Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

I was surprised how sympathetic ED was after my Sidewinder blew up!
The insurance (which I didn't know I was paying a premium) covered its replacement with what seems absolutely no penalty to me the pilot. Seemed very generous, unless maybe they thought I wasn't completely to blame. 😕
The starter ship is a free gift so the insurance cost to you is nothing, until you add modules that you paid for onto it then there will be a small charge. The charge will increase the more you pay for the ship and modules.

The Pilots Federation takes care of the insurance premiums etc until you, like @Tyres O'Flaherty reach EliteII when you either have to start paying for your insurance or at least pay a higher charge.

Thanks for that. (y) It makes sense.
I would have been devastated if I had been severely punished. It was a small mistake with disastrous results.
Being "forgiven" made me breath a great sigh of relief. Well down ED.

Hmmmm ......... I left the Station to make a delivery to another solar system, but the system was hidden behind a planet. When I tried to engage supercruise, I was told I could not, as expected, because my destination was obscured. For me to sight my target, I needed to cover a considerable distance at a normal speed.
Is there any way I could speed up this requirement? Thank You.

Question:
Is there a way of "shutting down" ED (ie pausing it, saving internet time) without closing it?
Hitting the "Pause" key doesn't seem to do it. You can tell ED is still connected to the server by the "Noise" your notebook is making, together with the heat it is giving out. ;)
I might want to go away for half an hour and would like to keep ED "running". But that physical costs me in Gb's (more likely Mb's), but however, it's $$$.
Thank You.

You are trying to engage hyperdrive to get to the new system, which is correct, but like you say, you can't because of a planet in the way.
You need to engage super cruise to get past the planet quicker.
I assume it's taking a considerable amount of time because you are flying at normal cruising speed?

Yes, I understand that. But I think that's the case whether I leave the SZM's on or off. Is that right?
The markers just, well, mark the starter systems. Whether you have them on or off, once you leave that newbie area, and dock at another station, you can't go back.

I have no idea about that. I am on console so just shut it all down when afk for a while.

You have to quit the game to remove your ship and if using the SRV, the SRV from the game.

Yes, normal cruise speed.
I use the <J> to enter both supercruise and hyperdrive. I didn't think you could select one or the other ........ 😮

What does "you can't go back" really mean ?
Can't go back to that solar system ?
You can't go where ?
Thanks.

No not the SRV. It's when piloting the ship.
Normally, I'm sitting in the cockpit in the hanger.
I hit <p> to go into Pause and that takes me to the Main Menu waiting for me to hit RESUME and return to the cockpit.
But while it's in Pause, it doesn't "stop" ED. You can hear it churning away in the background chewing up connection MB. It's doing that now while I'm here at forum! :(
Maybe all I can do is shut it down ED .......
Then I have to fire it up again, which takes an annoying 2 or 3 minutes. 😢

Ha! While I've been in Pause (away posting at the forum, here in other words), my ship has repositioned itself so that I can now clearly see the solar system I wish to supercruise to. :p

I have an additional key bound just for entering supercruise. I use K.
I did this to solve the exact issue you are facing now. Sometimes you have to get into supercruise before you jump to another system.

Even playing Solo, it's still an online multi player game and you cannot pause it.

Yes, again makes perfect sense. If it takes me 2 to 3 minutes to fire it up, you can't expect it to shut down when pausing it.
It just goes to sleep although I think it dreams a lot, which I'm paying for. ;)
I'm on a "Pre-Paid Plan". $50 a month for 35Gb. I don't have a 12months plan because under normal circumstances I'm not in Australia, I'm in Bali for 8 months. I used 3.1Gb last night mainly on running ED (I think) so the 35Gb won't last long at that rate. Although last night was an exception, running u-tube videos here at the Forum.
Sorry ....... boring old man's stuff ...... 🤪

You have normal cruising speed, super cruise (which is 'faster than light' travel to get you around a system) then hyperdrive to get you to another system.
You will have to check your key bindings to see what is set for super cruise.

Can't go back means just that. You will be banned from the entire newbie area.

That drain on your data will be YouTube, not ED.

So that you are not chasing round in circles putting the Hauler together later, here is a suggested build for the Hauler and a link to the places where you can buy all the parts in one station:
If you have credits to spare for a 3A Fuel Scoop you could upgrade from the 3C to scoop faster. Any Refuel time under 40 seconds to fill the tank is good, though.

On the next form, where it says Reference System, enter the name of the system you are in and click Find Stations and it will show you the closest stations to you that sell this Hauler build:
This is how you find things you want to buy without wasting a lot of time flying around to different stations.
Sorry,I don't understand this (your post shown above........).
"On the next form, where it says Reference System, enter the name of the system you are in and click Find Stations and it will show you the closest stations to you that sell this Hauler build: "
Firstly, which of the above two sites are you talking about ? Coriolis or EDDB ?
What's "the next form" ?
Thank You.

The link takes you directly to EDDB with all the Hauler modules already selected (like a shopping list) ready to click the Find stations button so you know where to get the Hauler plus all parts. One of the entries on the form is Reference system - enter the name of the system you are currently in then click Find stations to see a list of places you can buy the Hauler and modules you need. Nearest station is at the top of the list.

There is a mistake in this post I made. The Hauler takes a size 2 fuel scoop, where I referred to size 3 fuel scoop like 3C and 3A.
So for fuel scoop a 2C is adequate in the Hauler and the 2A far too expensive.

You can reduce the quality (resolution) of the YouTube video play back so it is still good to watch but uses far less data. On the bottom area of the video click on the cog settings icon and change the play back quality to 360p. It probably says Auto right now.
I can't describe it better than that right now, so try search for "how to change YouTube video playback quality" for better instructions.
