Thank You FDEV!!!

Understandable but my point is more the constant updates, communication and support from the devs.

Yep. My point is the playing area is much smaller, the mechanics involved are much simpler, players are strictly limited in where they can go and what they can do so it's presumably easier to just bang out updates.

Whats the community like do they lose their minds over everything that's ever said about the game ?.

Do they ban serial moaners from their forum just to keep the toxicity down ?.

Not at all. Bugs are addressed within days and the sim physics are better than any other racing sim. But the communication from the devs is top notch. You can tell that they actually love the game they've created and care about their community. I've actually raced with a few of the devs. It's not uncommon to see them in lobbies.

You're probably right about the game size though but there's no excuse for the lack of communication from Frontier.

As a reader of the above between @Sir Ganksalot and @Stigbob , I think you're both saying the same thing, from different perspectives. That is to say, I think you're both right about the angle you are pursuing, and it's nice to read a discourse between two nice forum people that aren't trying to rip out each others' throats!!

I probably sound like a big chocolate-nosed weirdo though for writing this, but it seemed worth pointing it out in a thread that has otherwise been quite feisty!

Cheers guys :)

You can't have this thread without this. It is the Law.

There was a time DBOBE used to be seen in game (not just the NPC) and the devs were more vocal. However things got more than a bit toxic. Some nutter (not forum member nutter I mean a nutter nutter) went on what can only be described as a massively creepy public obsession about his house. People had a blow out about one of the most communicative devs because she made a joke. You could set half the forum into a frothing rage by just mentioning the name of another dev.

That's just the stuff that was public and the mods/autodelete didn't squish, the PM's and moderated stuff was probably far worse. I've seen death threats against the devs here that were gone before I could report them. I had some comedy &*$£ follow me round the forum telling me to kill myself for months because by liking the game I was apparently breaking it, or something he wasn't very coherent.

Basically things got very silly and very personal and they took a step back, understandably I think.

This is an interesting read :

That kind of behaviour is ridiculous Bob, and I'm sorry you had to go through it, as well as obviously feeling for the Dev staff who were subjected to it. I'm guessing I was away from the game whilst that happened, but I can see why they're more reticent to post things if that was happening.

In light of this, I hope you didn't see my previous post as being a strange windup as it wasn't meant that way - I probably would not have posted the way I did if I knew there were nutcases like that around!

It's certainly a strange bunch that come here. And I hope those involved got what they deserved legally if you know what I mean. Cheers mate o7

Over video game spaceships of all things 🤷‍♀️.

As the article explains its only 0.1% of gamers who behave like that, but with three and a half million copies of ED sold that's 3500 of them.

It's a brave developer that takes on online open space with multiple play paths.
Yep.

Setting a game in space is a silly idea. (it's really large and empty, which are not usually good characteristics for a game world)
Setting a persistent multiplayer game in space is an even sillier idea because unless you seriously artificially restrict the play area (why did you set it in space then? a single planet is still pretty big!) it's tough to get people to meet up at all
Setting a persistent multiplayer game in space with both exploration and non-exploration professions "strongly supported" is even sillier because the scale management you need to make exploration work long-term completely conflicts with the scale management needed to have interesting non-exploration scenarios.

The surprise isn't that Elite Dangerous, in many respects, is seriously flawed - so were the previous games in the Elite series, after all. I'm not sure a non-flawed version is even theoretically possible without taking major chunks out of the concept [1]. The surprise is that they managed to get it released at all.

[1] Which is not to say that there aren't many areas where Frontier could improve on what there currently is without hitting theoretical limits. Obviously there's plenty of that too.

Fleet Carriers are a huge success. More than 13,400 listed on Inara. The minor issues will be ironed out over time.

True, but still quite frightening that people would be so blatant to make threats like this!! And as you say, over a videogame about spaceships! I guess there will always be weirdos in the world...!

You know what this forum is like, it doesn't matter if the glass is half-full, half-empty, completely full, completely empty, or containing exactly what everyone wants ... there's always someone who moans.
I'm not on here much. This sort of stuff is why. Granted I've been away from the game for about two and a half years (think that's when they nerfed Smeaton!) and only came back six weeks ago, but... the upshot of the complaints still seem to be the same as they were back then:

"The game is awful!!!"
(Why is it awful?)
"Because I can't do what I want to be able to do!"
(Well what is it you want to do?)
"I want to be able to -insert expectation here-"
(Okay, I just tried doing that, and I was able to do it?)
"But how long did that take you?"
(Erm, an hour or two?)
"YOU SEE?!?!?"
(See what?!??!)
"TWO HOURS... I HAVE A WIFE AND A JOB AND A FAMILY, I CAN'T SPEND TWO HOURS DOING THAT"
(Um, so what is it you wa..)
"I WANT FDEV TO FIX IT"
(Fix what exa...)
"I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GRIND"
(But that's not grinding that's just a way of earni...)
"IT SHOULD BE CALLED ELITE GRINDEROUS"
(I mean, I get it can be grindey at times, but surely you don't expect to be handed everything, otherwise there's no challen...)
"GRIND!!! IT NEEDS TO BE EASIER TO GET WHAT I WANT!!!! FDEV AREN'T LISTENING!!!"
(Well, they are, they realize there's a problem and tried to...)
"FINE THEY'RE INCOMPETENT"
(I don't think that's really the be...)
"ALL MORONS. I TOLD ONE OF THEM IF HE DOESN'T FIX THE GAME I'LL BURN HIS HOUSE DOWN"
(Whoa, whoa, whoa, that's a bit much th...)
"OH, YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME?!?! I BET YOU WORK FOR THEM. KEEP IT UP AND I'LL BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN TOO."
(Ooop, my time in supercruise is down to 7 seconds, have to run)
