Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The great thing about following SC is that it's not just about game development. We're also treated to roadmap development, pipeline development, tool development, jpeg development and cash development. It's interesting that the only one on that list proceeding quite nicely is due to the actions of backers, not CIG. 😬

And the various mental states of human psyche and how they affect behavior as well as allow scams to continue despite better common sense. I personally find Star Citizen immensly fascinating as well as frustrating (because believe it or not...I would LOVE to play a game like Star Citizen but the current version simply is a far cry of what was promised, sold, and is expected based on those promises). I simply dont waste my time with buggy raw alphas or tech demos anymore. Waiting for Star Citizen to become a reality or fail has become a bittersweet hobby of mine which I dread and enjoy in equal parts ^^

A good and sincere prediction.
Can I have one for the future of SQ42 ? It will fail quicker ?

As long as CIG are functioning then it can't fail unless they dump it or release it.

If they release it, it could be good, you never know, or it could be really really lame. I'm talking Wing Commander the movie lame. Time will tell.

A roadmap update! This is so exciting!

Only CIG can make the delivery of a roadmap look like a task of herculean proportions.

It may seem like a simple task, but an oft-overlooked aspect of building out this Roadmap is the management of such a massive dataset.

And... its not even going to be a full roadmap at the start

So, what can you expect this December? We plan on delivering a Roadmap that focuses on our core features from our “upstream” teams initially.

So in other words, it will still suffer limitations like the current roadmap.

the nature of development is obviously that downstream teams have to be reactive to some degree to what upstream teams are working on, which can make it very difficult to accurately map out long-term work

Its really really hard doing a roadmap you know. Really really hard.

Oh, and they are still dancing around release

Progress and Priorities, Not Promises

Yeah, because we know how much CIG don't like making promises

This is a large undertaking for us, and quite frankly, kind of scary

Jeebus wept. Its a roadmap, not a cure for cancer!

At the end of the day, i don't think most people care about all this fancy visualization. All they want are some realistic dates for 1) when SQ42 will release and 2) when SC will release.

By now, they should be able to say the former, unless it is still years away. The latter, well yeah, we know they are nowhere near getting SC into a releasable state, so better string backers along by not saying anything about it.

It's a bit early for new year's predictions, but I'll take a punt.
CIG will eventually dribble out some sort of "prelude" episode, a term which will be used in the same way as "alpha" to give the impression that something has been delivered while at the same time excusing its countless broken or absent mechanics and bugs and overall hilariously low quality. It will consist of some classic (read cringe-worthy) Roberts cutscenes, and disappointing visuals which may have scraped by as barely mediocre 5 years ago. Interactive sections will mostly consist of exploring some lifeless environments in between arena commander-style combat set pieces, because that's all CIG is currently able to produce after 9 years of development. It will be presented as "epic" and a "teaser" when what they'll really mean is "we haven't figured out AI or FPS mechanics yet". It will be about 30 minutes of cutscenes and 15 minutes of game play.
Fans will lap it up, claiming it hints at amazing things to come in future episodes. They will bemoan media outlets who dare to criticise it as not understanding that it's just a "prelude" and argue that they shouldn't judge it as a finished game. I would guess we'll see it in 12-18 months, which I'm basing entirely on the time it ought to take them to build something as described starting from now (which is about 4x longer than it would take anyone else).

“Progress and Priorities, Not Promises” bit.
I have a strange feeling of déjà vu...

Oh yes:

This would be like the 5th or possibly 6th iteration of the roadmap? What confidence is there that this time around it is going to stick?

By the sounds of it CIG is trying to make it even more complex and loaded if possible including info such as headcount and expertise levels... At the same time they claim this roadmap is going to be more "sustainable". Those two are usually very much incompatible. If you want things stable for longer the basic principle is to make them as simple and lean and as low maintenance as possible.

Additionally the fact CIG has just caveated this roadmap with a "it can change without notice and nothing is promised" it renders the whole exercise futile and worthless. In fact CIG can just show any items they want with that roadmap in order to raise hype and get to funding targets whenever needed only to later remove or delay those items while being completely free of any accountability, but keeping the money.

Imo the only goal with all these "roadmaps" is not to be accurate or relevant with the info about where the development is, that has never really been the case, but to maintain backers hype and pledge spending.

I mean, it makes sense: the backers have demonstrated a complete lack of historical awareness, so why wouldn't CI¬G try to push the envelope and see exactly how short that memory horizon is? Imaging how often they could recycle the same empty buzzwords if they got the window down to just a few weeks or a month!

Of course not, it's just a tool to suggest a big project with progress is going on while there actually is nothing to show.

It could simply be that they're an ambitious company that has wiggled themselves into a gap. And that the tax breaks don't hurt.

TheAgent's leak juice suggests there may be a Calders angle to it all though:

Generally foreshadowed by stuff like this. (Turbulent in bold, but the discussion of missed internal deadlines & presentations an interesting backdrop too):

Thanks for this digest post, most helpful. I foresee that if it folds, and disney declines... will SC become an Amazon game? (Or am I not allowed to post that?)

Amazon seem to be backing away from their Lumberyard adventure, so probably not.

They are probably the closest thing to a Freelancer-era Microsoft though, with their attempt to brute-force their way into gaming, so never know ;)
