VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

VR performance is much improved since the recent updates. All we need now is for VR to be in the whole game.

yeah but that's a problem though, Cobra engine cant handle it on-foot performance tanks harder then a south african mine deposit atm... Frontier has to address that first before VR stands any cahnce

I've not seen any improvement in VR in any of the updates in EDO. Same poor framerate, same stuttering and hiccups. and moon/planetary visuals are just horrible. You simply can't gloss over how absolutely bad the visuals are. They looked much better in Horizons. There's no comparison.

What's wrong with you people? I can understand the want for better VR, and I even share that hope. Still necroing thread after thread is annoying.. Please start a new thread instead!
it depends on the forum rules... i know a lot of places give posters grief if they do NOT search for old threads on a topic and add to those thus keeping in 1 place.

it is a balancing act no doubt, and i doubt i get it right all the time, but generally i think it is better to ressurect an existing thread even if it is a little old, if it is exactly the topic you plan to discuss, rather than starting new.

kind of damned if you do, damned if you dont imo.

for the record, with my pretty high end rig (5800x RTX 3090FE) at launch ED:O in vr was a nausea fest for me. Now it is completely playable everywhere (that is not to say it runs well given i am kind of using a sledge hammer)..

but i have definitely seen an improvement on my machine.

it is saddening that at launch however it was possible to play the on foot stuff in VR in a round about sort of way*** and rather than improve it, or do nothing even and leave it alone, FD instead chose to block it. That makes no sense to me at all

*** I never tried it myself, i wish i had TBH.

visuals wise its subjective of course, there are wins and losses in both versions (which there shouldnt be.... ED:O at its worse should be on a par with ED:H and for the most part better given how much newer it is and how much increased the demands of it are......................
but for me, put it this way, i dont plan on going back to ED:H unless i have to..... and that is even if i am not doing on foot stuff (which i dont do very often)

"They LOOK much better in Horizons."

FTFY (present tense)

You saw what happened to the last one didn't you?
Yes someone started wailing about white knights and got the thread closed..

Still this is the second necro in a short period of time, wouldn't it be better to start a new thread instead of necroing large threads?

And much as I would like to see the issue attended to, I don't think whining about it is going to help much. As far as I know this is the last communication from FDev on the subject: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-update-on-vr-and-ship-interiors.554223/

VR and Elite Dangerous Odyssey

We understand that our VR players are keen to know more about how the transition and gameplay will work in Odyssey in VR. With that in mind, we would like to share our current plan for how that will work.
In Odyssey, players will be able to fly down to planets, fly through atmospheres and drive along planet surfaces in their SRVs - all while remaining in VR.

When disembarking your ship or SRV, players will be presented with a projected flat game screen in their VR headset in order to continue on foot. Players will of course be able to remove headsets if they so choose, but this will not be a requirement to continue your adventure.

There will be no requirement to boot between Horizons and Odyssey in order to continue your journey.
We understand that VR is a big part of Elite Dangerous and is a feature that holds a dedicated and passionate community. However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits. That said, we do hope that this implementation will allow our VR players the best possible transition between their VR experience and exploration on foot.

Note that it doesn't say that VR is canceled, it rather holds out some hope that it will be attended to when they have a good solution for on foot VR. Though considering present performance issues, it seems unlikely that they are putting any priority on VR at the moment..

Note that I didn't complain about necros until someone felt a need to necro a second thread..

indeed. i wasnt having a pop, i dont mind either way whether people post new or necro (i suppose i would lean to necros IF the subject is the same but i realise it isnt ideal either.

my point is tho, sometimes it is hard to know which is the expected etiquette depending on the board you are on.

truth is i have not looked at the forum rules for years, perhaps it is covered on there but i dont have time to look now as am meant to be working ;)

reopening old threads is one of those situational things that there is no blanket rule over what the right decision is. In some cases, it's going to make sense to create a new thread because the underpinnings of the topic have changed over time even if the topic is the same - so the thread would be confusing if continued. Other cases, there is no change so continuing it would make the most sense. And often this confusion on what to do is reinforced by the demand that players and mods make on users to "use the search button" and not create duplicate threads.

If there was a rule against necro threads, the devs would have set the forum to auto-close threads where no comments have been made in X number of days ...like reddit and such do.

It's more than two. The necromongers have been increasingly active lately.
