am used to that, all new things had VR as an afterthought at most, but discontinuing VR is disheartening. Will I quit? Well, I have LEP so I will get the expansion, and I will log in from time to time I guess, to meet friends and chat a bit, maybe make a screenshot or two. But since I've flown in VR I don't want to go back to looking at a picture of flying through space, and don't enjoy it much.

There are worse things than a computer game, but Elite is my escape from them - I put on the headset and all problems are gone for a while, I fly through space. At least for now.

Is there some official post that there is not going to be VR support? I'm seeing people talk about it but I can't find the actual post.

I'm going to be so annoyed if it is true; I don't give a crap about walking around first person but if they drop support completely within the next era I'll be demanding a refund for my LEP. I bought a game that supported VR and I expect that to remain the case.

Sighs... Ive been gone from here a long time... having pretty much given up on the direction the game was taking... it was like watching your beautiful child growing up into a bratty teenager and being powerless to prevent it! Lol
ive watched And supported as the game became more console orientated over the years and then development basically stopped (you know I’m right) whilst our money was used to fund dinosaur theme parks and zoos. I still payed for DLC and still supported because Elite Dangerous was MY game - the reason I spent thousands of pounds on a computer system and headsets And it’s given me thousands of hours of pleasure flying through a Virtual Galaxy.
But let’s be clear... Since the Alpha and a DK1 this was a VR game for me. I knew DB was never sold on the idea. I even travelled to Germany to have a beer with him at an event just to ask him about VR. Maybe the unwashed masses were just too slow in making VR mainstream and so unprofitable for Frontier, but I cannot understand how it came to this. It is a personal tragedy. Drama Queen - obviously but is it still true. A first world problem for sure, but it genuinely hurts.

My biggest fear was always that DB never really understood what he had unwittingly created by allowing a dev to tinker with the code and add 3D support from the outset. It was a hack that worked almost flawlessly from day one. But he just didn’t see the attraction. It was always a gimmick.

I am done with the game after all these years, not out of spite, but because its mismanagement (obviously just my opinion) makes me mad/sad (take your pick).

i will though be requesting my LEP refunded as I bought it exclusively to play in VR... at least minus the cost of the base game and horizons. Truth be told, I’ve more than got my money’s worth, but this feels like a betrayal of a game I love and not being able to be played in the way I love. Problem is, it’s not my game it’s his... it just felt like my game.

On the plus side, having not really played or taken an interest in other VR games, I took the plunge on the index, controllers and HL: Alyx
it was the first time outside of ED that I thought didn’t seem niche and that VRs time had finally come. It was breathtaking in the way flying your own spaceship for the first time was and I knew I was still right about VR being the future of gaming.

Short version :

my opinion... DB has ruined ED over the last few years through poor management and lack of development. It is though his game to do with as he wishes. VR rules. I’m done.

Well, that's your right. it's mine to disagree and think that's pretty foolish on top.
Fair. And in extension I can disagree with you and think the same of your opinion. An endless circle and there is no point continuing this particular exchange.

We know the reality of the situation and this was not a light decision for Frontier. They knew it was going to cost them customers and they did it anyway. I dare say that this means the impact is not going to be as big as claimed by the community based off, well... Nothing. I am still waiting for active VR player numbers. Considering FD keeps such numbers secret, VR or no, well...

It is quite likely that they were fully expecting this upset from the community. However, if the decision was made, they would have to say eventually. Honestly I am surprised they were honest so quickly.

I can only assume that the community theory, (and it is only a theory no matter how you might protest that), on the number of active VR players is wrong.

Note the word assume. I may be wrong myself. Any random player like yourself and I could be. Only FD knows the full facts.

No. I genuinely don't see why you can't just, like, not use VR?

There are worse things out there. Misunderstanding? Yes. Deliberate? No.

I've had a pretty rough life and frankly, having to switch from VR to a monitor for a video game is so insignificant to one's life quality that I am unable to see it as a problem, especially as you can just plug in your monitor and play it anyway.

That's why I can't offer sympathy. Because it really could be worse. I speak from experience!

Would you play on a 4" screen with the sound turned off with the next expansion and not moan if that was what the game specs were? That is what it feels like to people that have VR.

someone who has had the choice of VR taken out of his hands due to a messed up eye
I nearly lost an eye last year, so while we may be on seemingly unreconcilably opposing sides on the "VR in Elite" debate, and I find the unjustified vehemence you are showing VR players in this debate to be quite distasteful, you do have my utmost sympathy for your ophthalmic health condition.

My eye injury was a moments inattention at my workshop, but it was my fault, so the fact it still niggles me, that is on me, but if your eye condition is genetic/hereditary - that is a really tough break.

Unjustified? Okay, if you say so.

Considering the amount of times I've had people telling me people like myself should be ditched.

No. It's justified. Very, very justified.

Again. Nobody with defects cares if VR support happens. I dare say most of us hope it does. I know I do.

However, we too have been playing since day one, and that does mean we have just as much right to expect to continue to play as anyone else.

As it stands, everyone means everyone. It might not be how everyone thought it would work out, but it does include all current players.

Very true, and very eloquently presented. Having joined the community at the announcement of horizons, but only started playing in horizons beta, I totally agree with these sentiments, especially the shift in focus towards console players, but even as a space legs proponent, to me, this game is nothing without VR.

Thanks StarLightPL,

So they are dropping VR support completely (been around long enough to read through FDEV ); difficult / challenging means can't be bothered / won't make enough money). Absolutely gutted.

Oh well, when the expansion comes out I'll ask for my money back. So disappointed; like really, really disappointed. To me this is like someone smashing up my hobby. Well actually that is exactly what it is.

Please calm down. Remember to discuss the post not the poster.
You're quite right. I will be leaving this thread.

This last year has taught me there's far more important things in life than this. Far, far more important.

I only play ED in VR and while don't care about the legs introduction looking forward to other content such as more landable worlds and other cool stuff in this DLC

Also, unpopular opinion. Elite isn't The Best Game In VR Currently. It's still good in VR in 2020, but really, there are much better titles out there. Not "simulate milky way galaxy 1:1" titles, mind you, but there's no other "simulate milky way" in 2d either. If you need a refresher on current state of VR games, @Golgot made an excellent thread on the subject (btw. why isn't it in your sig Golgot?). There's also a nice VR rankings blog made by Anthony from VR365, well worth checking out:

In my opinion, current best game in VR is Half-Life: Alyx. The level of interaction, the beautifully and believably crafted world and support for knuckles finger tracking (if only for better immersion) is something which even my non-gaming wife appreciated since the very first scene. There are other great titles. Walking Dead Saints and Sinners or Boneworks (though I wouldn't recommend the latter to VR newbies). And old ports. VR gaming is far from the wasteland it was in 2016 when Elite was VR-king (Queen?).

I should do that as a quiet protest until they add support ;)

Thread is here if anyone wants ideas for VR gaming :)

Virtual Reality Reviews

Yeah one reason I’m not super bummed right now is that VR is actually in an alright place at the moment. I genuinely have more games than I can play (and a load of game jams, experimenting with the format, that I want to get to too ;))

I guess worst case, ED introduced me to VR, so I have to thank it for that ;)

(The better scenario is that I carry on enjoying VR gaming, and they add decent VR support post-launch :). Once all the grind has been nerfed a bit ;))
