Drew Wagar's Thoughts

I'm always a bit conflicted on the "things Frontier said they'd include in pre-1.0 statements" thing.

On the one hand, certainly anyone who bought the game then expecting those to be added will understandably feel upset now that it's not there and not going to arrive in the next five years either, or possibly ever.

On the other hand, some of their early ideas were terrible and/or would require unpicking existing game mechanics in a highly unpopular way and/or were clearly things they came up with before they'd worked through the implications of "multiplayer" in "multiplayer Elite".

On its own, given the overall sums involved, yes. It's a drop in the ocean.

But multiply that by 20 to 30 backers pledging the same amount or much (much) higher each, and it becomes something more than a 'rounding error'. ;)

Remember you could pledge up to £5000 in the Kickstarter.
Five grand??? What did you get for that in return? Or was that more seen as a philantropic donation of sorts? Crikey.

The kickstarter apparently gave the game itself to backers for as little as £30 - any amount greater than that had an enticement attached.

This one:

Pledge £750 or more

Have a planet named* after you

Is rather a lot of pennies... But I've been playing in a system named Juniper (in the Colonia nebula) recently, is this coincidence? The Planetary outpost named Marigold is very nice also!

One person (Liqua) got to name the Founder's world.

The others I think got a dinner date with David Braben.

Or yes, philanthropic.
I mean, that other space game has raised the bar in terms of what you can spend on a 'game' significantly already (and from watching one of OA's videos there's another scam I mean project incoming that offers eye-wateringly high opportunities to burn money) but wow. Hope they thought it was worth it. Small second hand car or naming a station in a pooter game... tough one.

1.5 million from backers, 6.5 million from FD IIRC.

Even if a hundred people refunded, it would have been insignificant.

True enough... I should have added a few extra words for clarity... It is simply that clarity is not a prerequisite in making accusations or claims, so my post was reflecting the current trend of containing sufficient information to be inflammatory and accusing, but lacking in the content required to be entirely accurate.

I appreciate you honouring forum convention.

Praise Brebus.

It is absolutely coincidence - but that's fascinating to know. Nothing to do with me, and I'm positive it's random. Cool though.

My planet is in the Asphodel system (was Imperial last time I looked), along with the station named after my late Dad, and even a moon that I didn't ask for but was very glad to receive.

I like Michael Brookes. He is a good guy.

You got to name a system IIRC and some other stuff.
"And all of the above"

Hehehe. "you can have dinner with me, 5 grand".

Confident.

Also, I really dislike the notion of naming systems (though I don't mind ShinDez as such) and stations, there are some truly awful ones out there, some in engineer systems which really take me out of the game. Same goes for player faction names as well. But money talks I guess and is not reflective of one's imagination.
