Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

I’m sure you have posted this before but are you able to supply a link to a reasonable PvP build? I appreciate that this is a bit of a how long is a piece of string request. Just something for me to get a look at. Start crafting. Then go cop killing in. I didn’t say that last bit.
What ship do you like?
Can you hit fast moving targets with rails or plasma?

Sure. Take your pick.

Thank you.

Whilst I’m rubbish (I suspect because I’ve never done it) at PvP, I’m pretty good at moving an FC back and forth to, IDK, Colonia, say.

I have no idea, any combat I’ve done has been in solo in a Python, lasers and MCs. This is where I’m at a loss. I’d like to build something adequate and learn to use it.

Take Ganks FdL, throw out the 5 PAs and add 5 gimballed multicannons, the huge with corrosive, all overcharged, three incendiary and one emissive and you're set to win :p

Now question is, how do I find the ganker, once I'm ready to face him...
Accept the friend request, or send them one after you get ganked.

As you probably know, having someone on your friend list is a good way to improve the chances of instancing with them. Putting them on your block list should make it nearly impossible to instance with them.

So if you ever want to have a go at taking revenge on someone who ganked you, definitely add them to your friends list. It will tell you where they are and in what mode they are playing, making it easy to find them, and it will increase your chance of instancing with them significantly. And I promise, gankers welcome the idea with open arms.... because it's fun and exciting.

Thank you.

We are all rubbish when we start in PVP. I am still rubbish, but I am seeing small progress. It can take weeks or months of dedicated, focused practice to "git gud," but it's a lot of fun in the process. The PVP community is on the balance really great, helpful and welcoming.

In a weird way, ganking serves a recruiting function.

Thinking about it a little more, over 3.5 years, I had 2 incidents at events I was on the org team for. None in the last 18 months or so. The team that did the other events probably had about the same, I wasn't at all of them.
The frequency of what you're describing isn't relevant. The fact that, as you have described it here, it represents actual IRL criminal behavior - with the purported justification for said lawlessness being "stuff that happened in a game."

I have no idea why you'd share that story if not to attempt to intimidate others with threats for their in-game behavior. This is much like the previous comments from others with ominous intonations about doxxing, or verbal confrontations at someone's home, and other real-life consequences that they "deserve" due to their in-game behavior. Which is insane.

Can you help us understand what your intent was, if not that?

Oh, and I think it's wildly amusing that most of you seem to have assumed I'm male.. rofl
Your gender expression is irrelevant to the illegality of the actions in the story you've shared here.

Just send them a wing invite & remind them to switch on their beacon :)

Hmm. I keep reading that. But i disbelieve.

And no, during my "let's see what happens" experiement with FDL, Imperial Courier and T6 i did not send out friends requests afterwards. I just tried to talk to them both before and after they attacked me. But the only communication i ever got was based on the fire button. Not a single word, neither before nor after attacking me. (Same at the times i accidentally ended up in open and somebody tried to destroy my Python or Krait MK II. All i got was incoming fire, no communication, neither before nor after the attack. )

In contrast, one of my Imperial Couriers i lost to somebody who i did some duelling with in SD a few days ago and who was actually on my friends list. But while he was in ganking mode, he also did not respond to communication any more. So at least my personal experience is completely different: even the most dumb NPC is capable of more communication that the gankers i ever experienced. Being involved in ganking seems to completely shut down any ability of verbal communication.

I’m sure that’s true, however, I feel I was radicalised by the fudging po-po.
I've said it before, the notion of having player groups of "cops and robbers" in this game is part of the fun of the endgame experience, at least for me.

So long as everyone keeps some grip on reality - that we are, in fact, participating in a roleplaying video game here, and that things that happen in-game aren't real life - I think it can make for tons of entertainment.

And the spaceship pew-pew really is unique. You have ships that are as agile as a dogfighter, but can tank damage like a naval vessel. It's very cool.

Well, if you want someone easy to practice against, I'm happy to be your huckleberry.

CMDR D'ANQUEMEME in game.

I have a couple combat ships, my Krait MkII with frags and a "meta FDL" with 5 PAs and 5 boosters. I'm pretty bad so you stand a really good chance.

Headed to the Rosette Nebula with Cow tonight aboard the FC Mother of all Ganks, you're welcome to join!

If you cant remember their name, if that is what you’re asking, go to the comms in your ship and tab across to history, it will have all the players you have met in there.
Thanks for the tip, I do remeber their names, they were CMDR "A" and CMDR "B"... (names slightly changed, not sure if its against any rules or etiquette to post names here)... So if you are reading this, Im coming for you... Send your wifes last kisses, you're not coming home for dinner...

It is indeed against the rules to name and shame.

Best of luck with your revenge quest.

One of them is the top scoring ganker in the game. Literally thousands of kills. Even if you did get the upper hand in a fight, the reality of Elite is that, once you have acquired a decent ship and a modicum of gank evasion skill, death becomes completely optional. Meaning either of these pilots would likely high wake on you if the fight turned against them.

Which, of course, means that you'd have won.

Oh, and yes: naming and shaming is against the rules, so you should probably edit that.

Thanks for the offer but no. I was into duelling many years ago. The game was new but more importantly, i still had way more time available. By now I grew out of it and play too casually. (Merely a late night tour every other weekend, and that's at times when my wife already is in bed and i am in not so great shape for PvP any more. )

My point rather is historic: the whole "and gankers are so social" line is around since the game was launched. But my experiences with gankers always, whenever i ran into them, intentionally or not, where just the opposite: boring people, who knew nothing else than the fire button.

Sure, some of them were good pilots, above any beyond my piloting capability. (At least some of those who actually dared to attack my Imperial Courier. Some of those who attacked my T6 were clearly already at the limit of their abilities just trying to get their crosshairs on a T6 while i was circling them and waiting for my low-wake through their masslock, as high-waking was against my plan. )

I can't tell how the present day quota is. But in old times, the forums also was like "gankers are all great and social people, just looking for a challenge", while my in-game experience was just the opposite: mostly weak pilots, looking for an easy target and lacking any ability to communicate. Most boring ever.

👆 what he said.

The second one on your list mopped the floor with me more than once 😁

Can I give a quick shout-out to our Community Manager, Stephen Benedetti?

He is the person who was featured alongside Mr. Braben in the now (in)famous clip about "making things go wrong for other people" being part of the Elite experience.

Anyways, he popped into the GCI Discord today as he's working on getting some content together for an upcoming retrospective, and I took the opportunity to pose the following question to him. He was an amazingly good sport and gave a fun answer!

Is Mr. Braben in fact an occasional ganker? Who knows! Maybe?!!

But the good spirit is the important signal, here. I think it's worth remembering, and it's what I try to carry with me into the game.

Crisp o7 to Mr. Benedetti for his contribution to our community!
