Drew Wagar's Thoughts

You know, I just wondered about that too, so I decided to go take a look.

Turns out this was complicated a bit because he seems to have removed his Elite blog posts, but from a quick search (took me five minutes or so), it looks like he posted that he's leaving in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2021. Maybe in 2018 too, but the only reference I found there was to a blog entry that was removed, so I can no longer check. In any case, the only year when he didn't post anything here on the forums was 2018, so that might not have been it.

@xzanfr You're going to need a bigger notepad.

Well, it would have been better if a scifi writer had found ED and now had started playing it, instead of leaving, wouldn't it? I'm sure you will survive him leaving, but I don't see a lot of new players rushing in. I'd like that.

I've written & published 30 scifi and fantasy novels, and I've dropped 3000 hours into Odyssey since it launched.

In fact, EDO is the reason I'm on 30 novels and not 34 right now.

It can only be down to jealousy why some people feel the need to constantly post negative comments about Drew.
He seems a likeable, eloquent fellow and from what I understand from the general comments he made a positive impact on the game until FDev apparently decided they no longer required his services or even give him the least bit of recognition in terms of the lore and narrative. If I had to find something negative to say about him, I guess I would be questioning why he wears a hat indoors.

That one is obvious ;)

He has fans, naturally, I'm not one of them, but have read a few of his comments and watched some of his youtube content, even understand that he did some 'stuff' for ED before I started playing it. Those who have been here from the beginning may feel his contribution to the development of the game was pivotal (including some on one of the discord channels I frequent) because they 'were there', latecomers like me were not 'living those times' so whatever he did is just history, the game I play today is the one I bought, not the dreams & 'promises' of 2013, so I have no predisposition to whatever direction the game is going, just what it is, for me, today.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones as I didn't buy a dream, just another version of the game I enjoyed immensely in 1984 on the BBC "B".

Drew wrote two books on E: D lore, had at least one in-game event sponsored by the devs, and (although memory may be faulty here) also came up with the idea of using one Kickstarter to fund another (the writer's pack at £4500), which helped the game get made in the first place. He's been a major figure in E: D lore generation for almost a decade, because of his earlier work with previous Elite-ish games.

Oh, boi, that thread.

If a big fan like Drew walks away, I can confirm Doom 👌

I do share his sentiments though. I play/ed* this game because of space ships and Oddysey brings nothing new in that regards. More over the new stuff pushes the game in different direction.
Legs, legs, everywhere!

*I semi-quited ED because of non-space game related to massacre demon hordes.

I'm confused perhaps understandably but when they added legs content to ED did they remove the space part?

I get that some don't like Odyssey which is absolutely their right but you can still enjoy the parts of the game you love.
No, the space part was not removed. IMO, the new terribad UI and lighting is making it less appealing but it is definitely there.

Unfortunately, the content drought for space ships continues and I do not see how this will change in the next couple of years. Ze legs needs a lot of fixing, no time for ship/space development.

I didn't say or imply that Drew was the only lore writer, nor even the most important one, just that he was a "major figure". Which he was. Allen Stroud's work and Drew's were required reading back in the day. As indeed were Michael Brooks, and a couple of others.

It's all pretty irrelevant now really, as Frontier have abandoned all pretence at having 'lore' incorporated into their Fortnite-From-Wish that they've turned Elite into. 🤷‍♀️

I'd have paid the price of the DLC for the station interiors, Apex, the new planet tech, the exobiology, being able to get out and walk around on deserted, unexplored planets, and the graphical updates to ship combat.

Everything else was a massive bonus.

And yep, some weeks I'm almost exclusively in my ship, and then I decide to disembark and go and Rambo some settlement. Or stealth it. Or just take Apex taxis from one pickup to another, discovering new vistas and ground bases.

