Oh, dear. I love how they try and show off a bit of simple ray casting to determine whether to show the target reticule or not as somehow a clever and unique new feature.

You can tell that the target audience for these is decidedly non-technical. Anyone who's done even the simplest bit of 3D coding will be laughing their backsides off.

Wrong, they simulate actual signal processing as stated by a dev here. That clip doesn't cover the actual simulation behind it.

so how is this game doing? I heard rumors there will be a first person shooter demo out for backers to download soon?

I haven´t updated the launcher since half a year ago, it always loaded the complete game instead of incremental and that is pretty bad for a SSD.

The space combat was really fun though.
When FPS launches I´ll update and check out the status

So SC "blows your mind" with EVERY update but Elite is lacking in EVERY single category?

I suppose one can appreciate both games for what they are since they represent very different approaches to the genre.

Flight controls slowly getting better. Obviously, it's smaller incremental improvements, but the last update 9.2 was a step in the right direction, still a lot of points which have to be fixed though.

I wonder how much codebase you've written and worked with if you make such statements. They are showing the implementation of a simple feature so you don't have to know half their architecture to fully understand what's going on. I think if they give you some network code you'd have to think twice of what's going on. And so would I.
All of this is assuming they do have a complex platform in place. And since we don't know, we must assume they do so we don't look silly on a public forum.

And by the way, time-based raycasting against primitives is actually a very efficient way to check visibility. Tell me what other fancy approach would you use ?

How is it "wrong" when you yourself mention they don't show it in the clip?
The comment you replied to was about the specific video clip.

The original comment derived from the clip that target signature visibility relies only on ray casting. This is factually wrong as previously explained.

Probably several millions of lines of code in the last 30 years thank you very much.

IAnd by the way, time-based raycasting against primitives is actually a very efficient way to check visibility.

Which is exactly why it's used in pretty much every 3D game ever written. Thank you for proving my point.

Actually yes. Star Citizen is innovating. They are doing things no one else is and its truly amazing. What does Elite have that i cant do in Diaspora?
If i need a little nostalgia i play Elite. If i want something to rock my socks off i play Star Citizen

I agree, the difference is Elite is basically the original 1984 title in a "HD Gold Edition"
and Star Citizen is Wing Commander/Privateer wrapped up in ONE game plus extensive new features and new concepts no one has ever done before

care to mention some of these innovations that are "truly amazing" ?

Difference right now is the Rift implementation ... ED out a million miles in front. End of story. If SC sort it out then I'll agree to have my sock knocked off

Well said. I personally will enjoy both games based on their individual merits. I'll play ED whenever I want to kick-back and relax while venturing off into an endless universe, whereas SC gives me that very clan and PvP heavy experience, where I chat, train and team up with my clan mates on a daily basis to compete against other clans.

E.g. large (50-100 ships is the long term aim) player-controlled fleet-battles from a pilot's perspective where additionally crew actions and infantry combat take place inside the ship all in the same instance.
I.e., it is even planned that a ship can shoot a projectile and hit a crew member inside a hostile ship.

Concepts are easy to come up with.. pulling them off in a workable fashion on the other hand..

I back both sc and ed. and don't see any point in rubbishing either. two different company's two different games. will follow and play both as they progress.

Stealth Signatures
Crafting
Engine Tuning
Weapon overclocking
Ship Computer overclocking/upgrading/customizing
Ship to Ship Boarding
Capturing and stealing ships
Capturing and owning space stations/ mining stations / factory nodes / capital ships (all of which are persistent in universe and must be guarded 24/7 to insure ownership)
Multi-Crew ships
EVA Reapir
Medical ships
Perma-death

Thats just to name a handfull

Why did you buy Elite then?
Because i played the original

So AC gameplay rocks your socks off? Really?
Yes Really
When i grew up we had Atari 2600. I mean seriously what does it take you kids to have your minds blown now-a-days?
