Sorry, but, no.

For the hard of thinking again... he explicitly used the words "You will be able to walk around inside your ship". Quoted verbatim. This is not the same as "stuff we'd like to do", but a specific, deliberate promise about a specific thing... as you say, to get people to part with money during the Kickstarter.

Frontier have of course said "We would like to do this..." at various points, most notably in the DDF, but this is not that... no matter how much revisionism you try and apply here. It's all there, literally from the horse's mouth.
No Juniper, that's YOU assuming it's a hard promise.
EDIT let me clarify here .... I don't ever believe something will be in Elite Dangerous until I see the CMs specifically say it's going to be in the game and here's the date/update when it'll happen.

Until then it's always "things we'd like to do" no matter the wording used.

But now they're saying it will never happen.

That's the misunderstanding I think.

All we heard was Arthur talking about it not being on the current roadmap and a definite no for being part of Odyssey. Arthur is a CM first of all and he was only decribing the current thinking of the dev team in expanding gameplay while also adding the ship interiors. It's not hard to see that adding both (gameplay and interiors) adds more tangible value to the game and that adding gameplay in general could be argued to be the higher priority.

The community says different? That's fine and who knows if Arthur wasn't even just testing the water .. the best chance for it then is a megathread describing the intricacies of how great the gameplay could be on interiors. Then, when adding gameplay / content it's obvious where the dev team should be looking to add it.

When someone says something to me using the words "I will" rather than "I might" or "I would like to" then yes, I take that as a firm promise... or people's word means nothing. Now I can certainly accept the latter with regards to David Braben, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that he made that promise.

"I will fix the bathroom light." vs "The bathroom light ought to be replaced" are two distinct and different intents.

I think Star Citizen will be released before we ever see ship interiors in Elite: Dangerous. That's how unlikely it is.

I might be wrong, maybe you've seen them say for definite ship interiors will NEVER happen, and while yes it seems ever increasingly unlikely, as far as I am aware, Frontier only ever say "no plas to at the moment" when asked about ship interiors.

Arthur Tolmie was on a Q&A video a few weeks after Odyssey was 'released', where he shut down any talk of ship interiors by telling us that we didn't really want them, and that the entire dev team were not interested or planning to ever do them, because they couldn't imagine how it would fit into their "gameplay loops". I forget the exact words he used, but you can search out the video on youtube if you like... it caused quite a consternation at the time, and many E: D youtubers covered it.

So to use your bathroom analogy ...
When someone says they'll fix the bathroom light, you assume it's been fixed instead of thinking that at that moment them saying "I will fix the bathroom light" is them declaring that fixing the bathroom light is something they want to do, but then they get a phone call, have to go out, are out for several hours, come back and have forgotten about the bathroom and didn't buy any bulbs while they were out and now they have no money and no time because they have to go out again ....

Just because someone says they'll fix the bathroom light, doesn't mean they will, it only means that at that moment, they would like to.

Actually ... I've decided I don't care what you think, feel free to carry on thinking Frontier promised ... you'll be wrong, but I've gone past the point of caring that you're wrong.

Your guess good as mine (and mine good as yours) though if you wanted a splash headline, to try to reverse the trouble caused by Odyssey framerates, "Ship Interiors : This December!" might just do that? And powder is usually best kept dry. Aces, up your sleeve.

It's high priest elluminati level stuff though, something us pilots can only guess about.

Ah yes, Arthur's "You think you do, but you don't" moment ... look how that worked out for Blizzard.

I must have been dreaming then.

You realize that ship interiors, among many other possible content post release outlined back then, was an expression of intent (not a promise) which was always based to start with on commercial viability of the franchise and sole FDEV discretion, and to be charged for separately only once released as DLC.

Many of those original plans and intentions (ship interiors is but one) have already come to pass by the way. From Newsletter 29 where FDEV outlined what they intended to do wrt future content DLCs after initial release:

For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):
  • Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports (Note: EDO on the other hand offers combat in interiors of settlements and on all planetary surfaces though)
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
  • Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players
  • Green is delivered: With EDH, EDO and Fleet Carriers. Although first person combat happens rather outside star ports not inside.
  • Red is not delivered yet: no ship interiors indeed yet.
  • Orange is partially delivered: EDO´s thin atmospheres, updated planetary surfaces and new biologicals. Not yet delivered things like thicker atmospheres, liquid masses or prominent flora and fauna.
And no signs yet this is stopping. All in all not a bad delivery record on their original intents post base game release. 😋

I use that one all the time, but I'm still held to that promise... because I said I'd do it... usually reminded about it at least every six months. ;)

And I think that's fair enough. You make a promise, you should follow through on it. If you don't, you're basically saying you're a liar. The timescales are less important.

Much like the perpetual alpha status of that other game, it ain't gonna happen. Sorry. 🤷‍♀️
