ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Question about this... it says to move the green lines as far to the side as possible, so all you see is a slither of green. Does that mean moving it as far as possible to the left or right with you following it with your eyeballs? Or do you look straight ahead when doing this?

Follow it, also have done it to a very thin sliver ie crescent, didn't make much difference to the IPD value.

Hi Hadron42,

That would explain why in Elite under Graphics / 3D you can only choose Anaglyph & Side by Side :(

Sorry with the flurry of posts I've lost track a bit ..... on your PC :
- in direct mode does the Oculus Config Utility see the rift now?
- in extended desktop mode does Oculus Config Utility initially see the rift and then stop working (or not at all)?

Cheers
M

I'm a total noob mate. I can't even get my rift focussed. It looks easier to get laser eye surgery done than adjust the "EVERYBODIES EYES MUST BE EITHER A OR B CUP COMPATABLE" lenses. why in gods name they didn't just have a focus on the side of each lens I don't know.

The frames of my glasses are too wide for the rift, so even the b cups aren't comfortable for me - so I use daily disposable contacts. They are much cheaper and easier to sorry out than laser surgery.

I am considering laser surgery though.

I know people are having issues with framerate with the Rift and Elite, I thought I'd just post this, from the Oculus Best Practices Doc.

The Oculus Quality slider in Elite, is the eye-render buffer resolution adjustment.

Rendering resolution
The DK2 Rift has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080, but the distortion of the lenses means the
rendered image on the screen must be transformed to appear normal to the viewer. In order to
provide adequate pixel density for the transformation, each eye requires a rendered image that
is actually larger than the resolution of its half of the display. The render target size is 2364 x 1461
Such large render targets can be a performance problem for some graphics cards, and
dropping framerate produces a poor VR experience. Dropping display resolution has little
effect, and can introduce visual artifacts. Dropping the resolution of the eye buffers, however,
can improve performance while maintaining perceived visual quality.
This process is covered in more detail in the SDK.

Hope this explains why, the demand on hardware is high.

TL/DR, You're actually rendering at 2364x1461 So you machine is needing to render two cameras/views that are 1182x1461.

That's ok then that's what people call the SDK.

oculus_runtime_rev_1_sdk_0.4.2_win

No they don't. The SDK is what it is, the software development kit. It is needed to implement Rift functionality in your own projects aside from Unity/UE based ones (there are other specific Rift integration packages for these).

However, what you need to get your DK 2 working is the Oculus Runtime. It contains the necessary drivers for the head-tracker and IR camera as well as the Oculus Service and Config Utility.

oops... (s)he is right... I dropped the ball on that genius piece of advice early on.

sorry about that.

I've got it all working nicely now, using a gtx770 and all details down to minimum so no judder and it all runs really smoothly. However I notice that people say I should set display as primary monitor. In the elite configure screen I have it set as secondary. If I select primary I can only set refresh rate as 60, but if I select secondary monitor I can set it at 75. Should I do anything else here?

OK I spoke too soon. Flew out of a station to another and suddenly everything is juddery. I am not sure what settings to look at now - NVIDIA control panel, desktop screen window, or Elite. My brain starts to spin going through this thread!

Try unplugging and replugging the USB cable and HDMI cable that are in the front panel of the DK2. Might be that they are loose. You are plugging it into your GPU and not the iGPU on your Mobo? Seen someone do that the other day

Hey guys, just thought I would add my thoughts of Elite and the DK2.

Tonight I have played for around 4 hours straight and by far, this is the most amazing thing I have ever played in my life. I keep coming back to ED every month \ few weeks just to see how things are progressing but usually don't play very long.

DK2 arrived last Friday, I also have the DK1 and started playing at premium beta. What I have seen this evening, just blows everything away that I've seen before and any expectations i had. I felt the experience in DK1 was pretty good but it didn't deliver those kind of feelings I was getting tonight, dog fight adrenaline, planet scenery making hairs stand up on your neck, jaw dropping stuff, (or most likely oculus mouth wide open stuff)..

I haven't had any issues really other than some tiny FPS drops in a couple of stations, im running an OC i5-4670K & GTX770 @ 2560 x 1440 (I setup a custom res for the DK2 in NVIDIA Control). It looks superb, best to turn settings down a bit \ shadows etc.

After a couple of missions I found myself in the beautiful system of Acturias? Watched the sunrise over an earth like planet in high orbit and got into some awesome fights with NPC pirates.

Completely blown away.. This is truly next gen stuff.
Thank you David, Thank you FD Team oh and thankyou Oculus!!!!

1:49am - I should have gone to bed a hours ago! Anyway just though i would leave some feedback

- mumrah are you able to post your NVIDIA Control settings? :D

How about you leave the OR mode on and change the display to secondary, is the issue still there if you display it on flat screen? if yes then you can record it using Shadowplay.

Genius mate. Worked a treat!! Simply set the output of the "Oculus" to display 1 (my monitor) and shadowplay worked just fine.

What bug do you want to report? Maybe there's already some video?

I raised the fact that since B2, you can't lean towards the menus much without them disappearing. And whilst I was at it, I recorded another bug I've got open (the orange spinning ship vanishing very quickly if you have a Rift).

Follow it, also have done it to a very thin sliver ie crescent, didn't make much difference to the IPD value.

I always wondered this with the Oculus IPD test. Are you supposed to go until you can only see a tiny bit of green on the screen, or should you stop when you can see the whole line start to go off-screen?

truth is, i do not think it matters, as you are only talking about a mm either way.

My IPD is hugely different to my wifes for instance (I have a massive head!) and yet even though our ipds are completely different, I do not really notice unless i am looking for it, if I am accidentally using my wifes profile.
the
so, ultimately DO set up your ipd etc etc, but dont sweat the tiny little things imo. (basically I am saying I dont know so i sort of split the difference)

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2cnas5/supersampling_the_dk2_2560x1440_in_elite_dangerous/

I'm using the standard default settings in the nvidia 3d settings. I came across this reddit. Didn't think that my rig could handle it based on the comments, however, didn't see any noticable slowdown once i tried it. Things definitely look sharper.

I've tried it, quite easy to do with the 900 nvidia cards as they have DSR. Does look a bit better but it does cause additional judder. I'm currently playing at 1080p with everything on Low as it seems the only way to play currently with next to no judder in stations and rings. I might be hypersensitive to judder though (but I do look for it).

I supersample E: D when I play on my monitor too, it's a 1440p monitor but I play the game at 4K and downscale. Looks awesome.

Had a try of running the DK2 at 4K in Grid Autosport. I did notice a significant difference in being able to make out distant objects (like some balloons floating off in the distance were much much clearer at 4K than 1080p or 1440p). Hopefully one day I'll be able to run E: D at 4K on the DK2 :)
If VR SLI turns out to be good and is supported I may get another 980 (might get one anyway to go with the 4K monitor I plan to buy ;) )

I'm now up and running with my DK2 however i'm really interested to see how people navigate? I cant use the system map and really struggle to use the galaxy map? Any top tips?

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, with trading nerfed, I've not looked at the maps. Go to station, pickup missions in neighbouring systems or head to local NAV beacons and collect bounties. That's where the moneys at.

Maps? we don't need no steenking maps! :D

New forum design for the 23rd of October. Is this a good time to bump the idea of a VR specific sub forum?

The sheer number of views and replies justifies it, IMHO. Some really smart people here posting very useful info but people can't find it after it goes a page back.

Thanks for posting this. I love reading this sort of stuff about the rift.
I would love to experience it, even for a few minutes.

If anyone is in Oxford with a DK2.......
