4.0 | Now Live

Could anyone tell us how big this update is in file size terms?

The ED launcher doesn’t seem to say and my completion time is steadily saying 6-8 hours 😭

But that is exactly how base game and horizons has always worked - same code, just some things are gated and hte launcher options are there for those. There is no reason the same can't be done for EDO and EDH4.0 - it is either laziness, slipshod approach or just can't be bothered.

Sorry but this sort of thing really annoys me.
Or market segmentation by feature set? Never heard of that? Successful companies do it rather than just giving everything away for free.

So are you saying 4.0-Horizons and the Horizons expansion are not part of the same package?

I've bought the Horizons expansion in the past, when it was still an expansion to the base game, so I suppose I should get access to anything that falls under the name of "Horizons".

Please clarify, I'm definitely failing to understand something here.
We no longer sell Horizons as a separate package. A while back it was rolled into the base game so that anyone who buys Elite Dangerous today automatically has the ability to land on planets and other things that were originally exclusive to the Horizons DLC. Therefore "Horizons" is now effectively synonymous with "base game".

4.0 Horizons or ("4.0 base game" if you will) is now being offered to players on PC who don't own Odyssey so they can try out that version of the codebase.

Help, I can't install Horizons 4.0 through the launcher, and Steam doesn't have it. I really want to play ... Is it possible to somehow install Horizons 4.0 without a launcher?

This release is a courtesy and free upgrade for non-Odyssey owners. They now get to try the 4.0 codebase with all the perks that contains as well as engage with future content and narrative updates at no additional cost where this wasn't possible before. Of course, we still hope they will upgrade to Odyssey for the full experience the game has to offer.
Yes pls Player, pay the ing 25 € / $ for the Game ... You pay much more for much lesser fun in RL ... iam more then 300h in Oddy ... 25$ / 300h = 0,083 $ per hour ... thats more then ok. Stop whining and buy the ...

Thats the point if you have oddy you cant play in Horizons 4.0 DOH!
As Bruce said, H4 is basically an "Odyssey Demo". The idea is if you like H4, spend a few bucks and upgrade to Odyssey. On sale the cost is cheaper than one month of a subscription-based MMO. If they don't like it, they'll go back to H3.8.

I honestly don't see the problem here. Bruce has confirmed one of my theories (and disproved my opposing theory) - Horizons 3.8 remains the de facto Horizons. H4 is kinda like shareware, you can try it, but if you want all the features, you've got to buy it. That seems fair to me. Frontier just has to be really careful with how they market both Horizons and the Odyssey DLC, because most games don't have DLC that separate the player base the way Odyssey does (buying an ESO DLC doesn't prevent me from playing with those who haven't).

That the point. Buy Ody or play old 3.8. Horizons 4.0 is sort of aggressive promotion of Ody.
The real issue is it puts a lot of pressure on multiplayer. The pool of players for multiplayer interaction on PC was already hit by the split of Odyssey and Horizons (as well as people leaving the game as a result of this and other issues associated with the launch). It's now to be further split. For people who enjoy multiplayer it feels like removing more reasons to play. I guess FDev may be calculating that the increase in players that move to Odyssey due to being able to test drive part of it, and in order to experience multiplayer, will be greater than the players that will lose interest.

I guess that is minor but loud part of players. I did "team play" ONCE during 4 years, can't say I liked it. Everything else I need, like guild-chat works without restrictions.
