Development Update 1 - June

Good example of what I said in my previous post. You can't marry the two, never will. ED will never have that scope of activities. NMS will never have proper 1:1 planets, orbits, BGS or flight model. ED will never allow you to dig tunnels. NMS will never have the prpper EDO conflict zones. And so forth. Both are great games. Neither should be scorned for not doing what the other did.

What does the 1:1 galaxy/planets really bring to the table other than 'we did it' ?? Jumping form system to system gets old very quick and you can do it in all 3 and many others

BGS? Always has been and still is.. Broken

Flight Model. That is good.. Shame NPC AI is pathetic. Making AI ships over engineered and bullet sponges does not make it better AI... And of course if that doesn't work they fallk back on girly run away.

Each game has it's place for sure. The question is which place ya want to be :)
 
Planets no, but I like the ship aestethics a bit better, and the flora of Odyssey isn't exactly awe inspiring.

If you read the codex on EDO flora, the one's we have sound very plausible primitive plants to me. I suspect that science is one possible reaon why there aren't thousands or varieties. That and the environments being no atmosphere, not much atmosphere or lots of radiation. That and the fact that main thrust of the development would have been in deisgning the hand tool. And the energy tool. And the ID scanner and the guns and the bases and the alarm mechanics the back end and getting it to fit with the BGS, and Switzerland have equalised ..

If you genuinely dont see the advantage of it then that's fine and other games may suit you better. Someone else here said he doesn't care about the flight model as long as you get from A to B. Also perfectly fine. Others feel that having bouncing pineapples on purple mini-spheres isn't the sci-fi vibe they prefer. Also good.

Just pick the game you prefer. Arguing ones preference is better so all games should be like that is not a very interesting discussion or perspective, to me. I am happy there are alternatives for those who don't care for what ED brings to the table. :)

I'm just talking about screenshots, I don't even have SC.
And I'm no exobiologist but yesterday I found a gas giant with 5 tenous atmo moons and all 5 had several identical plants, down to size and color.
That wasn't very believable... NMS trumps EDO in that regard by quite a margin imho.
 
It's a problem with almost all space games. It tends to attract people looking for the 'everything' game, and no game will become it. Fans of NMS accepted it for what it is now; a cool 'arcade' builder/survival game with a distinct art direction and accessible gameplay. Fans of ED are still fighting back the 'end of the dream' (why can't it combine ED and [insert other game]?!?. Fans of SC are still deeply asleep.

It's one of the few things I like about OP: Arf clearly spelled out ED will never be that Everything Game because it only exists in the imagination.

Good to see you still fighting the good fight against the contamination of attempted comparisons of ED with SC . Pity you have your head up your **** in this regard though , but do carry on .

Enginge works alright better then anywhere else i have seen. Oh wait, did you discovered a Space Sim game that looks better than this, that none of us know about?
This is what is called a confirmation bias. Just because you find a few cases that confirm what you believe doesn't mean you should ignore all the cases that contradict your beliefs. Yes, it is possible to find situations where the problems of the graphics engine are hardly noticeable or even imperceptible. Does this mean that it is working properly ? No. Your argument is even a step below el famoso "Work on my PC" quality label.
For each looking good screenshot on the forum, you can find hours of craps video on youtube.
 
Its why FidelityFX CAS inclusion in Update5 is the most interesting thing for me. I dont see basic optimizations getting EDO a 50% performance boost or better, and it kinda needs it. DLSS 2.0 requires DX12, and only works on some NVidia cards. AMD FidelityFX SuperResolution however works on both AMD and NVidia cards, works in DX11, and works on consoles. If they can get that working in the coming months it would provide a pretty big performance gain even if nothing else imrpoves. The fact they are integrating FidelityFX APIs now is a promising step.

Lol, always nice to see a commando get upset when their Ultimate Game is Offended.

It's not even about ED, SC cannot compare to anything on the market because it is simply pure garbage. ED, X4, NMS, Space Engineers: all cool games. SC? Hot crap. Disagree? Cool, enjoy your game. :)

Mate, many modern games cannot be played at 4k at a solid max FPS without DLSS, or now AMD SS. CP2077, TR and so on. Nothing wrong with that. SuperResolution is specifically designed to greatly improve performance, NOT quality.
 
I don't know how it is for 4k or 2k Monitor users, but on 1080p reducing Supersampling below 1.0 is not a solution i would take, that just forceful downgrade.
I think you can just do it with a 4k monitor in a halfway still acceptable quality - with a lower resolution you will most likely have a problem to read anything on screen.

Are you sure you are not confusing FidelityFX (the suite) with CAS (part of it?). But anyway, sure. It should not replace optimization.

But load of crap or not, if it runs my game on 4k 60fps while looking properly I don't care much how it's done.

I'm talking about CAS. The first purpose, like i said, is to compensate the blur of AA. But it appear that upscale add also blur that can be compensate the same way by CAS.
Super Resolution is an all in one including an upscaler and CAS. But since ED already include an upsacler, it need only CAS to get an equivalent to Super Resolution.

Well thanks for that. Now we have just another month to wait for the next enlightening post.
With settlement frame rates being so bad that Odyssey is just not enjoyable - I'm pretty sure I'll have completely lost interest in Elite by then.

Maybe I'll return the Beta ends and Console release happens.
