Odyssey Progress

Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra
I want to draw your attention, David, that Elite performed well on weaker systems than yours (Ultra 60 fps, of course).

Therefore, we all very much hope that you will make sure that your employees keep their previous promise.
Will Odyssey have the same graphic impact as the current engine in terms of performance or will you need to upgrade your video card?
Odyssey will be optimised to run on your current setting for Elite Dangerous.
We're not playing your game for super modern graphics. This is confirmed by the number of concurrent users who bought the game, despite the sharp increase in system requirements.

Thanks for the personal answer. о7

So, my rig is pretty similar to Braben's here, but a 980Ti, and I ran the game at Ultra in Horizons, but now High in Odyssey. I still get 120 FPS (limited) in deep space, but it's more like 30-40 FPS in concourses and settlements.

I would really like to see what FPS Braben is getting with his setup, because I think at Ultra, I'd be getting like 20 FPS now. If he's getting closer to 60, we really need a full listing of his graphics settings, and whatever other black magic is in use there. If David himself, or at least someone else at Frontier could comment on that, I would really appreciate it.

An apology goes a very long way, especially since i think many including myself can see the promise and novelty that Odyssey's features bring, once those bugs and performance issues are dealt with. I've even been converted to the idea of the first-person shooter in Elite, despite having been previously adamant that i would not use it, and that is due to its high-quality feel, present and identifiable even with the currently low frame-rate.

My own rig consists of an Nvidia 1060gtx card, and a Ryzen 5 3600x processor, and for the most part the frame-rate is on the low side compared to Horizons, but is mostly acceptable with the exception of stations. Lastly, at the risk of sounding like a flatterer, for many Brits who grew up with Commodore machines playing the early Elite games, the Braben name is legendary, not to mention one that invokes some (no doubt secretive) national pride, so it's painful when a release turns out like this, but a relief to know that it is being taken seriously. I have full confidence that these problems will be ironed out, i wish you and the team luck, and i thank you for reaching out to the players.

Hi, @David Braben

As I posted elsewhere on here I went back to Horizons as I couldnt run Odyssey (just below min spec) but was amazed to find Horizons runs better on my machine than it did before this update, and by some margin. When I switch to Odyssey (same planet) it's worse looking and runs at 30fps less. To my completely untrained eye I can't see why that should be the case. Im not saying it should run as well as Horizons, or at all well on my machine, but the discrepency between the two is quite stark, especially in places where I'd have thought there would be no real difference (ie stations exteriors, interiors on the landing pad, deep space)

CPU - i5-4590 (3.3ghz)
GPU - GTX 960
RAM - 12gb
Hard Drive - SSD

Looks like the game is having a hard time running smoothly when you increase the resolution by just a bit.
I'm running a 3440x1440 monitor, and turning super sampling down to 0.75 more than doubled my fps basically everywhere, where in many other games, lowering the resolution a bit affects the fps less.

Thanks for that note, but it's not the performance issues that are the core problems with ED:O. It's lack of content, lack of depth, lack of mechanics and length it took to produce it.

Fellow CMDRs, please stop saying "we". I don't to be included in the group of entitled whiners that seem to abound in this forum. You don't speak for the majority, just yourself.
But... but... according to at least one person, if you post something in support of David Braben, you don't exist: You're a bot! So, according to that logic, "we" is the correct form! :/

This is the best thing I have ever read from Frontier. The top guy says "once I get 60 fps on a planet surface on THIS rig, THEN you can call it optimized."

But he's British, so he'd probably call it "optimised."
I mean, this IS the guy who made a whole wireframe galaxy using only 32kb back in the day (assuming my memory of the numbers are accurate). His only adversary is Chris Roberts, who's a bit too much of a perfectionist so that his project's on Valve Time (or maybe a case of "biting off more than you can chew", also known as "There's a REASON publishers put out harsh deadlines and guidelines").

OK, maybe there's that one guy with the pink planets, but that's aimed at a more casual audience...

I've had the odd minor issue too .. not too bad on performance, the odd UI bug .. but on the whole I think it'll be worth going through. As far as it goes, for me, when it's going well EDO is pretty fantastic. I'm on an ultra thin atrmosphere sulphur dioxide world at the moment and the difference from Horizons is night and day.

So cheers to DBOBE for the message, to the team for hotfix 2 etc and to the people reporting bugs. Stay safe and ELITE!

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
thankyou for all the hard work you and your team are doing, i hope it not to far away for us to land on earth!!

Mr. Braben,

As CEO of Frontier I understand you have to make some very tough decisions. Your company is responsible for the livelihoods of many.

However, with video game production, it is not a simple matter of "buy low, sell high". You are selling entertainment.

If, for example, the Queen decided to visit your facility or even your home, you would undoubtedly go whole hog to ensure everything went perfectly. The entire event would be finely reviewed to make sure everything went well. You would make sure Her Majesty was thoroughly entertained and that back up scenarios were in place in case things went awry. You might even research as to what The Queen might be allergic to! You would be attentive to her discourse.

The people who are purchasing your entertainment may not be royalty, but we are legion and our time deserves respect and honesty. It goes without saying that beautiful new things are almost useless if you are constantly crashing and cannot see them.

Thank you for listening.

The fact that David has taken this onboard personally shows the dedication of the whole frontier team and their guilt and shear regret when things do not go quite as planned. Things happen, there is a lot of code, but Im sure it will improve just as Horizons did and ED when it first launched. Yes things still need to be addressed but overall, the game is evolving massively while they have tried to please everybody in the process in all gameplay choices.

A couple of suggestions.

1. Fix mining in hotspots where you use mining lasers and do not get mats advertised in thos hotspots except when deep core mining. Thas been an issue since Patch 1 or horizons and a multitude of tickets have be raised, some of which marked as fixed even though they were not.

2. Bring out the Panther Clipper XL as promised during the build up to the players in newsletter #08 and #13, I think the non combat players at least deserve this as most of whats been released has been combat related including ships. Most nmon combat has been scaled back such as decent cargo profit runs, laser mining etc.

Not everybody in this game feeds their ego doing pew pew everynight so give something back to non combat players.

Thx
