Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

It only seemed to grow at the highest possible altitude and, given most peaks were pointy, an example on one side of the point was all I could get on that peak.
I engineered my Artemis with Improved Jump Assist and Increased Sprint Duration to make those sorts of terrain easier to navigate. I leave the SRV behind once it gets too rugged to drive. Works pretty well, and it's actually kind of fun to jump from peak to peak, like some sort of rocket man :)

Let me know if building a group of vigilantes / special ops commanders whose goal is to fight against the expansion of factions that are not democratic or otherwise not supporting peoples rights to self-determination. This can include player democracies not behaving like democracies. It was an idea I had for my second commander that has been put on the back burner due to other game activities keeping me busy. The group will have no official squadron or faction and so will be undercover as much as the game allows and not have any territory to defend - which honestly gets boring after a while as player factions make agreements for peace with their neighbours which results in not much of anything interesting to do. What we need is a disruptive influence in the bubble to create conflict in which to experience our commander's story.
I could be interested in a loose alliance against usurpers, pretenders and the forces of outrageous expansionism. Although I do have a soft spot for Anarchies, not that they’re expansionists it seems.

I‘m not getting much time to play at the moment due to some real life unpleasantness but my main is Cmdr Zaxten and my Alt that may go this way is Cmdr Ikigai-Ren so feel free to send a friend invite if you fancy doing anything in the coming weeks/months - I’m afraid I can’t promise much more than a few hours here or there prior to that. Of course, no problem if not.

OK my "alt" commander that engages in this sort of activity remains anonymous as much as possible except with those he will work with. The idea is you conduct activities at any time that suits you but playing in open (so opponents have a chance to counter you) and we coordinate in some other forum such as private messages here or on Inara. Might go for a Discord if more members come on board.
My "alt" commander is covering more conventional faction support work in my main commanders absence as he (Quain) is on his way to Beagle Point and it will be at least a few weeks before he returns to the bubble via Colonia. Then he will buy a Fleet Carrier that can be used as a mobile base. There isn't really a lot that needs doing for the player faction I support, so would get back to opposing one particular faction that did manage to identify my "alt" account after a while if someone else was joining in. Perhaps when you have time for it, we'll try an in game rendezvous somewhere in the bubble if time zones allow - for role playing purposes and so you then know my "alt" commanders name. I tend to play 8am to 9am and 6pm to 6.45pm UK time Monday-Friday and at other random times that I might get available. If in game meting can't work I'll just send an in game friend request.

How wude!

Jumping back to the bubble in the carrier for a change of pace. Left it quite close to the jump initiation before running to my hangar. Didn't make it in time so I was "escorted" back to the command chair. Me! The bloody captain of the vessel! Escorted! How very dare you!? I'll have you all hung, drawn and quartered for this Insubordination!

Right... smear campaign plans then...

This little moon was almost airless, but there was a very thin atmosphere and a few Bacterium clinging to life on the surface.

Here I am playing "spot the Bacterium." It's in this picture, right in front of me.

I'm not sure why I persisted, but I did find 3 samples. They were worth a paltry 50k. I guess I wasn't doing it for the money :)

I met a lady on the station concourse who had got herself thrown out of a tourist spot for being drunk and rowdy. Out of spite she wanted me to steal their power regulator and ruin everyone's holiday. This suited my BGS aims so I agreed to make it happen.

This is my first pedestrian mission and so far I have been spotted trying to clone somebody's security clearance, shot at, run back to my ship and paid the fine. Twice.

Third time's the charm, right?

After another couple of days I finally made it the last ~600ly back to the bubble. Handed in my data, got allied with one faction on my list, and half way through friendly with another. Not bad for a short trip.

And then... headed to Shinrarta, because I wanted to know what an explorphin is like.

First impressions: good grief it runs cold. This screenshot is taken at ~48% heat, fuel scooping hard. For fast jumps, this might even be the champion, because it can just start charging the friendship drive while bouncing off the explosion zone, right as the destination is coming over the solar horizon, and it's fine. By far the quickest jump-jump time I've ever enjoyed.

