ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey HUD Breakdown

Problem is I use one of THESE, and the game doesn't seem to agree with using that and either Keyboard/Mouse or Gamepad SIMULTANIOUSLY. (I'd use Key and Mouse for First person shooter mode, honestly)

Want to get your hands on Elite Dangerous: Odyssey as soon as it's available? Pre-order now on PC here

Can you please inform us until what date we can pre-order Odyssey? Will we be able to buy it until the end of the year ? I am buying the Deluxe version

What I would like to know before I pre-order the deluxe edition is whether the progression I would make before odyssey is released will remain in the base game after the alpha and beta are over ?
Or would I lose all the progress made during beta alpha?
o7 cmdr, that is EXCELENT question... Devs? :)

All previous Alphas/Betas have been of the "What happens in Alpha/Beta, stays in Alpha/Beta" variety (progress is wiped). I believe there are a couple of reasons
  • Frontier seem to have an anti-Pay-to-win stance, and by since you pay extra for access to these, then the progress gained would be an advantage over those that didn't pay.
  • These Alpha/Betas are to find out how things work and then include revisions and balance to them. They might not reflect how things end up in the final release. e.g. If I went in and progressed to "Foot Soldier Elite" in 2 days because of a bug, then FDev change it so that it takes you months to reach the same level, would that be fair?

That's why I like this game, no premiums, no OP ships for cash, no extra progress for cash, as fair as it can be in todays standards of MMOs.

If that would be the case then great, instead of focusing on progressing, we can freely test and break anything and everything with no consequence to main progression. Me gusta :)

It hasn't convinced me to preorder either. Just because we haven't seen the actual gameplay of the scanning, doesn't mean it's not in there. I am positive it will be in along with the rest of the stuff they have shown and told us.

But I am not just talking about scanning vegetation, there will also be many different missions that may not need the use of guns, if you actually listen to the Dev diaries, that's is pretty obvious.

I agree with you but I'm just very cautious about my expectations regarding the number of different activities in Odyssey.
Fdev tends to exaggerate when releasing new stuf, like they did with the number of activities you can have with Thargoids.

I have only 1 question:

The combat. PVE or PVP?
I think both, devs where talking about players making alliances and waging wars against each other so PVP there, as per PVE the screenshots shared by devs show that the enemy of the player has some random name WITHOUT cmdr prefix, same as currently NPCs do. But I might be wrong.

I use 2 sticks, throttle, driving wheel, rudder pedals, gameglass and mouse together....

Huh? Why not? You can combine as many controllers as you want.

Not on consoles you can’t.

As it currently stands, ED on Xbox doesn't recognise two pads plugged in at the same time, only the one you first sign into the game with will actively control anything in game (except for text boxes such as the search bar in the GalMap or naming your ship).

The Xbox One Co-Pilot (dual controller) option doesn't work with the Hotas-One as it doesn't seem to recognise it as a separate Co-Pilot compatible controller.
The Hotas seems to react like extra buttons on the Xbox pad when I look at the pad calibration screen.

You can start up the game and fly/drive around using a Hotas then unplug it and plug in a control pad when the game prompts you to plug your controller back in.
But it automatically switches to "Default" button settings once it picks up the Xbox pad, so if like me you use a lot of custom button binds you then have to go to the controller settings menu and change them to custom settings manually.
The same happens in reverse if you then swap back to your Hotas, you have to go back into controller settings and select your custom key binds again.

So basically, consoles CAN easily accommodate multiple controllers.
But the console version of Elite Dangerous currently CAN NOT.

This is my only real concern with anything relating to Odyssey.
I don’t want to be swapping pads & opening the control options every time I get in or out of my ship or SRV.

It would be very nice if FDev could clarify if they’re aware of this issue?

Suddenly I understand a bit more about the possible motivation behind "hey guys isn't it cool we made it so you can play Odyssey and get from place to place without EVER getting into a boring old spaceship!"

Possibly it's to allow people to play for larger discrete blocks of time without having to switch between input devices?

Really? Don't you ever get tired of yourself? :cautious:

The nerd in me loves that it's showing the actual temperature, and not just a temperature percentage. I'd love to see them add the same to the ship & SRV HUDs. It'd be great being on one of those planets almost inside star's exclusion zone, and being able to see the temperature outside being X hundreds/thousands of degrees.

I wonder if there'll actually be temperature (and gravity) hazards? Some planets are so inhospitable they can only be explored for limited periods of time.

The radar worries me.
Showing enemy locations will remove any stealth in the FPS combat gameplay.
I understand we would have the tech to do that. However we would also have the tech to counter/jam it and so would the enemy.

From past experience, for game play purposes, showing only same team and objectives is better.
The same should apply to the Floating Name tag, it should only show over same team.
Nothing worse than using the radar to find someone or finding them because the name tag pops up. Or being the person found because of radar or name tag popup.

Great info and great news FDev.

Octodad? Is that you?! :)
Haha sometime I be like 'hmm which one was a hit sink? This one? Ow crap ABORT ABORT ABORT.... ahh shiiiiiii'

Seriously though, mouse for gal/sys map, wheel'n'pedals for srv + left hand stick for turret, hotas for ship flight controls, gameglass for non-combat systems like scanners, mode changing.... sure I could assign all on hotas alone but thats a bit less immersive. 4 me anyway 👍🤪🤪🤪

I’m as hyped as anyone for Odyssey and really want to pre order it. My temporary issue is that I’m running a toaster with terrible bandwidth and could be 2-3 months before finances and a house move allow upgrades.

The technical issues on the frontier store along with potential launcher issues means I’m holding back on pre ordering.

Has a minimum spec been released?

My toaster has a 1st gen i7 at 3400( clocked) a 1660 6gb TI and 8gb DDR 3 ram

It runs horizons just fine , even in VR with mostly low settings

The trailers of the gameplay look awesome and hope this dlc brings in a new era for elite dangerous for the future of frontier developments and its player base.

Did you implement a way to switch between monitor and VR when going fps? So that you can continue playing on the monitor and then back to VR when on the ship? I ask this because at the moment you need to restart the game to switch back to the monitor.
No you don't - I do this all the time when I play, without ever needing to restart the game. Despite being able to fly for hours on end, the SRV, within a few minutes, causes VR sickness, so I always drive it in flat-screen. All you need to do is:

Go into OPTIONS/GRAPHICS and change "3D" to OFF and then into DISPLAY and select full-screen/resolution. You're now in non-VR full-screen mode.
Reversing this is even easier: Just go back into "3D" and select "HMD". You're now back in VR mode.

Admittedly, this is a manual process and a key-binding would be greatly appreciated to simplify the process.
