Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

I now think what Codger was saying about 1 Galaxy, referred only ED. Which, reading what others have said about ED, is perfectly correct. Sorry about my earlier comment Codger, I just misunderstood.

If I might be so brazen to say, here's how I understand the setup is:

There is one Universe that includes everything.

The Universe is full of billions, trillions of Galaxies.
Our own Galaxy is called the Milky Way.

Each Galaxy is made up of billions of Solar Systems.
Our own Solar System is called Sol and is part of the Milk Way.

Each Solar System is made up of a Star or in some cases a number of Stars, together with numerous Planets.
Our own Solar System has one Star (which we call the Sun) together with eight Planets. One of these Planets is what we call the Earth.

In the case of ED, there is just one Galaxy. That Galaxy being the Milky Way and of course, includes our Solar System with the Sun and the Earth.

Any errors ......... please advise ASAP. ;)

I've made a couple of "small" changes to the above, which, although not helping with naming clarification, better reflect current practice. The changes are shown in red below.
(Please see the latest updated post #569)

Our own solar system is called the Solar System (denoted by the capitalization to distinguish it from other solar systems) and is part of the Milk Way.

What a lovely photo. I can't have a pet because of where I live and I spend too much time away from "home".
But what a wonderful pet a dog is: it will always loves you, always so happy to see you, faithful, protective, never complains, never questions your decisions, accepts whatever.

My best friend here in "Melbourne" is a magpie (a bird), who I can almost hand feed. He, maybe she, is very important to me, particularly being on my own in these COVID times.
We have a chat most morning. :)

Just for interest: do you consider the Galaxy Map as an accurate interpretation of what is shown and said in the real world ?
I think it's close enough for stars and star systems. For example my home system in Elite is a binary star system consisting of stars Atagat A and Atagat B. On the galaxy map it is labelled Atagat and this mirrors how astronomer label such system. E.g. they label the ternary star system with stars Alpha Centauri A, B and C as Alpha Centauri. The labelling of planets and moons in the system map (planets having a number, moons having a letter) is quite different from the convention astronomers use though.

Thanks for the re-directions. I'll take a look soon.
I'm not sure if you've had a look at my updated space terminology relationship note in my post #401 but I've tried to include suggestions shown in the references you gave me. Unfortunately, it has only lead to a loss of clarification but if that's the way it is in the real world, then, IMHO, it needs to be included. Initially, I'm not interested in what ED has done, and will only look at their space terminology relation after I hopefully have it right for the real world.
No disrespect to you and others here at the forum, but I'm going to show what I believe is correct to an astronomic expert at the University I'm associate with. I just need to be satisfied what I am suggesting is perfectly correct.

So far, using what I have put together, has been hugely advantageous for me when playing ED-H, at the forum, and in the real world. In truth, I didn't really know what a Galaxy was, and what it's relationship to a solar system is, or that we have a special Solar System ("ours"), and I don't think I was/am alone. ;)

Anyway, anything you'd like to contribute would be most welcoming. (y)

I know you didn't get on so well with the last Down to Earth Astronomy video, but his galaxy map video starts by talking about the map icons.

After running through it 4 or 5 times I was able to follow what he saying. Apart from him talking too fast, English being his second language, I just wish he would slow down!
Anyway, thank you, I got what I wanted, I think, so let's move on. 😕

The issue with some Elite YouTubers is they forget the position people new to the game are in. Hawkes Gaming video on materials gathering has you travelling 1200ly to where you can max out 4 out of 5 top grade raw materials - it is worth the trip. What he didn't realise when he made the video using his engineered ASP X, is you need a 37ly jump range to reach the system. Lots of people got half way and had to turn back judging by the comments.

The trouble is, he is trying to produce a video for pilots, like myself, who totally don't understand the skill he is trying to portray! I'm sorry, there's no excuse and somebody should tell him! I was a teacher, Head of a Dep't, responsible for 21 teaching staff. You wouldn't let a thing like that happen! It could be easily and quietly fixed. But someone has to tell him and show him how!

Actually all of the things you see on your hud are holograms.
I did a bit of checking, and here's how to do it! Clear perspex screen? No Wombat, you are wayout ......

