Thanks for all the new suggestions everyone, all now dumped in the OP. I need to start creating a table next with these places all sorted on distance from Sol so I can start putting a route together. Keep the suggestions coming tho' (in particular if anyone knows any specific systems heading out this way where I can find cool stellar phenomena - peduncle trees? space lightning? void hearts?).

Oh goodness, I hope I'm not too late, I just saw your episode of Flight Assist ...
Nope, still plenty of time! I actually might have to delay the trip a little longer as there's this new SRV Mastery Championship coming in December that I may have to get involved with.

Would a ringed ELW excite you?
Theoretically yes but I now have "Fields of Elysium" on the list which I believe gives me a binary pair of them.

This sounds like a solid case to get yourself an 'alt' free from Epic this week, Alec ;)
I suppose that would be a solution wouldn't it. I'm not normally keen on the idea of an Alt account (just feels kinda wrong 'cos with Cmdr Alec Turner it's me sitting in the cockpit) but perhaps I can stretch my immersion just a tad to sponsor an SRV racer back in the bubble while I head off to Colonia. Interesting.

I have more than 1 account (although I do favour one) and my own 'lore' makes them business partners... Perhaps your alt (if you choose to go there!) could be a progeny you have raised over the years? (in own lore, of course)

When I first saw this thread I figured you'd be giving the Scarab Championships a miss so you could enjoy the journey before Odyssey, and feet, arrive and you start playing with jetpacks.
The SMC aren't going to be finished till Feb and Odyssey won't be far behind (assuming it's not delayed).

Edit: an alt would be a way around that

UPDATE: 07.12.3306

I spent the morning outfitting a brand new Krait Mk II for the trip.

Reasons for choosing the Krait:
1) I've spent far too much time in the cockpit of DBX's and Asp's so I wanted to pick something new for the trip
2) I like the Krait cockpit
3) I wanted a ship that supports multi-crew (for visitors)
4) I still wanted decent jump range
5) I don't enjoy the Anaconda
6) I wanted a ship that can look good in a screenshot
7) I picked the Mk II over the Phantom so I can take a SLF (for extra photo opportunities and hooning)

I spent about 20mins installing internals (Shields, Guardian FSD booster, SLF, 2xSRVs, DSS, Heat Sinks, AFMU) ... Have I forgotten anything?
YES! Godammit - I genuinely forgot to install a Fuel Scoop. :ROFLMAO:
... and about an hour and a half on cosmetics (paintjob, SLF type, SLF paintjob, SRV paintjob, decals, name plates, engine colours and cockpit lights).

I just need to settle on a name and the bobbleheads that will accompany me in both main ship and SLF and then I'll do a test trip or two to make sure I can live with my choices (both cosmetic and outfitting). Perhaps I'll go and hunt down a few more Ammonia worlds in it tomorrow, that'll stretch it's legs a bit.

@Alec Turner :- My exploration Krait II that took me out to the Abyssal Plains & back (but with an added FSD booster that didn't exist at the time of the original trip!)

Krait Explorer

As a suggestion to check against, not that you need the stuff I took along!
That's a lot of firepower (and defence) for an exploration trip!

Here's my current build ..

I make no apologies for the fact that it's a bit cobbled together. I had some stuff in stored modules which I decided to re-purpose.

Oh ... note to self ... fit some firework lauchers remote release flak launchers.

The firepower & shields were because I didn't know what to expect - were never needed on the original trip, but did take care of a few NPC pirates later in the game :)

Only suggestion I'd make about your ship above would be to replace the Guardian PP with a 5A with G1 Low emissions +LW (it'll run cooler) and swap the 7D Distro for a 5A engineered for Charge enhanced +LW... Otherwise it looks like a nice ship to trot around in :)

I'm on my way to Colonia too. Took a small detour over Lyra's song so still 35k-ish lys to go before I arrive. Though I'm playing soylo we might arrive at roughly the same time.

Detour reason: I got the explorarion vibes again and I want to wait out the nerf hammering on everything I'm enjoying to do in the Bubble. The plan is to return there in januari or februari. If at all. Frankly I'm hoping FDEV will reward the pewpewers with 1 million credits per hit and 4 billion per kill so they stop whining about nerfing other activities. Personally I dislike combat: finding that "tag you're it" extremely boring.

A 3A engine focussed PD will get your range above 60 LY
With a single jump left in the tank - not with a full one - but can get a couple LY extra with a full tank. (and 50% slower boost recharge)
ETA: A few other 'cuts' can get it almost at 60Ly with a full tank (with the same size tank) but as the gain is only going to be minimal, even with NS Boost, it is hardly worth bothering unless in a particular hurry :)

I wanted to get above 50ly (so very happy with my build) but otherwise not in a massive hurry. I guess I'll have to see what the Flak launcher(s) does to that.
When optimising racing ships for range I often halve the size of the fuel tanks but for a long(ish) range exploration journey I think I'll avoid that (much as I've loved my recent return to the Fuel Rats I don't really want to have to call on them out in the black).

@Alec Turner , as previously mooted, I can send an FC after you for some bits (meaning, I'd like to come and see some things and will drag my FC with me). So, if you wanted to chuck a ship on that in case you wanted to swap out for a change, I can bring it along. No promises on where/when, though. :D

But I also understand that one part of exploring is that you are stuck with what you head out with. The offer is there if you want it.

I do love the idea of those long journeys to the outer reaches of the galaxy. Kudos to those that stick it out, especially the ones who circumnavigated the galactic edge without FSD boosters and engineering.

As an aside, even though Iove exploring, it's when I hit the 15,000LY mark (or hear about an ED update like Odyssey) that I start to regret it and head back. Now that I have two other alts though, I may just use one solely for exploration. As you said OP, it's about the journey, not the destination. :)

Indeed it is!
The Krait (minus the 'new' bits) I used to go out to the Abyssal Plains (via Sag A*) was 40+ LY jump range - I arrived in Colonia (on the way back) just as 3.3 happened so took nearly as long doing those 22KLy back to the bubble as I did getting all the way out and back to Colonia... We could find things with the FSS / DSS that I'd never found before... That was an amazing journey back!
