ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey PC Launch Date

The kid in me is THRILLED and EXCITED for May 19th. I'm one of the ones who have enjoyed Alpha, and know that actual release will run smoother in most cases and will be better than what we're seeing now. That's how it usually works, with data-collection and all.

But the adult in me is worried that the 19th might be a bit too soon. Sure, I imagine FDEV folks working round the clock from now until May 19th, and of course we all know that come the 19th, there will be a string of fixes long after that date, and Frontier is a business, but are a few weeks really enough time?

There's gonna be haters no matter what you do - haters gonna hate and whine no matter how good/bad the result is, so wouldn't it be best to take a few more weeks (or whatever time you need) to get the product more polished?

Given FD's long history of these things, I'm expecting to see Odyssey release in much the same state as it is now... as minimum viable product.

Then some hotfixes, so people can actually play it. Eventually (in about a month) there might be a larger bugfix patch. Maybe two if we are very lucky.

Then either abandoned (depending on how much money Odyssey makes) or they'll move onto the next shiny thing, completely separate from the rest of the game, and leave everything else just hanging there indefinitely.

Just going by past form. That's what I'm expecting. 🤷‍♀️

So, will it still work in VR? I know about the pancake rendering and all that, but will I still be able to sit in my spaceship looking at the galaxy outside? Can I drive my SRV in VR on those new atmospheric planets?

If I keep Horizons and skip Odyssey, will the game be like it has always been, or will the shadows be crunched like in the alpha?

So you have not played Alpha then? or you would know that you can't personally fly the Apex LOL! Where's my 25K, i have a car waiting for you here. Look out for the Apex, errrrr around September i think ;)

I know that I can't fly the Apex... but it does have a pilot...

Keep smiling too, laughter is allegedly the best medicine, and I've had a good tablespoon of medicine today (y)

This is quite some confidence - phase 4 didn't even start and we got a release date.

Hopefully this is enough time to work on the thousands of issue tracker reported issues...

I tend to agree with you there, but I'm trying to put aside my notion of premonition.
There's always a history or pattern, but it's not constructive in discussions as it doesn't contribute to resolution.
It's to forego an event with a conclusion(?)(sorry, English is not my native language).

What gets us moving forward is being concrete & specific about things that need fixing.
It may seem boring, but the passion (we all have) should be used at creative ideas on how to improve it instead of dwelling on how bad it broke our game.
It is this simple really (for me that is). o7

Yeah me too, Like i said earlier, i have placed an order already for Popcorn and some high Sugar content drink for the 19th, gonna be fun on here. We'll start with the countless post on 'I can't download', My Download is stuck' or Steam is not working. Then we'll progress to the 'I got this Purple Python' or 'Black Cobra', then The servers will crash and so on and son on. We have both seen it before many many times since 1.3 when i bought into this great game.

Yep Mr Catcher, Stay Safe and Keep Smiling, there is not much else to do, or i could go scan some plants in my Garden and try join 3 circles ;) :)

I have had fun during the alpha, so reckon I could have found worst ways to spend a tenner over 3 weeks or so.

But, my buzzing friend, I will assume our exchange passed in the ligh-hearted way I'd intended and that there is no ill-will either way ;) I did truly chuckle in our exchange - you're good!

But mention that spinny thing once more, then things could get nasty! :ROFLMAO:

It isn't the drive assist (I only switch that on when I forget where the handbrake button is and want to stop...) I was enjoying trying out the new handling on different bodies, but I appreciate the sentiment (y)

Mr Catcher, your posts on this forum are always worth reading, few on here are now, but you are always there with a witty or educated reply. Our repartee across the pond was fun and made I laugh, which is a bonus in these times. I look forward to commencing 'Battle' again after Phase 4 has been dealt to us or the 19th or both. It is good to lightheartedly lock horns with an educated & witty opponent.

PS. Still interested in this Car ;)

I am looking forward to the release. Out in the void at the moment, but might pop in somewhere to pick up an Artemis suit.
I guess for those who do not think it is ready, they can go on playing Horizons as it will likely be another option on the list of versions, and join in once they are happy everything is fixed, or not at all.
But anyway, Thanks FD for creating a great new version of our favourite game. Roll on May 19th!
