ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

Greetings Commanders,

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

This is a bad decision, really, no money.

Hmm so far Reddit poll states ~25% VR only Vs 75% 2d only. Over a thousand votes last I checked. One fourth isn't half bad 😝
LMAO you actually believe EVERY SINGLE ELITE DANGEROUS PLAYER actually participated in that? LOLOLOLOL

You know damn well that VR users flocked to that poll because of how riled up they are, and most standard users probably didn't even know the poll existed.

I wouldn't trust some biased reddit poll worth a damn.

ED is one of the few jewels in the crown of the VR portfolio. There is a very fat chance whoever owns an headset owns ED.

Even more related:
the same article said:
Update, May 6: I’ve had a lot of feedback about this piece over the past couple of days, many making valid arguments about virtual reality products or sales trends that I’ve missed/omitted from the piece above. None of them have done this better than my Forbes colleague, Joe Parlock, whose rebuttal to my story can be read here.

I’m experienced enough to hold my hands up when I’ve made a mistake, or at least not given an article as much research as I should have. I don’t think the virtual reality market is as healthy as many of its advocates suggest, but I should have done a better job of presenting a more balanced picture.
I dont even use reddit, i doubt most people do.
As with forums, it's a sample of users. Statistics tell us that samples are representative. There's a whole section of math dedicated to statistics and math couldn't care less about biases - it's just numbers.

Eh, they promised either of those? Well, except for ps4 because who cares?

Can you link the posts or claims please? No sarcasm here, i've stopped playing many years ago and probably missed that. Came back to try out VR because i finally got a top notch PC, heh, what an irony.
FlithyMick's comment wasn't really refering to promises, more people claiming to quit over a feature, but then staying and whining. This has happened with numerous features (promised or not). As for PS4 owners and the Cobra MK4, i'm happy to supply that information for you - slightly long :/ sadly.

So after the PS4 announcement, but 6 months(?) before the PS4 launch PS4 payers queried if the pre-order bonus for Horizons would include the Cobra MK4. Afterall both PC and Xbox players were offered this. The responses were:

12/12/2016, 8:48 AM: Gary Richards said: We are still working out the finer details of the PS4 Release and there'll be further announcements closer to the time.

24/11/2017, 3:23 PM: Lloyd Morgan-Moore said: Unfortunately I don't have any news to give you on this at the minute, but we haven't forgotten about the Mk IV for PS4 players!

27/06/2018, 8:42 AM: Lloyd Morgan-Moore said: I'm going to be chasing this up today, I'm aware how eager everyone is to get into the seat of the Mk IV [yesnod]

29/09/2018: Customer support said (link dead/wiped): We recommend PS4 users keep an eye on our social media channels for updates regarding the Cobra Mk IV

03/12/2019 5:45pm: Paige Harvey said: We have nothing to announce regarding the Cobra MK IV’s availability on PlayStation 4 at the current time.

8/4/2020 9:32pm: Tim Smith said: Currently, there are no plans for that at the moment.

===

Then links to "being unfair" (Fdev's words) to not offer the Cobra MK4 to Xbox cmdrs, but this doesn't seem to apply to us

The thread where FDev seemed to announce the Cobra MK4 offer to Xbox commanders:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/259478-Cobra-Mk-IV

Particularly this post by Zac Antonaci, where he says it's to give parity between Xbox and PC commanders on the offer.
This specifically is much more about the Xbox Commanders having the same opportunity as PC players had.

Then this follow-up post:
However, to be clear, if we didn't make this available for Xbox players it would have then become unfair to them (as they couldn't have purchased at that time).

Ultimately this should be a positive thing, for the Xbox Community answering the questions they have been asking about the Cobra MK IV but instead seems to be slipping into a debate about the finer points of shorter term promotional offers.

So not offered the same options, and no way whatsoever of getting the Cobra MK4, and FDev themselves stating to Xbox players about "fairness" if it was not offered to them (and the xbox offer was some months after the PC "exclusive" deal finished) - so no parity or fairness to PS4 players.

To not clog this threaad with offtopic replies, best if you query here if you want to know more: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/will-ps4-get-the-cobra-mk-iv.314330/

Be interesting to see what the PS5 / PSVR 2 does, and if PC media, developers and players give any more thought to them.
I doubt pc media would pay it any attention. That really doesn't matter though. The console market is big enough to not really be affected by happenings on the PC side.

But I don't feel like developers have ignored it. Just Fdev lol. Just off the top of my head, the two biggest titles that support VR regardless of platform (resident evil 7 and no man's sky) have supported psvr, with resident evil 7 vr support not coming to PC for a whole year after psvr.

To add, Dreams getting vr support is huge. Allow users to create their own VR game is neat. I cannot comment on it yet though because I'm not in the closed beta as it seems to be EU only for some reason.
