Let's play: Design a mini-pack for a country

I decided to highlight the wetlands and rainforests of this African company in........The Ghana Pack

  1. Geoffroy's black-and-white colobus (aka Ursine colobus): Africa is lacking in monkeys with there being a grand total of 1 in the game. Apparently this endangered monkey is considered sacred by native tribes in parts of it's range

  2. Diana monkey: Another highly endangered monkey from Ghana, this would be included for the same reasons as the above animal.

  3. Red river hog: A pretty iconic and highly requested zoo animal

  4. Marabou stork: Another bird for PZ!

Nice job! The Diana monkey and Colobus are really unique.
Ghana also has a very unique culture, .

Tajikistan

1. Golden Jackal

You could say, we already have enough similar looking canids, but the jackal is not represented ingame. So at least one of this kind should be in this pack.

2. Pallas Cat

Of course! I can't make up a Tajikistan pack without my favorite animal when this favorite animal is roaming around there. It might look grumpy, but hell, it's just a big, cuddly ball of fluff and deserves kisses and huggies - at least from a safe distance and with a glass panel inbetween x)

3. Markhor

Come on, this animal is just so unique and much wanted! Tajikistan has them and so will the -hypothetical- Tajikistan mini pack!

4. Eurasian Lynx

Though I'd think, it'd be better in a whole eurasian pack - Mr.Flufflebutts would definitely in MY Tajikistan pack!

You get... TEXAS!

I proudly present, the Texas Pack!

1) Collared peccary: when I think of Texas, I think mostly of arid places, so this animal fits well.

2) Raccon: just because they go to high school there!

3) Texas longhorn (if we accept domestic animals) or coyote as an alternative:

For the exhibit, I choose the Texas Tortoise, because it's a Texas pack.

Fun fact: I've been in Texas once, but just at Dallas airport, so I don't think it counts 🤣

If anything, narrowing down Madagascar to three habitat and one exhibit species is the most difficult part of this - there are so many good species to choose from. I would go with:

1. Coquerel's sifaka - You could fill an entire pack with lemurs alone - I was tempted to try something different like the Lac Alaotran gentle lemur, the blue-eyed black lemur, the aye-aye or the crowned lemur, but ultimately I think this is one of the more favoured lemur choices.

2. Fossa - The top predator of Madagascar, a rather frequently-kept zoo species and one of the most unique small carnivores - they would represent a carnivore family so far not included at all in Planet Zoo.

3. Malagasy giant rat - Was tempted to go with a bird, but ultimately the idea of a giant rat (both longer and heavier than a meerkat) really appeals to me - this is an endangered Madagascar endemic found in quite a few zoos where they can be kept in outdoor, indoor and nocturnal enclosures.

Exhibit) Panther chameleon - Narrowly beats out the Madagascar giant day and Henkel's leaf-tailed geckos, golden mantella and Madagascar hissing cockroach; ultimately I think the chameleon is the species most people would want.

Love all of these! The first round for everyone is easier, so if you want a second round with a harder country you're welcome!

Like Madagascar, Cuba has a surprising number of good animals - my choices are:

1. West Indian manatee - Not endemic, but would be an effective pack-seller; they are charismatic, kept in a number of zoos and would add a fully-aquatic animal, something currently absent in Planet Zoo.

2. Desmarest's hutia - An endemic tree-climbing rodent, the largest native land mammal of the island and is found in a number of zoos; my local zoo used to keep them and they were fantastic animals to watch.

3. Cuban crocodile - A critically endangered crocodilian that is the most terrestrial of all the crocodiles, one of the most intelligent species of reptile and is part of a successful captive breeding and reintroduction programme.

Exhibit) Allison's anole - The evolutionary radiation of anoles in the Caribbean is one of the most fascinating stories around; this is a colourful species of anole that is essentially endemic to the island.
