Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

I think you might get "a lot of fun" with the new shaders.
My theory at the moment is, we got half a finished work.

The old lightning model was not fit for detailed interiors, planets etc at this level of fidelity, they aimed for. So they switched to a new lightning system.
This works well was we can see indoors or in settlements, on planets with lots of shadows.
But this also needed an update of the shaders for the old content in space etc, as these were still optimized for the old lightning system, which they did not finish yet.

Hence the mixup in lightning atm IMHO.

Funny enough, the only thing affected by the gamma setting i have found so far is the legs HUD and the main menu.

TLDR: They didn't finish on time for release
I think your theory is right on the money, especially the unfinished part.

My opinion of the latest patch will have to wait until I can spend some quality time in VR and/or 2D mode at settlements. I had just enough time this morning before work to check Pioneer Supplies in 2D to see if it’s stock changed (it didn’t, still has a dominator suit :() At the station, my new computer was getting a solid 60 FPS, which is my monitor’s refresh rate.

Personally, I’m fine exploring until they get the problems with settlements fixed. Last night, the highlight of my evening, before I Buckyballed to the next station on my route back to the Bubble, was bacterial colony and meteorite hunting in my SRV on an icecap, with the local primary low above some distant mountains. The sky in that direction was a lovely yellow, that faded to a greenish-blue half way across the sky.

The evening was marred by the VR-DSS bug (in the patch notes) and the VR-free camera bug (not in the patch notes). I’d post a screen shot, but apparently I need to reenable that option in my current version of @Aussiedroid’s marvelous script. I was devastated to find that my screenshot folder was empty. :)

Best compliment I can give about Odyssey is they’ve built something that’s good enough to be worth being angry about.
My interest in Odyssey stems from my overall affection for Horizons. Separate the on-foot stuff from Elite core, and then Odyssey becomes much less inspiring IMO. There are WAY better shooters that have been around a long time now. I would argue the original Mass Effect 2 and 3 on my PS3 are much better than Odyssey at the moment (again, looking at Odyssey as a separate entity rather than expanding Horizons gameplay).

Disclaimer - this argument is based on screenshots, videos, and reviews of others.

Haven't posted there yet, so I'll admit I'm curious about your opinion (good or bad, don't care).

P.S. I don't know if you're looking for a tiny bit of inspiration, something good in a sea of crap ... but these two videos (by @BlackMaze) made me feel a lot better somewhow (and I've got one of my own coming soon too).

I literally pre ordered Odyssey on the strength of my experiences following the Ghosts of the Adamastor story in Horizons (whilst unlocking Farseer).

I'm about ready to hop in an AspX and do that run again, but I've no idea if they've integrated any of the on foot content into the Horizons abandoned settlements. My biggest fear right now is that I'll get to Geological Survey 23b and be bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

Don't bother. Been there and...

Don't bother.

I must be feeling salty today, but all the "Thank you so much, you guys are great!" responses in patch and hotfix threads kinda rubs me the wrong way. It's like a battered wife thanking her husband for getting her an ice pack.
It's also very buggy apparently. They fixed the culling, by putting too much of it. So now stuff disappear even when viewed. I saw 2 reddits post with ship disappearing and entire building to.

Also, while my fps did improve, it's still too low to be acceptable.

I was inspired when I read today's patch notes. Then I started reading the "on the ground" reports of the reality of the patch, and that let all the air out of my tires of enthusiasm.

That's okay, I won't totally give up hope on Odyssey until this Fall. I'm more of a winter gamer than a summer gamer anyhow. And by Fall, I'll be able to get it on sale!

Same. I think it stems from knowing how utterly deluded leadership types can be...

"Sure, there are people who aren't happy, but just look at the number of people thanking us for doing what we should have done prior to release! Virtual high fives all round!"

Sigh. 🙇‍♂️

Same here - credit absolutely where credit's due - but all the premature congratulations (especially when patch notes cover issues that aren't actually fixed, or not properly fixed) remind me of completely botched go-lives I went through in the past that were deemed "great successes" /Borat

None of the Horizons-only POIs have received some EDO love to encourage on-foot interaction. Another missed opportunity for better overlap/integration between EDO & EDH.

Considering how poorly optimised it is, it's good on you. My computer is really heating up the room with Odyssey, so it will better this winter :D

Hmm after the last hotfix and disregarding some QoL fixed in patch 2, it feels exactly like pre patch 2 to me.
So a patch day - for what exactly? A few frames here and worse Lod in the end...

Subjective, I know.
