Clearly, that other company just doesn't understand games development.Look, it is clear now. If you spend four or five times more on your tech demo than another company has on multiple iterations of a product they took responsibility for, you are doing it right.
Basically difference comes from what kind of approach you have. Do you plan your product with realistic expectations? Basically trying to do things that are possible with current technology or near future, and if some feature seems to be very difficult or outright impossible you ditch it, and don't continue to throw money and resources for that. Plus you decide once what you are going to do, and don't change plans suddenly. That's one way to do things. That produces real released games.Look, it is clear now. Product released, however, no atmospheric landings, no spacelegs, no ship or station interiors, no EVA, no ship boarding. Charged $40 for this expansion to the Base ED.Ok, let´s compare alphas!
ED original alpha/beta lasted around a year roughly. And the game had a budget for development of 8£ million which according to Braben grew quite a lot. Say double that to be on the safe side, so 16£ million. It delivered a released product within 2-3 years.
EDH alpha lasted a few months, around 2-3 years overall development if we count all the individual expansions until 2.4. Overall cost probably not too dissimilar to the base game. Product released.
A released product that was initially as stable or even less stable than the Star Citizen Alpha. And even then they spent close to 3 years on an expansion that added tenuous atmospheres, settlements, on foot combat, space taxis, and additional engineering materials. The launch was a commercial failure, 3 years and who knows how many millions wasted.EDO alpha lasted around a month (2-3 years pre alpha or concept internally possibly?) and ended up with a released product.
Subnautica is a basic survival game with a cool underwater world. Extremely different kind of game.Cost ball park probably comparable or in the same order of magnitude to the base game.
Subnautica alpha lasted 1 year until it launched in Early Access end of 2014. Then fully released in 2018 for a total of 13$ million.
Pillars of Eternity is a top down RPG game.Pillars of Eternity had a development time of around 3 years and 4$ million, then fully released the game.
It is even worse - it still does not have a magic system. Or sexy necromancers.Product released, however, no atmospheric landings, no spacelegs, no ship or station interiors, no EVA, no ship boarding. Charged $40 for this expansion to the Base ED.
Initially. Just happens that Fdev patches it rather agressively, if it was done SC way it would still be about same mess as it was when it was released. Nowadays it is mostly OK product, still has some rough edges, but it is not one big bugfest waiting to kill your character with creative ways.A released product that was initially as stable or even less stable than the Star Citizen Alpha. If it was done the SC way it wouldn't have launched in the first place in this state. But even if it was initially a failure, it still very much is. Still sitting at Mostly Negative on Steam. Recent reviews are mixed yes, but the big picture hasn't changed.Initially. For me, Odyssey has also CTD'ed twice, with a couple of disconnects. Haven't played Odyssey since Update 7. I have however played Horizons, where I have had a couple of disconnects aswell. All in all, Star Citizen is more stable for me than any version of Elite. I have not had a CTD in SC since 3.13, which came out beginning of last year. Many 30ks in 3,14, but absolutely none in 3.16.For me, Odyssey has CTD'ed exactly twice, and couple of bugs forced me to restart application. Have played it since release. One death due to me not understanding game mechanics. (When NPC's tell you to stop for scanning better do it instantly.)
Yeah if it was done SC way it would still be an Alpha at 2031. And still nearly as bad state as it was in spring 2021. And they would sell G5 engineered ships for real money. You cannot compare a released and polished game to an Alpha

Better idea how to fund it?On the other side, selling game packages for $40k
Nobody said it's finished.no release in sight, missing many fundamental gameplay loops, 10 years in development, close to half a billion spent, selling ships for which no gameplay loops exist, and the list goes on and on, and you're defending this like its somehow better than what others have done.
Bon voyageYou know, this is just ridiculous and i cannot believe you are sincere. Either that or you are just suffering from a severe case of Robertitis.
You can join LA on my block list because reading this drivel is destroying my brain cells.
playableIs the not-at-all-an-exercise-in-narcissism-website-named-after-the-company's-co-founder which claims SC to be a "playable now" game not misleading?
Should there be asterisks on the "playable* now*" line? Playable*: for certain loose definitions of playable. Now*: may or may not be now or sometime in future in the perpetual-alpha status game. What is time anyway.
Ah, so you're saying CIG is guilty of false advertising. I completely agree.playable
/ˈpleɪəb(ə)l/
adjective
- able to be used or played.
"the game will be playable over the internet"
