Console Update

Um, seriously? Do you really think that Frontier uses terms like "family" and "community" without any intention of creating a personal relationship with customers? Given how they've been led to believe that they could expect a great future experience with Odyssey, once the bugs were ironed out, the response from console players is perfectly understandable to anyone who isn't pompous, heartless or both.
I think there's a healthy limit to the closeness and intensity of the relationship, would you agree?

Yeah i play mostly with Xbox 360 Controller on PC but i have some keybinds.
However its not really a surprice they drop developement for Consoles. Look in the past with Macs. This was a way to get more income, but as soon the effort is higher then the income thouse versions get dropped.
Anyway if i look at EDO there are still a lot things to do. Horizons runs so much better with less bugs.
Take alone the darker graphics, delay in loading graphics and sounds when you enter. just the ones you see i dont want to start on other stuff like forgotten Keybinds, modifications on GUI and so on.
Odyssey is still in a very bad shape, yes you can play with it but Horizons plays much better for the space only part.
It has also nothing to do with the hardware its the code itself. Better hardware however performs a little bit better then on less good hardware and i guess thats the main reason for this decition. The EDO Code runs so bad on consoles, they just cant sell it or face a huge storm and refunds again.
I got Edo with LEP but i would be disappointed when i had bought it for 30-50€ and i still wonder why its still in such a bad shape.
Yeah, I agree on the darker graphics. I hope they warm up EDO a bit. I feel like I’m in a Tim Burton movie.

I'm not even thinking of rebooting my PC Cmdr to buy Odyssey. I wouldn't waste any more of my money Frontier......
This may trigger some people possibly and is a bit of a rant, but you know what, I'm almost envying console players at least they've been given a great opportunity to wane themselves off this game - I keep playing EDO mostly out of habit at this point out of a futile hope that things will improve and better content added while existing content gets a do-over, and in my mind playing it seems more enjoyable than it usually turns out in reality if that makes sense.

Been playing for the last 4 hours or so, maybe 1 of those was actual, undiluted fun. The rest just tedium and wasting my time with very little to show for in the end (been particularly unlucky today with RNG).

EDO premium early-access has been the last time I gave Frontier any money, so I've been pretty good throughout the last year at least.

We're quite close to agreement. I think there's more to come in terms of optimization but if it's of a more fundamental nature, not having the pressure for a console release would give them the time to work it out. We will see. As for PC upgrades, tis the nature of the beast.
That's one way to see it, of course, but I'm more pessimistic about it - not having to worry about getting the code to perform at least adequately on consoles means they could just leave it as it is now and get away with it. The only caveat is the merging of Horizons into the Odyssey client, that might ruffle some feathers if they don't further optimise it.

As for upgrading one's hardware for Odyssey, I would suggest to anyone who considers this (particularly in the current market) to think twice, or thrice, again. It's not the hardware, it's the game. Still.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Sorry dude.....

As of last week I no longer trust any official notification from your game studio as holding a grain of truth.

Your OP is just this week's excuse for betraying the player base.

Next week it will be something else.

I'm sure many console players have vast game assets and materials with hundreds if not thousands of hours invested in the game.

With no means of transferring these assets from those player consoles to PC, they not only lost their investment in the cost of the game, they lost the hours invested, the tags gained, and all ARX purchases.

I think it would be very generous of Frontier to offer some bit of compensation for those so affected, to include a complementary copy of the game for PC, as well as any ARX assets associated with the console account.

Although I don't own a console, I would be extremely upset having lost both the monetary cost, as well as the personal investment in game time.
Yup, that pretty much sums it up. 🙂eye twitch

What is the mechanism pls ?

There is a mechanism for doing a one-time transfer of your in-game money from one account/platform to another.
You can find that somewhere under the support page of the Frontier site.

That's just the money though.
If you make that change from platform to another, you're in the same boat all us console players find ourselves in right now;

Having to start everything (but the money) over from scratch.
All the reputation, engineering, ranks, influence...
All your ships, modules, discoveries...
Gone.

For me just the money doesn't cut it.

What has to do with my entry date? I think there's something missing inside you. You don't need to join to read things, just to post. And only now with the cancellation of the console that I decided to express myself. What does this have to do with a troll account? Is time relevant now? If that were the case, we would all be bowing to the turtles haha I thought content and vision were important.

Limited and dishonest thinking.
Well.... since you are essentially telling console players to get a PC and play SC on an Elite Dangerous forum is for me a way of trolling. :)

I have played Elite since the BBC version that is how loyal I have been. But now forget it. I will never buy anything again from Frontier. You guys have been disloyal to me. If only you updated it for the PS5 then you could have made it work. I am very disappointed with the original creator. You made versions for the BBC, Spectrum, C64, Amiga and others but you can't be bothered to continue on consoles. Shame on you Braben, this shows laziness and total lack of respect towards the console community.
Played Elite since C64 and on Amiga. Weren't you mad that FFE didn't make it to the Amiga and was PC only, even after being advertised for the Amiga? Why now is it the end, when the last gen is heading for stage exit left?