For my own personal situation, i can't enjoy the parts of the space game i enjoy because they're broken, have been for years, and presumably aren't getting resources because of efforts like Odyssey. This includes:
  • thargoid tissue sampling broken.
  • smuggling broken
  • megaship looting broken (again)
  • following low wakes to poi broken

And that's without going near the lack of things like military career paths a-la FE2/FFE, but that's not broken, just absent.

Exactly! Of couse space legs are in the spirit of Elite Dangerous because how you explore the Stellar Forge is entirely up to you and if it's about the transport why didn't Drew quit when the SRV was introduced? Or SLF's? Legs is only another mode of locomotrion just the same as ships are.

My guess is his nose got out of joint because FD understandably want to cater to all - and younger - demographics, not just those in the older camp (of which I'm one) and likely have put in game tools development above Drew's immediate lore wishlist.

A case in point would be Jaques. Yes he was originally a barman in lore but he also runs his own station now, his voice is clearly audible in the docking bay. Evolving this promotion, as character development, into lore once Odyssey dropped didn't seem to factor in Drew's thinking though. The fact Frontier hadn''t designed a bespoke bar character avatar for him is not at all surprising though, or even a slight against Drew but it was one of his talking points .. about how his vision of ED is apparently derailed. Which it aint . handcrafting that kind of detail would be phase 2 when Odyssey is undeniably still in phase 1, even if we did stand still.

I had to switch from EDO to EDH last night because I wanted to go mining, and in EDO all raw mats spawn inside the asteroid.

It also reminded me how much better Horizons looks and plays (120fps locked at Ultra/2k) - even my paintjobs look as advertised (y)

I will say though that while I don't give a toss he's leaving again I feel I'm entitled to be amused by it.
I am not sure if feeling amused by it makes much sense if you in general are supportive of the game. It has become clear that there is a portion of the users playing ED who do relate to Drew's contributions, and as a result feel that it is a loss to them, in their experience of playing the game, when he decides to turn his back on the game. To me this is in the same mold as Dr. Kay leaving - I could say it doesn't matter, someone will take over her duties. But you just feel that it might not be the case, or at least not with equivalent output. And it is a token of dissatisfaction with ED current development, not completely unfamiliar, is it. Sure, it doesn't affect my game play tonight, so to speak, but it casts a further shadow over my own motivation to carry own.

'Announcing' he is leaving' will effect no-one. Claiming that this is somehow significant is amusing.

Well, no-one is incorrect. It will at least affect me. Perhaps not only me. As to the significance - see my comment above.

One thing he said rang loudly with me, that Odyssey, as an fps, is not in the spirit of Elite Dangerous.
Well, this is the part where I am not sure I would go as far as he & some other do. I do think that space legs have something to add to the Elite universe - it is just that other parts nearer to the core experience are still missing, need to be added or fleshed out, before space legs should have been tackled. But in the grander scheme of things it is great to be able to leave your ship, move around and experience the world/universe more like you and I would actually, if we were truly captain of a space ship. But it has come premature, into a largely dead world, and it would have made much more sense to first tackle the atmospheric & inhabited planets (and by that I don't mean the same dead rocks with a shade of blue or red above the horizon). There are tons of tricks they could have used to make sense in the game (too hard to create entire inhabited planets ? Invent restricted fly-in zones with limited freedom, and force shields or else making it impossible to roam the entire planet - but do something to make it convincing.

Imho space legs was the wrong choice in terms of priority, not in terms of game play element.

This is why I would have expected Drew to say that he will withdraw for the time being, and once in a while check if it makes sense for him to come back. He chose to be more dramatic. I guess that is due to him being a writer ? But as pointed out by others, his disappointment about the state of the game must be so much bigger than e.g. mine, given the participation he had in it for the past 9 years - and still he had no power to right the ship.

An yet they have just developed megaships interiors, an have hinted they are coming for Carriers. I can only presume they will arrive for generation ships will come at some point.

An given that they appear to be completing long gestating projects, like the new SRV, files of which have been around for at least a year in the game, I'm guessing at least a couple of the hinted ships that have been found in the game files will be coming in on of the future updates.
