Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Note, not a real quote! This was a series of images made by goons.

Ha ha, this is gold.

Another classic i heard a few times is that yes progress has been slow so far but soon "server meshing" and loads of other techno jargon behind-the-scenes wizrdry means suddenly they will be knocking out systems like nobody's business soon. Starting this year apparently.

Like, what are these people actually smoking?

This is also deeply suspect. Whenever i read about "intangible assets", it makes me think of Narcos....

Yeah, we had this discussion not long ago, but as a newbie to the thread we'll let you off ;)

Skeptics say: paying dividends without releasing a product? That's a bit of cheek ain't it?

Faithful say: Its fine, you don't understand business development, you're just a hater!

Oh, and they also paid Calder 5 million of his investment back, and as far as we can tell, with no reduction in the number of his shares. That is, they didn't buy his shares back, they just gave Calder 5 million that backers paid towards the development of the game.

They made 88 million in 2020. All but 10 of which was from "pledges" (rest from subscriptions and "other" sources).

About 5% of pledge money didn't go towards development, it went in Calder's pocket.

As a crowd funded project, money pledged goes directly to the game's development.

Should actually be:

As a crowd funded project, money pledged goes directly to the game's development... after some has been siphoned off to pay dividends to shareholders and pay off our investors.

So basically their legal department allready says it is released game, not an "early" alpha, like our LittleAnt says. So why not review it with same standards as other released games?
I suspect the actual terminology CIG would be trying to go for if pressed is "Early Access" release:

https://massivelyop.com/2021/10/17/...-paid-dividends-to-investors-as-of-last-year/

Star Citizen is a community-funded online video game project which was launched in early development in 2012 and moved into (playable Alpha) Early Access in 2016. Since then, regular patches, for several years now issued quarterly, have improved, and continue to consistently expand and improve the game’s playable environments and functionality.”

Even though many a backer swore that SC would never be released as Early Access like so many other half arsed projects etc etc. that CIG should take all the time in the world and whatever it took to release when ready and not a single minute earlier, etc etc.

....

"Your company must not pay out more in dividends than its available profits from current and previous financial years."
"Must not" easily (and falsely) translates to "muss nicht" which in turn means "need not" in Englischens. Maybe Ortlieb thinks it is not so strict. In any case - you rout it through enbough foreign subsidiaries and what are they gonna do?

The faithful have been saying some variation of that for years now. All that changes is what is being waited upon before things really speed up.

Indeed. That's the funny thing. Legally CIG treat it like a released product. They often market it like a released product. But the moment there is criticism, its right back behind the "ITS ALPHA" shield of ultimate defense.

The faithful have learned this habit at daddy Roberts' knee.

And i'm hoping sooner rather than later the gaming press will grow some eggs and start reviewing SC like a released product instead of being scared off by the death threat wielding crazed backers.

You know "catharsis"? Many imagine it like a sudden outburst. Maybe of orgasmic magnitude. Such is bound to be happening with the arrival of the Redeemer Tech. Religious cults have similar mechanics. Or imagine constipated patient. Then imagine the relief when things get moving again. Such is the stuff that redeemer tech is made of.

CIG consider the money gained from game, ship, UEC, cosmetics, subscriptions, etc as revenue from product sales (not pledges). Chris' December 2020 chairman letter has him stating revenue (and paying accounts) many times; pledges none.

Thanks to the sales revenue they make a profit (or loss), following which they've paid out dividends and returns on investment.
You can't pay dividends on revenue. Only on profits. I mean you can, but it is illegal.

Chris thinks its released.

Remember when he was interviewed by Gamestar.de in 2017 was it?

When asked about a 1.0 release, Chris said something along the lines of: what do you mean 1.0? We have 3.0 coming out soon!
Gamestar lost any credibility back then. They suffered already with the shift to online publishing. But subscribing to the shilling like that killed them off entirely for me.
