Guard AI is still terrible

I was at a settlement traversing on rooftops as usual.
Then I peeked over the edge to check if the coast was clear and as I did so I was targeted for a scan. So I froze and stood still on the rooftop.
The guard had no way how to reach me so she stood below me like a muppet.

Then the warning about being targeted for a scan disappeared but the guard was still not moving.
After a good 3 minutes I decided to jump down to her.
And as I did so I was immediately targeted for not complying with the scan.

So my stealth mission once again turned into a bloodbath because the AI is way too “digital” - it’s either TRUE or FALSE with these guys.

More tweaking needed here.

I've had something similar happen twice. If the guard can't find a way to reach you the scan notification disappears, but is still active (forever?) and at that point if you move at all the guard will go hostile.

  • Smoothed AI pathing as they navigate around between areas of interest (AI will walk around more naturally in their set directions).

Yeah. When the dude with the post apocalyptic outfit and plasma rifle strapped to his back shows up and starts browsing the terminals it might be time to get unfriendly. On the other hand murdering each and every one of them without raising an alarm complete with gps lojack installed to find that last holdout amuses me greatly. One of the few pleasures in this DLC besides a non-tidal locked atmo world at sunset.

Frankly, there is ZERO reason for a non-employee to be in a Dominator/Maverick suit with a big sniper rifle/assault rifle/grenade launcher and sidearm and cutting tool to be jumping around the facility rooftops.

If I was the Site Manager it would be shoot on sight!
See this is why the flight suit should be useful... you should have reduced "suspicion" if you wear one in settlements, allowing you to not be scanned or even be seen as a threat if you're seen near an overloaded/ehacked device. Give them SOME use.

Flight suit: can only pack a sidearm, no tools (save for the scanner, so basically you're equipped as any other civilian on a settlement), but you can pack lets say 3-4x the consumables, that way you can use more e-hacks and since you won't get scanned much it's worth having many on you. And let's say while you're more vulnerable to severe temperatures your PSG lasts an INSANELY long time to compensate, just in case you do get caught and need to survive until you make it to your ship/cab comes.

See, this is the sort of thing I'd like. Suspicion/reactions that depend on the kind of gear you're packing, leading to dominators getting scanned more often, mavericks pretty much instantly catching the blame for a cut panel, and so on.

As it is they're like.... "good to see a new face around here" when the face is like...

TBH I thought that's what they were for too until I realised they weren't.
My first few days playing Odyssey I was afraid to do ANYTHING within view of a skimmer. Surely those radar lines must mean they're watching and scanning, right? I was even sure they could see through my cloned ID.

Nope.

I can murder a guard right in front of one and it just HONK HONKs and whirrs on along. They aren't even capable of identifying corpses. COME ON.

I'd like to say even though it's obvious Odyssey was outsourced, the work that was put into it by the individual artists and 3rd party developers is great. The work is good. It's the implementation into ED that's horrible. I feel that needs to be acknowledged and I'm willing to bet that 3rd party gave FDev all the tools they needed to do many of the things we are clamoring for in the Suggestions subforum, but those things just didn't make it because of time constraints or something else took priority. Because I can't imagine whoever designed the skimmers, which are very obviously supposed to be eyes in the sky, didn't intend for them to be such.

Yup, at first I was even worried to take a memory chip from the table when the skimmer was flying outside the window.

Now I realised they really do jack all.

But frankly, to make any kind of realistic AI would make most foot missions impossible:

  • Why would they allow armed strangers walking around
  • Why would they allow armed stangers inside their offices/lab/hab
  • When an access panel is cut or a door is overloaded and wide open, I mean, it CANT possibly be due to that strange guy who just arrived and is jumping around the rooftops right?
  • Alarms disabled? Defences off? Yeah just walk pass the panel and continue.
  • The power just cut! The alarm didnt sound. It CANT possibly be due to that strange guy who just arrived and is jumping around the rooftops right?
  • Bunch of your colleagues are dead, you can see the corpses. Alarm doesnt seem to be sounding. It CANT possibly be due to that strange guy who just arrived and is jumping around the rooftops right?

Well .. can't have those cosmetics affecting gameplay now can we? CERTAINLY not negatively!!!!!! People pay good fake money for those.

Herpa derpa cosmetics don't affect game development, "it's only cosmetic, so it's fine and I support the devs! Ner!"

Sorry.... It is a pet peeve of mine.

Even if not the cosmetics, the fact that you're walking around in a dominator suit with a shotgun and rocket launcher is like...

"what possible business could the goddamn Doom Slayer have at our little agricultural establishment"

Agree, was just venting

also also: sneaking/crouching

sure, you're not as likely to get spotted if you're crouching
but if they do spot you, they should be like "what the hell is this joker creeping around for, that's suspicious as hell" and not take their eyes off you - possibly going as far as to call the nearest guard over to check you out. In fact, more things should result in "this is weird, take a look at this" without actively going directly hostile or pulling guns, just causing the guards to divert from whatever their usual patrol route is.

Like, you hear guards saying "reporting in" on their patrol routes.
... what if they didn't report in for a while - you'd think the other guards might eventually be like "huh, it's been a while since Bob reported in. Hey bob, you good?" - and if bob doesn't report back, have someone go check out bob's last known position.
That way, silently taking out the guards is all well and good but someone's going to notice that they're not reporting in sooner or later, then go looking for them.

edit: and something less than pulling guns on you if they catch you doing something minor you shouldn't? Like just... telling you to get the hell off their base and giving you a countdown timer before you're considered trespassing. Honestly that'd be an appropriate reaction to being caught with an e-breach or avoiding a scan or something - rather than going full weapons-free, just fine you and tell you to get the hell off their property.

Yep, some granularity and leveraging the fact they have actual people, but the ships have people in, and the "communication" with them is....erm....well I guess it technically exists
