Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The Goat game had more realistic physics than SC.
Oh and Starglider 2 (1988, Amiga) had space whales.
I loved starglider and starglider 2 on the amiga... and (sad geek alert) i still have the music on my amiga game themes music playlist ----- and yes i realise its technically cheating as it was a tape in the box. (I really like Dave Lowe / Uncle Art . (am sure anyone remotely interested in this topic will know he did the Frontier Elite 2 theme as well)

SaltEMike discusses combat logging in SC....

No worries, i'm sure that CIG can solve this with some magic tech. After all, everyone knows ED only has combat logging because its P2P whereas SC is client/server.
it is interesting about how they are chatting about the vocal minority of players who dont want to PvP whining about being blown up for lolz........ maybe this is true of the playerbase in SC - i dont know - but my understanding is in many MMOs the opposite is true.

History has typically shown in MMOs people don't care for PvP and just want to PvE.

New World backed off from its always on PvP due to immense negative feedback during early testing.

A number of MMOs tried to split the playerbases into PvE and PvP servers, with the PvP servers often quickly dying.

There are 2 ways of trying to deal with the two opposing groups.

1) The aforementioned split. The problem is, the number of people who generally want real PvP, real challenge, are often too few to support a separate server and those who just want to gank just leave if they can't get their gank on.

2) Game rules that limit/control when/where/how PvP can happen. So, in SC, the idea is there will be relative safe zones, like some stations, and there are punishments for those who kill without reason planned (and exist already), but PvEers don't care about what punishment PvPers get after killing them, they only care about their loss. And PvPers generally also don't care as long as they get to do what they want, they are prepared for the hit and accept it as the cost of doing business as it were. CIG claims they will achieve what so many before them have failed to achieve... but there again, that's CIG in a nutshell, claiming they will do things nobody else has done before, then usually just doing exactly the same as what has been done before.

There is the third option of course, do nothing. EvE is close to this, excepting Concord, but even that doesn't deter people always. Some games will full on PvP can flourish, but the market for it is pretty niche. If you have a damn good product, with the focus being on PvP, and the PvE is there more to support them PvP, then it can work. But that isn't the game CIG is making and there are many PvEer backers who just want to do their stuff without worrying about other players.

For the moment, SC is still in alpha, so they can all sit there thinking when the game is released, CIG will make it work how they want it to work. Everyone is free to live in their own fantasy land, and can even pull quotes from CIG to support their position, regardless of what their position is, hardcore PvPer or hardcore PvEers. There's a quote to support whatever you want to believe.

Its another reason CIG might want to shy off ever calling the game released, because the moment they do that, so many dreams will be ruined.

A 50 people universe isn't much of a universe.

And if there are 50 people on that server, with everyone in their own ship, all at the same location, it means everyone is flying solo, and nobody is anywhere else on the server. :p

Hah, also posted to /r/gaming. They are really trying to market the game hard.

To be honest, i'm kind of fine with that. The more people who actually try it out will get to see first hard the marketing and shill videos are not representative of the reality.

IME, not only is the opposite true in most MMOs, but the “asymmetrical PvP” crowd would inevitably be the true vocal minority, and a tiny one at that. Even in the MMOs explicitly designed to be “PvPers paradises” which I had tried in my youth. Of course, most of the latter inevitably failed because PvPers tend not to stick with any particular game in the long term, leaving behind the type of PvPer who prefers easy wins to generate salt, and PvP is best when it’s a fair fight.

About the only such PvP MMO I know of that managed to pass the test of time is EVE online. There’s probably others I’ve missed over the years, but I eventually came to realize that I’m far too much of a role-player to ever succeed in such an environment (which is frustrating even if I have a high tolerance for failure) and especially given how I feel that meta-gaming is borderline exploiting.

anecdotal evidence, gut feeling and +60% funding...
The funding itself is unclear. It has never been audited publicly by an independent third party so we do not really know what goes in that tracker, nor if it is accurate. We do not even know from where it comes; CIG has even decided to withdraw and hide the revenue origin info from their UK side of reports. CIG does not even show basic elements in their financial blog such as a balance sheet etc.

So we are back to your totally unbiased gut feeling I guess?

You know the state of the PU, and the roadmap, isn’t great when all Ant can bring himself to celebrate repeatedly is the funding tracker ;)

You’ve gotta be careful with these memes of yours Ant. They can come back to bite…

downfall of the skeptics >>> yes
The amount of skeptics will not regenerate by itself. It is only dismishing patch after patch.
And some people will critic any news about CIG right ?
They are rare now...

Almost a year since you first proclaimed the death of SC scepticism. I’d avoid looking at that latest /r/gaming thread if I was you ;)