Probably
I don't think anyone is happy with this news (even the share price has taken a minor hit since the announcement) but it was inevitable and hopefully Frontier will now have a solid foundation to build back from

I do think free transfers from console to PC should have been explored and announced along with this announcement though. Saying you're "looking into it" now is no use as you'll likely have no console players left to transfer if/when you set it up down the road (and I say that as a pc player)
I hate to assume, but that’s probably what they intended, honestly… means they don’t have to deal with it.

Haha... this is so true. I mean.... if the Amiga computer I have today (see signature) would've existed back then, it would have been the best platform for FFE. :)

This means then I need to buy a gaming pc. Last time I did this was for x3 Terran conflict by Egosoft and tbh it was bug ridden. Don't know if I can muster the enthusiasm of purchasing a gaming pc having purchased two xbox for me and my son to play. o7
I got my son a laptop a while back and he loves it, not just for games, there's a small group at school learning to make games in Unity that he's part of. There's so much more to be done with a PC than can be done with a console. Though he has a Switch too, and an Xbox One at his mom's. It could be a good opportunity, honestly.

For the information of Cmdrs who live in the UK (and possibly the EU by referred law):

Consumer Rights Act 2015 (UK)

36 Digital content to be as described

(1)Every contract to supply digital content is to be treated as including a term that the digital content will match any description of it given by the trader to the consumer.

(2)Where the consumer examines a trial version before the contract is made, it is not sufficient that the digital content matches (or is better than) the trial version if the digital content does not also match any description of it given by the trader to the consumer.

(3)Any information that is provided by the trader about the digital content that is information mentioned in paragraph (a), (j) or (k) of Schedule 1 or paragraph (a), (v) or (w) of Schedule 2 (main characteristics, functionality and compatibility) to the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 (SI 2013/3134) is to be treated as included as a term of the contract.

(4)A change to any of that information, made before entering into the contract or later, is not effective unless expressly agreed between the consumer and the trader.

(5)See section 42 for a consumer’s rights if the trader is in breach of a term that this section requires to be treated as included in a contract.

One definition: For "contract" read EULA.

Shame I'm not in an appropriate jurisdiction..............

I would advise against it - generally speaking and even more now.
It will transfer only the assets value in cash (no ranks, no unlocks, no materials, no progress of any kind) then it will delete the source account.

I hope they will come up with a more appropriate transfer (since they're dropping consoles) in the near future

Hmm had FFE on 486sx 25. Was not exactly fast game with it. Any Amiga of the day except high end A4000 and it would have been diashow...

Too bad the PC players don't care enough to petition for us. It'd be nice to see the PC community back up the console players for once in their lives. Maybe stage a protest. No one on the servers until a promise to help console players is made? Doubt it will ever happen.

I'm not sure how how saving FDev a few cents on bandwidth costs is supposed to be an effective protest. It sounds like one of those things were people were smashing stuff they'd already bought and posting free advertising of the product in the process...

Anyway, everyone is ultimately out for themselves. I've pointed out elsewhere why I think the halting of Odyssey development on consoles implies that Odyssey will likely never be up to snuff on PC. I also think FDev's treatment of the console segment of the player base is unsatisfactory, which sets a bad precedent. Both lower my already low expectations for my personal experience with the PC version of the game. So, I'll continue not buying ARX, but I was going to not buy ARX anyway.

Lots of first world problems here...

Any problems related to fundamental human necessities, or other existential threats faced by those lacking the privilege to indulge in luxuries like this game, would be completely off-topic.

But it's hard to say that this isn't just utter, top rubbish.
It's true, I am a PC only gamer and I never cared for console versions. This is because many games simply do not support crossplay and it just doesn't affect me in the slightest.
In Elite, this is also the case. If Frontier would have enabled corss play long ago, then this would be different. But as it stands now, there unfortunately is no incentive to speak up for a community I have never interacted with and most likely never will :(

Your reasonable recommendation will fall on deaf ears. If the 95 pages of posts in here are any indication, it's that console gamers (pick one or more of the following):
-Can't be bothered to buy one
-Are absolutely appalled at the prospect of spending money (the horror!)
-Are literally destitute and can barely afford to eat or survive
-Cannot possibly see any reason, any reason at all, that owning a PC has any value beyond playing ED. Certainly not web surfing, word processing, education, communication, work, etc...

But watch em happily shell out hundreds for the next gen console system!
