EDO (Elite Dangerous Odyssey) doesn't exist yet. Carefully scripted scenes, are not gameplay. So at a minimum I will wait for real gameplay and reviews before I even think of purchasing EDO.
Also why reward bad behavior, such as, bugs, and Qol issues, as brought up by Old Duck above.
Agree Thistle, Fdev started to balance recently, hopefully they are not done, as some things are in a good spot while other income streams are not in a good spot.
Walking in cockpit - three years to produce a fully fleshed out on-legs paid DLC and they didn't even bother adding in at least the cockpit (door opens to lift) to explore, makes me wonder what else they half <redacted>ed in what really should be a complete game overhaul.
Probably still buy it on release but I never pre-order. I get doing it when you had to buy games from stores to ensure they save a copy for you, but digitally? not even if they offer a Cobra Mk 4. All-in-one-limpet controller, then maybe...
We've been shown a bunch of commercials for it. Like trailers for a movie, where people sit down and decide what is the best way to get someone interested in the product.
But what do we actually know about minute to minute gameplay? Very, Very little.
I want to see an actual representation of the gameplay. I'm tired of these "Watching someone spend 10s doing something cut up to another 10s of doing something."
How atmospherics will affect ship flight. It better not be a 1:1 with the current planets we have now, except with a prettier skybox. That would just be immersion breaking.
Sure, we're only getting "tenuous" atmos., but we even have to deal with re-entry heating on planets like Mars, so...
There is no benefit to pre-ordering at all, unless you want to help Frontier find their own bugs for them, and I'm sure we'll all get plenty of opportunity to do that in the final release...
From what we've seen so far, I'm finding it hard to get excited by the expansion at all. I'm not remotely interested in FPS game play and there doesn't really seem to be much else in the expansion beyond that.
The exploration game play is almost certainly going to be a disappointment. Become Elite by pointing a gun shaped sensor at a variety of plants that are so interesting and diverse Frontier haven't shown us a single in game example, only a bit of concept art. Am I the only one worried about this?
Searching derelict space ships via EVA would have been fun, but if that was coming, I suspect they'd have told us by now. So the scavenger activity will probably be pretty similar to the current planetary scavenging, just we can do it on foot and not only in an SRV.
The biggest disincentive for me is the lack of VR. As far as I'm concerned, flat screen space legs will be inferior to VR in an SRV when it comes to exploring planets. Especially when used in conjuction with the free camera.
No, the only real selling point for me is the new planetary tech and I'm happy to wait until release and then decide if that makes it worth the asking price.
I haven't really been paying attention to the hype for Odasea so the "things I want to see" might already have been shown, but still...
What I really want to see is NPCs doing stuff.
Not just pew-pew but environments populated by NPCs doing day-to-day stuff.
For me, the environments need to seem "real" rather than just being "stages" for us to act out space-counterstrike deathmatches.
I want to see offices with people sat in them, working on computers, getting up, walking across to workshops, monkeying around with stuff and then going back to their offices.
I want to see shops with NPCs stood at the counters, going into the back, moving boxes around and then going back to the counter.
I want to see NPCs buying tickets and then queuing up to board ships or trains.
I want to see environments that look "alive".
First off, preorder is out of the question. On principle alone it's a bad idea, these are not physical goods. But doubly so in this case, in light of FDev's delivery of half implemented and then largely ignored features over the last 18 months or so.* Why should I pay extra to alpha test, when it's likely the released product will be of beta quality?**
So I'll buy Odyssey once it is released, stable, proves to have delivered on its promises, and is worth the price they're asking for it. Things this may include are:
I'd like to see some actual new gameplay loops, not just reskins of stuff we already do but "on foot".
I'd like to see stuff that isn't just running around shooting at things.
I'd like to see something for the existing game if, as they said, we 'want to continue with our ships'. So far the intent there appears to be, "Give us money for Odyssey just because we released it, even though we've added nothing for you specifically."
We're being told we can do things other than combat, and there will be things for us if we don't care about FPS play - but we've been shown nothing. Not even a hint of it. A couple of images of concept art don't count. We still haven't seen any legitimate gameplay footage, and concrete information is even harder to come by.
In short, I'm not in the habit of buying promises - especially when there's a history of overpromising and under delivering. Give me a product that substantially does what it claims (this includes not having niggling bugs), and offers something I'm interested in at a reasonable value. Do that and I'll happily buy it. But not before.
Even the preorder was botched, as it bricked a bunch of launchers. How can you not test that beforehand?
Come on, FDev, what is your process? Do you even have a process? Yes, that's harsh, but it's a fair question at this point. If you do, it is severely broken, as these things are not 'one offs' or isolated incidents at this point. They've become expected. That's not a place you should ever find yourself with your products.
In fairness to FDev, this is a current problem with the industry as a whole, and they're certainly not the worst offenders. But it's still the case, and I'm certainly not going to reward it by opening my wallet before the product is what it should be.
It's all about gravity & inertia for me. We must know by now the gameplay is going to be repetitive. what keeps the SRV fresh is every planet is a different feel & therefore, experience. If the feel & effect of gravity produces a different META approach to scenarios dependent on gravity (& terrain) then we're golden. show us what happens to running & landing on .1g compared to 2g. How u can somersault over someone & spray their head with bullets on lowG and are better off crouching and plinking on hiG.
That kindve thing that shows how the Sim feeds into the gameplay to produce a significantly different end result for the player. pls.
I think what we've seen looks great so far, although there are a whole load of things that will be extremely hard to get right (NPC AI is the bit I worry about most).
Personally, I'd be more interested in them adding base building than ship interiors, but I hope both of these things come in the future. And it feels like they'd be all set to do atmospheric worlds now (probably as the next expansion they build up to over the next couple of years).
