Tim's statement makes it clear that they evaluated VR and rejected putting it in at launch:
They know how many of their customers use VR. They estimated how much time and money it would take. They rejected it for launch.
I think its important for players to understand that VR not being available 'at launch' is not necessarily the same as VR 'never being implemented', which is how a lot of people are seeming to react

This is a huge undertaking and I'm glad you're not spreading resources to VR which is only available in the PC version anyway. It's more important to get the game right, generate content and design the gameplay to be on a great foundation. The lack of base building is surprising but again, if it means a more polished and focused Odyssey experience then I support the decision. I personally can't wait to see what the overhaul has on offer and I will buy it immediately on release, no question about it.

I don't think that waiting for an undefined time will satisfy VR users, considering how long things have taken since Horizons launched. FD will be trying to roll out patches to fix bugs, working on new Odyssey features and with such a huge expansion will magically get things done pronto.

This is not having a go at you. I know what you mean, but I doubt we'll get VR again and I don't want to wait around with nothing but a hope and a prayer.

Greetings Commanders,

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

I'm not too disappointed by all that TBH. I mean I only use "poor man's vr" head tracking anyway, and find that is fine for me... though also, even if I had a full VR kit for flying and SRV driving and had to take it off when I switch to on foot, I wouldn't be that mad either. It would be kind of like taking off the flight suit helmet in real life order to go EVA. Totally agree that unless built from the ground up as a VR game it would be difficult to achieve well.

As for the no base building, also not too disappointed, I would not want it to be like NMS intricate mechanic anyway, but it WOULD be nice to have an ability to plonk a pre-fab unit with landing pad somewhere with cargo and module storage and maybe one or two ships. Kind of a mid way point to owning a fleet carrier.

Very excited for the new stuff, in addition to this I hope you are all working on increasing the breadth of existing features, such as more variety for biologicals and geologicals, more QOL improvements (multi purpose limpets, galaxy map improvements, better bookmarks, searching for market, etc.).

OK, I love VR but let's leave that aside for a moment.
Fdev, who has shown for more than 20 years that it knows how to make a space sim, is going to try to try to throw together an FPS (which they have zero experience with) and tack it onto ED? They could have just expanded what we already love: add some new planet tech, new ships, more SRV's, etc. fixed some of the broken stuff and I think everyone would be excited. SC has been trying that walking simulator crap with much more money for how long now? How is that working out for them? Fdev should have stuck with what they know. And now, no VR?
Sorry guys, I want my LTP refund!

Software engineering isn't free. VR hardware has changed, which means supporting it now is different than in 2015. What matters is how much today's VR hardware would cost to support. They evaluated and rejected it.

I refuse to believe they cannot crank in BASIC VR support. Even a lone modder did it on GTA 5 https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/vr-implementation-suggestion.546568/ . Nobody who plays VR is asking them INDEX support or other advanced VR features. I would even be ok to not have stereoscopy, but "no support at launch" without any further communication is typical damage control FD jargon.

After all the resources and time they say they diverted, does not reflect well on them at all.

That, good Sir, is not possible, as the funds have already been invested into the development of the recently announced F1 game, and they also have zero experience with that. Wonder if that one will have VR instead, if not, good luck.

O7,
🙃

I was given the impression it was an 'F1 management' game. I got to be honest I'm not sure what that means

They made an FPS with the Cobra Engine called the Outsider.

Sounds "great"... it´s Vive off, putting it away, headset on, change input and output settings to headset to leave the ship and the other way around to fly again?

I bought the LTP because FDev made it look like we could expect regular updates and because the game was a great VR-experience. I remember looking forward to walking around the ship in VR when FDev explained that the game was build for VR from the ground up and that the ships were prepared to be walked around in, back in the days of FDev releasing regular developer diaries during the original beta.

I got used to not having had any paid updates for years. Now, there is not even VR in their updates anymore and since they never enabled PS-VR though it´s been years since the release, I expect them to pull off the same rubbish on this update; this time on PC. 🙁

I was hoping for the update to bring back new life into the game. To me, this non-VR-update is the final nail the coffin of a game that I dearly loved.

My disappointment is well beyond words.

Well... it was fun while it lasted.

This is Cmdr Jägermeister signing off from Elite: Dangerous. 07 👋