I've kitted the Argent Seabird with some engineering, resulting in something above 60ly range (good enough), and 4A thrusters that work better than 5A by default. The dolphin chassis is full of small slots, which is absolutely ideal for this job; double SRV bay, an AFMU, plus a research limpet controller and 4t of cargo space to synthesise some limpets just in case I encounter some of those cool molluscs. Haven't had chance to really test her handling on thrusters, but she'll boost 450m/s and that's a good sign. It would be possible to have collector limpets and a mining laser, but I prefer a docking autopilot. I am never going to let myself be so short of materials that asteroid mining is required, and I absolutely will be drunk next time I get back from the black. I'd rather not crash while laden with exploration data. Plus the 750k worth of codex credits I forgot to hand in last landing...

Down sides: cockpit has zero visibility to the underside. No real surprise, because look at it. I don't even know if it's the top or bottom deck. Also, I didn't get any fancy opalescent paint jobs for a dolphin, so I'm just running the stock white for now... which is sad. This thing would look so good with a reflective makeover... but it is what it is.

Currently barrelling out of the bubble towards a small and commonly visited nebula, just to see what it feels like. Half way there in about 7 minutes feels pretty good.

(Side note, I feel like the captain's quarters in this are sooooo comfy vs most other ships...)

@Nekozji You swoop scoop like I do (y) Another ship which does that remarkably well is my Mamba (of all ships?!?). A lot of it has to do with an "efficient" PP, but my exploration Mamba swoop scoops way better than my hyper engineered paperplane AspX, and it finishes scooping half way "around" the star without breaking a sweat. As another curiosity: I'm building an ultra light Courier for combat, and even with an armored PP that ship boils. Funny thing is that in any other ship I've tried, once heat reaches 70%, the OH I have stuffed in the dashboard starts smoking. In the Courier, not until close to 100% heat, no smoke at 70. Strange ship

On another note, I was doing my regular messing around with settings in ED/VR to see if I could squeeze a few more fps out of my 3070 after recent updates. Then I started overclocking, and boy did I "win the silicone lottery". I'm able to get +260 on the GPU itself and +1200 on the memory (Afterburner) without any water or nitrogen. It seems to run rock steady in benchmarks and games. Most of all, it helped quite a lot in ED, where I try to get both resolution and fps, while running everything on ultra. Today I plan to involve some undervolting and see if I can find a sweet spot. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with yesterdays escapades.

Landed on a planet with four bios and I was determined to get them all. Little did I know...

The first two were easy bacteria and fonticulua. The third was very high in the mountains - osseus:

Getting three samples to fulfill diversity was horrible. My chassis was taking damage and I couldn't go very fast. At all. The view was nice though:

And then... then there was the fourth plant I needed. A fungoida. Now, I don't what possessed me at this point but before I went looking, I decided to go as hight as I could before the poor SRV begged for forgiveness. So, up I went. And up.

And, of course, there was the fourth bio. Just about as high as the mountain top itself:

Now getting three of that little puppy was very interesting indeed. It only seemed to grow at the highest possible altitude and, given most peaks were pointy, an example on one side of the point was all I could get on that peak. It took three peaks to get them all, all at an ear-bleedingly thin altitude. It was hell and not even on earth. Still, in the end, all three samples were tucked safely away in my sampler.

Getting back down was an adventure in itself and I'd never seen an SRV do moguls on a black run before, let alone be in one when it did :D

Back at the ship, I decided to take one last photo of where I'd been:

And that concludes my exobiological escapades for quite some time...
You've basically summarised two important aspects that define my exploration career in Odyssey.
  • I'll never use a Phantom ever again, it can't land anywhere.
  • I'll never do exobiology with my alt. Reaching Elite with my main was enough, until the mechanics are improved.
I will keep hiking in small ships, because it's beautiful, but my space hairdryer will be gathering dust, perhaps resting on the seat of the Phantom, somewhere in a hangar!

@Tyres O'Flaherty

This is still the nicest thread on the internet. Kudos to you for starting that.
Approaching four years too. Best read on the forum.
Thanks CMDRs!

But, really, all I did was ask a question - it's really down to all the wonderful contributions that have kept it going :)

And, of course, it sometimes turns into a "help" thread which is totes fandabbydoozey :D

I must apologise though: I keep changing my avatar! One day I'll find one I'll stick with, promise!
