Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

Speaking of wiping saves, do I need to start my X4 save over to enjoy the new content in the X4 DLC? I suspect I would for any story mode stuff, but could I visit Sol and see Terran ships with the "Cradle Of Humanity" DLC from my current game save?
In X4 i always started with a new save but that should not be obligatory.
I enjoy new starts there as I tend to make X4 a spreadsheet simulator in the end taking over the whole game economy with own stations and transportation :)

Edit: And DLCs tend to add new start points telling the story from a different perspective.

So... Is X4 worth buying? Asking for a friend (who hasn't touched the X series since Terran Reunion)

Cheers. If there was a space sim that had Elite's sense of scale, EVE's economy and lore/role playing community, X3's station building and customisation, and Freelancer's soul (which, let's face it, is largely John Rhys-Davies) then I, er I mean my friend, would be very, very happy.

I was a skeptic myself, because I wasn't getting into X3 which I've owned for awhile. But X4 was on sale (before I started this thread), and after wavering back and forth I decided to pull the trigger on it.

And now I'm addicted! The big thing that makes X4 enjoyable to me that is missing from X3 is the first-person aspect of the game. It gives me that sense of immersion, and anyone who knows me knows I need my immersion! I'm a pilot in a ship rather than being a ship, and I like wandering around stations looking for potential crewmates, watching ships come and go, admiring my own ships, etc.

I'm still very new with a very humble "fleet" (just bought my 4th ship last night). I actually like management games, so being able to hire crew to go out and mine for me or run trade routes is great, while I can continue to fly my personal ship exploring, running missions, chasing bad guys, etc.

So yeah, it's worth buying IMO, though I'd wait for the Summer Steam Sale in a couple of weeks.

Disclaimer - X4 is not ED, though it does scratch many of the same itches for me.

With the right management, Elite could become all of those things... But, erm, yeah.... Any alternatives?

First i suggested a merger between Egosoft and Frontier - but Egosofts releases are not that bug free either 🤔
Notice how I waited a very long time between the release of X4 and my purchase of X4.

This is why my OP is still technically true, because unless Frontier really screws up, I will be buying Odyssey someday. How long has it been since X4 released and their latest update? Maybe that's how long I'll wait to get Odyssey.

Indeed, but they do allow the community to add and fix things. Can still remember downloading Universal Traders script and being amazed. I was then further amazed with mods like this and other incredibly useful mods were packaged into an official add on.
Edit: X2 and X3 versions

Then I fear Old Duck will be a Dead Duck by then, X4 now is 4 or 5 years old, i think

Exactly the last X3 TC Addon is completely compiled from user mods and submissions. 👍

Edit: And X3 has an ingame programming language that's sadly absent in later installations.

I'll definitely give it a look in the sale. I can't remember what ultimately put me off, bit I enjoyed the management aspect in terran conflict too (especially feeling like I was in control of a larger fleet) but I think eventually I got too mired in trying to make money quickly for the cool ships rather than just enjoy myself.

I remember seeing a few promotional shots of space stations in nebulae which reminded me a bit of Tachyon: the Fringe (played at seconds per frame on a pc that barely supported it) and Freelancer. Pretty, pretty environments is definitely a thing for me, and you're right, that's much nicer from a first person perspective.

Ah, yes, I think this is what put me off, haha.

I've eyed up X4 for a while - a friend of mine showed it to me but his PC isn't powerful enough to run it smoothly (and looked pretty poor due to lower graphics), plus the UI was a bit ... much... but now with EDO's UI and graphical issues... maybe it's time?

PS - I did look up Steam reviews, what put me off was the volume of negative ones referring to the AI. Not really sure how big a problem really is in reality.

Honestly, X3 is severely dated graphics wise and for a beginner in the old X series it's really hard to get into. Lots of deep mechanics created over 2 decades of sequels...

I must admit I never warmed to the alien races in the X series. Space lizards and space whales, and something forgettable, if I recall!

I'm starting to catch up on the reviews (including screenshots and YouTube videos), and it looks pretty bad. My original concern was for the current state of Odyssey, but now my concern is regarding the current state of Frontier. From what I'm seeing post-patch, I'm beginning to have strong doubts that Frontier still possesses the developer talent needed to fix Odyssey. The things I'm seeing really make me question if they know what they are doing.

Dear donors, I may owe you a refund, because after this last update, I have no desire to even install Odyssey on my computer, let alone give Frontier money for it... "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."

This is NOT what I was expecting to wake up to this morning.
Damn ... where are emoji responses when you need them. I can't "like" that post now can I.

😟

Best compliment I can give about Odyssey is they’ve built something that’s good enough to be worth being angry about.

There’s definitely something there, but god it’s like a sketch of a game.
"Here's what you could've had..."
