Crazy thought (fdev?)

so its kinda clear that the xeno war is about to take a step up I think. So fun crazy thought...
players being aloud to port to run a thargoid ship, but with no real gain, and only in open play? No way to ID players from NPC players maybe. Just seems like a good way to get more peeps in open.

Anyway just an idea thought it might make a fun discussion.

I think the next major escalation level will be Thargoid on foot combat.
And many "ships in system xy" escalation steps before that.
That's too soon I think, but we will start seeing more aggression soon if I'm reading these coffee grounds correctly ;) . At any rate, this idea would give peeps a valid reason to pvp without ganking etc. There would need to be certain rules of course. Such as, no parties/wings. Limit the number of players proportionally to the number of players active in open. There would also be the obvious problem of players letting their buds blow them up for xp to solve. For this, I'd think death for the Thargoid would remove the player from the thargoid ranks and place them back in que, and the player cant choose where they spawn. Jump range limited to 15 Lyrs. Also, players running a Thargoid would be on a kill timer, so if you don't have a kill in say 30 minutes, your booted back and have to rejoin the que. If you score a kill the timer might reset, or maybe your put at the head of the que allowing you to instantly respawn when your timer is up.
In contrast, while other (non Thargoid) players wont be able to identify a player Thargoid from npc's, The payout would be higher... just off the hip say double that of an NPC. Also Player Thargoid ships would have lower health than an npc.
Note that a player would que up for this in much the same way you search for a cqc match while in game. The player would be required to be in open.

I dunno if creating an entire gameplay loop for one event is really the best idea, and I don't think offering PvP is going to get more people into Open; most people who play solo specifically do not want PvP.

But, if the core of what you're hoping for here is "I wanna fly a Thargoid Interceptor", there's a tinfoil hat shred of hope with that one. Story spoiler: Azimuth Biochemicals was revealed to be trying to find a way for humans to interface with and fly Thargoid scouts. So, there is a non-zero chance that we could see human-controlled Thargoid craft at the end of the Azimuth Saga or at some point later. And if that happens? There is a fair chance we could see player-available Thargoid ships. Please keep in mind that that's 100% an unverified personal theory, and I could be guessing totally wrong.

While I understand the argument, this would give players a path to experience PVP with no real loss. No rebuy, no penalty, just fun and a taste of pvp. I don't think (all) players hide in solo to avoid pvp so much as the loss associated with it. Lost cargo, lost rebuy.. lost efforts etc. I think you make a valid point, though.

lol, sure. If it gets more peeps into open. I mean its not something you could do full time (read above), but its gives players a chance to experience PVP without the costs related to learning the skill.

Which entirely ignores the point of me referring to the other thread of over 200 pages of discussion and explanation from people who play in solo of why they actually play in Solo and not Open, and not a single one of them suggested they would swap to Open if they could fly as a Thargoid...nope not mentioned once! People who want to play PvP already play PvP, playing as a thargoid isn't going to change that and you aren't going to get extra players in Open, just some people who currently PvP will try out the Thargoid ships, people who don't play PvP and play solo to avoid unwanted PvP play won't suddenly start playing pvP and play in Open because they have the option of another ship type to fly.

Suggest to any mod reading this thread be merged with the other thread because it's essentially just another Open versus Solo thread.

People who play in Solo play there because the don't want to play PvP or interact with other players, and that's it!

wow lol, ok. So all the opinioned based prostration aside, its obvious you didn't even read all 1 pages of this thread. What's more this was ment to be a friendly conversation about a thought, that's all. Absolutism is also kind of a poor stance, but that's another discussion.
Simply put if you don't like it then maybe just stick with that instead of jumping to a fanatic raving please?

Creating voluntary pvp related to the Thargoid plot line is an excellent idea imo.

Part of the problem though, is that if you put a human in a thargoid interceptor, they would absolutely devastate any other human ship, especially AXI veterans. Unless you also make anyone under 20% invisible, and even then, AX combat relies on certain rhythms and behaviours.

Ya, I agree. I think you would have to limit the player to scouts maybe? or severely handicap the Thargoid ship in some way. Perhaps a ranking system like cqc but with ridiculous level barriers? Balanced play would definitely be a challenge.