Nice looking pilot too ..... :D

Wooops!
Just tried to perform an emergency manual landing on a Carrier.
I'd got badly "burnt" getting too close to a Sun and a few modules including my auto-landing module were damaged. :(
I just couldn't get her down safely. My position on the pad was out. Not out by much, but enough. :( Then I ran out of time .......... and upon getting airborne, to try again, hit something and ....... BOOM!
I was able to use my ship insurance and I was resurrected back where I started before I commenced the journey. :cautious:
Haven't checked to see what I've lost, but so far things seem ok.
I need to re-practice manual landing.
It's just the last couple of feet that seem the problem. Visually, it looks fine, however ......... 😖
I was surprised how sympathetic ED was after my Sidewinder blew up!
The insurance (which I didn't know I was paying a premium) covered its replacement with what seems absolutely no penalty to me the pilot. Seemed very generous, unless maybe they thought I wasn't completely to blame. 😕

One thing I did see in the video was that Hawkes could map a journey over a very long distance. 54 star jumps! When I tried to do the same to the James K Winston Station, it wouldn't do it. I couldn't follow how Hawkes did it (surprise, surprise) but it's something I need to learn as that will be my next assignment after I've bought my Hauler.

It might be that your Sidewinder simply does not have the jump range to reach the destination you want to get to. The Hauler with a 2A Frameshift Drive or even the Sidewinder with an A rated Drive will likely make it.
Here is something that made me laugh - I bought a Dolphin in the Ceos system once and they only had the 4E Frameshift Drive available for It anywhere in that star system. It did not have the jump range needed to get to the next nearest star - it was trapped in Ceos 😅
I sold it immediately.

Hawkes has moved on to other games. He's a self-described 'power gamer' who really likes to figure out game mechanics, and then come up with the 'fastest and best' way of accumulating wealth or materials.

His vids can be useful when you're having trouble finding something, but following what he does too closely is foolish if you ask me. He ruins the game (for himself and others) by turning it into nothing but grinding as fast as possible. He was completely done with all Odyssey engineering in just a couple weeks. He stated that he spent over 300 hours during that time just grinding away and getting all the materials, and trying to figure out the most efficient method. Then he was bored and quit playing EDO completely. Never even updated his tips videos, which are partly wrong now because the game changed.

Which is fine, it's his game to play as he wishes of course. He seems to enjoy it.

He recently put out a video for No Man's Sky (another space game I like to play), and watching through it I discovered several good tips on how things worked that I hadn't understood before (and I've played that game a lot). He's very good at figuring out how things actually work in a game.

But for me personally, I like to simply play the game. Take it slow. Enjoy the journey. Figure out stuff for myself as much as possible. Take some screenshots. Get into the feeling of actually being a space pilot or cowboy or whatever the game is about. That's where my enjoyment lies.

Anyway, be wary of watching that stuff. It can possibly ruin the game (or parts of it) if you follow his methods too closely :p

PS The galaxy map is capable of plotting very long routes, but there are caveats based on where you are in space, and what ship you're in. When you have specific questions about that let us know :)

Definitely use Hawkes tips to get over barriers like finding certain hard to obtain materials you really want for some engineering task that would otherwise be boring and too time consuming to get. But if you follow everything he does on route to more credits than you can spend as fast as possible, you can end up skipping past the joy of mission running in ships like the Cobra MK III and DBX, and tinkering with them a while to improve them before moving on to better ships.
I'm guilty of this. I actually went back and bought a Cobra to experiment with combat in after owning a Python and Krait Phantom. The DBX is another I bought later still and it puts a smile on my face - not to be missed out.

Very interest. Thanks. Yes I'll get back to regarding plotting long journeys when I'm about to start on them.

Ha! I almost got trapped the other day trying to dock on that fleet carrier, I desperately needed fuel and I had been badly damage getting too close to that Sun. I was putting her down manually, but I couldn't get her lined up properly! The receptionist was not happy and finally ordered me off the ship! It was then that I crashed and blew her up!
It was the best thing that happen as I got so when treated when seeking a replacement ship. Ha!
