Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

There is more gameplay in that stuffed penguin than there is in the whole of Skyrim!
How many skyrims one can put into that penguin?

Bored Gamer has put out a video about CR's reappearance.
It's nice that there is "Includes Paid Promotion" banner.

Completely seriously - in the last ten years, I have released exactly as many games as Genuine Roberts.
Do you have any proof of that? :D

Meanwhile, I've ehard that of $121m that Cyberpunk costs only $35m were actually spent on development, all above that is on marketing.

Imagine what could Chris do with $35m and no publisher!!

The Agent has dropped a hint another rumour dump is coming on SA forums.

Now that would be interesting if true. Especially since CR (or CIG) now has a stake in Turbulent.

If Turbulent takes the lead then the immediate effect would be CIG laying off employees as Turbulent's manpower count increases. And it wouldn't be a one-one ratio, CIG would be losing several people for every one that the other company gains.

Even though CR/CIG has a stake in Turbulent it doesn't mean they call the shots in this situation. If they did, CIG wouldn't be abidicating the lead in the first place.

Let's see what happens next 🤔

Turbulent will not take the lead, they will create planets and systems for CIG.

What is the size of SC now with only one star system in the game , 60GB ? Once you have ten say, which is probably the minimum they are going for, what do you think it will be?

Whoa

If the script and spreadsheet are correct then there are only 510,038 backers, and of them 58,380 are concierge+ spending-level (10% of the total).

Ah, but the funds tracker is totally accurate and true tho.

With the sales of the 3 SQ42 chapters.

First chapter will have to be good and get good reviews to get lots of people buying in. A lot of people who bought into SC already have SQ42 chapter 1, and a lot of early backers have chapter 2.

And ok, that's a bump in funding, but what about after? How quickly can they then churn out chapters 2 and 3?

And how far away is Chapter 1 yet?

Your statement is based on about as much as The Agent's is though. Zero evidence for anything. Its speculation/rumour/gossip to say Turbulent will take the lead but equally, you can't say they won't. Who knows?

The Agent does claim to having connections in CIG (or a friend who used to work at CIG who is still in touch with people in CIG, if i get the right of it).

What is your source of insider information?

Are you perhaps a CIG employee? Do you know people inside CIG? Spill the beans!

Streaming assets like that is rare in game atm not because developpers don't know how to do it, but because every PC AAA game has also to run on PS4 and XBOX. Those consoles can't physically stream assets fast enough (their HDD is too slow).

That's complete nonsense. Console games have been streaming assets since before they even had hard drives, because they generally have a small amount of memory and can't afford to cache stuff that's no longer being used.

For example, here's an article on how Avalance Studios did it for Just Cause way back in 2006 for the PS2 and original Xbox: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/130186/streaming_for_next_generation_games.php

Thing is, game engines should be able to asynchronously stream assets, i.e the game doesn't pause when assets are being streamed in and if it can't keep up you can see the objects gradually take form in sight.

I don't know if Star Citizen pauses when loading assets or not, it certainly shouldn't.

He's posted twice on the forum in 2020 and made no other visible contribution this year

Making a rough guess at Chirs' "c-suite exec" takings based on Erin's I reckon that's at least $150k per post

There's no way his ego would stand for him not paying himself substantially more than Erin, especially when he doesn't have to report it publicly like Erin does. Shockingly, one of the more obsequious fans on Spectrum suggested he should double his workload to FOUR posts a year! The nerve!

Small investments in time even once a quarter by you and the other key leaders that the older community loves and misses like Brian Chambers, Erin Roberts, and some others would pay tremendous dividends in goodwill, better press, and increased funding.

I remember it being the big feature of Soul Reaver in 1999, it was how they overcame the limitations of CD access speeds, by breaking the game world into chunks, and constantly loading and unloading them around you in order to have no loading screens. The game would stream the data for the next blocks in each direction as you ran about its world.

Yes. If SQ42 chapter 1 is a flop, SC is doomed.

The Agent have a friend who know a friend who is working somewhere at CIG :)
And this friend of friend haven't been able to reveal some basic info like that CR was at least still coding at the company when everyone was wondering where he'd gone ?
This is less sexy news than the announcement that CR had been taken by the CIA for trafficking with the Italian mafia or had flown away in the Fiji Islands...

For the last time, streaming assets is nothing new. But streaming huge assets on the fly and for something 2 seconds away is new thanks to the SSD. And it change the way you can code your asset's flow in a game and consequently the way levels/maps are created.
Read the part about limitation (quality, time access and sustained data rate) of streaming assets in your article. You have to adjust the asset's flow to the capabilities of the hardware. For the actual gen of console and for all games released, the adjustment is made for HDD disk only (SSD is just a plus, not mandatory for the game to work correctly). For SC and the new gen console, the adjustment is made for SSD only. So you can manage your assets 100X faster than a standard 7200RPM hard drive. If you don't see why it can change completely the way you can manage assets in a game I can nothing for you. It's a Game-changer as was the 3DFX at the time. Just read how coders talk about the possibilities of the new PS5 or the new XBOX.
You can decide for instance to load the high quality asset of a billboard in a street only when the character is at less than 10 m of it where before SSD you had to load every high assets of the street as soon as you enter it.
And you know what ? That's exactly what SC do now when you approach billboards, approach a new ship, open some closets, etc.

By deciding not to sell on console, and therefore not to be limited by their technical capacity, and coding SC with SSD in mind, they can fit at ease huge quality assets in a game with no loading screen where all others games as to rely on tricks in the construction of the levels/map to hide the loading times.

We have no proof CR is coding anything or that he is still in charge (or that he isn't in charge for that matter).

Do you have a friend with a friend with a friend who has told you CR has been so busy coding that as the CEO of the company he simply hasn't had the time to congratulate backers on reaching 300 million, or talking about the roadmap to the roadmap, or giving information about SQ42's release.

Wow, he must have been really busy coding to not even attend to his CEO duties. Some might even suggest that would be a dereliction of duties.

Except CIG are NOT using this tech the way everyone else is, namely efficiently. They are brute forcing something which everyone else is using to allow for greater optimisation and finesse in loading. Once again I direct you to Microsoft's Sampler Feedback Streaming, designed to optimise texture loading by NOT loading huge textures, but instead increasing how much can potentially be rendered at once, by means of using that access speed to only need to load the specific chunks of textures which are visible onscreen in that frame.

And you know that because of? Just asking.
