Game: Make your own aviary pack?

I have an idea for a game, pick 1-5 animals from each group and make your own Aviary/Bird DLC.

Rules are as follows:

- 20 animals for your DLC in total

- Minimum of one animal choice from each group (ie: can't skip bats, need to choose at least one)

- Maximum five animal choices for any group (if you want more than FIVE use the "other" category)

Groups:

- Parrots (self explanatory; pick 1-5 birds)

- Birds of Prey (eagles, condors, hawks, vultures, owls etc: pick 1-5 birds)

- Water Birds (ducks, swans, geese, pelicans, loons etc; pick 1-5 birds)

- Flightless Birds (ratites, tinamous, penguins etc; pick 1-5 birds)

- Terrestrial Birds (birds that stay predominantly on the ground...think birds that can use flamingo or peacock base models some examples: herons, storks, cranes, secretary birds, spoonbills, and game birds such as pheasants, partridges, quails etc; pick 1-5 birds)

- Passerines (any birds from the Order "Passerines" also known as the song birds; pick 1-5 birds)

- Bats (self explanatory; pick 1-5 bats)

- Other Category (any birds or bats you want and feel are still missing from your pack, and they can be from any of the previous groups or some other group I left out)

Beyond the fact that toucans aren't parrots, the big issue is that the majority of birds, including in aviaries, are the ones that are in that "other" category, so IMO that should be larger, so I'll just be bloating that. Using your subdivisions, though:

1 - Hyacinth macaw
2 - Eclectus parrot

3 - Bald eagle
4 - Peregrine falcon
5 - Andean condor
7 - Egyptian vulture

7 - Great white pelican
8 - Atlantic puffin

9 - North Island brown kiwi

10 - Golden pheasant
11 - Secretarybird
12 - Grey crowned crane

13 - Rodrigues flying fox

14 - Great Indian hornbill
15 - Victoria crowned pigeon
16 - Great blue turaco
17 - Toco toucan
18 - Bali myna
19 - Andean co.ck of the rock
20 - Laughing kookaburra

Your groups are very taxonomically incorrect, and I object to the inclusion of bats in this specific pack, but I'll go with it:
  1. Scarlet macaw
  2. Hyacinth Macaw
  3. Grey Parrot
  4. Bald Eagle
  5. Griffon vulture
  6. Californian condor
  7. Egyptian Vulture
  8. Peregrine falcon
  9. Mandarin duck
  10. Mallard duck
  11. Great white Pelican
  12. Black swan
  13. Emu
  14. Greater Rhea
  15. Secretary bird
  16. Roseate Spoonbill
  17. White Stork
  18. Eurasian hoopoe
  19. Herring seagull
  20. Indian Flying Fox

Lol I hear ya wasn't going for a zoology lesson, just general groups. There are 41 genera of birds, I tried to categorize 41 groups into general groups (mostly terrestrial, mostly aquatic, flightless, parrots, and birds of prey) None of them are taxonomic groups, except parrots (and I don't care if people want to put toucans in there)

Technically birds are reptiles. So if I wanted to be zoologically correct I guess I could have called this the reptile pack (and just omitted bats) but that starts to seem more like school.

I would suggest adding a songbird section as well, that would cover a lot of the other birds for it and a lot of them are common options in zoos that have larger aviaries.

I think Antimony was saying the same thing, it's not a bad idea. Could take this game from a 2 to a solid 3 😆

Parrots
  • Hyacinth Macaw (Vulnerable)
  • Yellow-Crested Cockatoo (Critically Endangered)
Birds of Prey
  • Snowy Owl (Least Concern)
  • Golden Eagle (Least Concern)
  • Bald Eagle (Least Concern)
  • Eurasian Eagle Owl (Least Concern)
  • California Condor (Critically Endangered)
Water Birds
  • Atlantic Puffin (Vulnerable)
  • Pink Backed Pelican (Least Concern)
Flightless Birds
  • Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Vulnerable)
  • North Island Kiwi (Vulnerable)
Terrestrial Birds
  • Satyr Tragopan (Near Threatened)
  • Mikado Pheasant (Near Threatened)
Passerine
(I know we were supposed to choose at least one but I spent ages looking up which birds counted and I couldn't choose any of them. Most of them are very boring (for a zoo) and practically ALL of them are tiny. I feel that in-game they would just be far too small and would get lost in even the smallest habitat)

Bats (Bats may be more suited to a nocturnal pack then an aviaries pack but I do love them and want them in-game)
  • Vampire Bat (Least Concern) (Might be too small - not certain of their size but there could be an interesting enrichment item added for them)
  • Spectacled Flying Fox (Endangered)
  • Egyptian Fruit Bat (Least Concern)
Other
  • Grey Hawk (Least Concern)
  • Peregrine Falcon (Least Concern)
  • Harpy Eagle (Near Threatened)
  • Toco Toucan (Least Concern) (Not sure what group they would fit in!)

As you can probably tell I love birds of prey best out of all birds. I don't know if it would be possible to put into the game but I think it would be really awesome if bird of prey displays were incorporated as I love them.

Plenty of passerines are at least close to meerkat size (especially corvids and birds of paradise). I think we could go as small as the Bali myna (25cm)--one helpful factor is that most of them are very colorful and would stick out in lush greenery. But the vampire bat is only a third of that size, so I don't know how it would be a better fit.

Lol for the record there's over 6,500 species of passerines...you couldn't find even ONE you like??

Lots of choices...Lyrebirds, Bowerbirds, Andean -of-the-rock, every species of finch, orioles, cardinals, birds of paradise, corvids (rooks, jays, crows, ravens), swallows, oxpeckers, weaverbirds, tanagers, warblers, sparrows, chickadees.

No I couldn't find even ONE I liked. Personally I find most birds in a zoo very boring and I will pass by them without looking at all, aside from birds of prey and more unusual looking birds (such as puffins and kiwis). As for crows, ravens, sparrows and the like why would I go to a zoo to see them when I can watch them for free in my living room? I personally would be disappointed if a DLC slot was used for a sparrow!

I thought birds of paradise were very small lol, shows how little I know (tbf I'm not that into birds really) I really had no idea how small the vampire bat was I just thought they would be able to make a cool enrichment for it somehow (maybe something like the pinata enrichment that they land on and look like they were biting it) but you're right, it probably would be far too small :(

I agree mostly however the superb lyrebird is an amazing songbird. Just check out its ability to mimic sounds on YouTube. From babies crying, drills and R2D2. Plus there laughing kookaburra rendition is spot on. Would love for them to include it and add the ability to mimic sounds of other birds and people.

You're more into the birds that EAT the passerines lol
