07 Commanders, Signing Off

Obviously you don't understand Steamcharts. Would you like to know more?
So last year around this time, when Galnet was dead and there were no community goals, Steam registered 15,000 active players, but now, just after the release of a major DLC that effectively split ED into two separate games, the total number is 5,000. Well yeah, that can only be read as a smashing success story. Why anyone would suggest otherwise is beyond me.

I'm beginning to wonder if leaving threads are being posted just to put a certain set of commanders on a piece of string.
Is it the players (you know, folk who are actually playing the game) who enjoy the game that you are mentioning?

The happy players also drag the 'trolls' out to join in too, so everyone benefits from participating in such joyous events!

What the game needs right now are meaningful EVA gameplay / encounters using ship interiors and VR support.
No, it's never needed ship interiors, nor did Elite 1, 2 or 3.

Have you told the rest of your player-group/squadron you're leaving? Presumably you did engage in the most rewarding element of a sandbox simulation - the community and activities that players made together in the shared universe?

If not, and you're just whinging at something the game isn't, not what it is, don't let the door hit you on the bum on the way out.

I've decomissioned my carrier and sold most of my ships. Been playing since 2014 and had grown tired of failed promises and consistent mediocre feature implementations. I don't even know where this game is headed anymore as there is no clear roadmap on what to expect.

Fixing bugs and performance will not save this game if all there is are grinding for credits and mats.
What "saved" Elite for me (specifically Horizons) was letting go of this dream that ED would someday be this grand, overarching, internally-consistent interconnected game with an overall purpose or destiny. One day it hit me - Elite is like those giant buffets that has 100 different unrelated dishes, most of them cold or under-cooked. However, there are a couple of the dishes I really like that keep me coming back*. I already have all ships I want engineered to the specs I want, so when I play, I basically play strictly for fun, which for me is PvE combat defending installations.

I personally find installation combat to be the best PvE in the game. Most installations are wonderful setting with a specific goal (protect the installation, unless you side with the raiders). Having the installation itself being the focal point gives a sense of scale to the combat theater that you don't get in a CZ. Also, the NPCs are not boring bullet sponges like they are in a CZ. In other words, installation defense is what I always thought a CZ should be. I do these in a modestly engineered shieldless Cobra, so there's challenging gameplay to be had (something lost if I were to go in with a G5 Corvette or FDL).

My point is, I play a very specific sliver of Elite these days (when I play), but that specific sliver is entertaining enough to keep me from walking away entirely. I keep my fleet carrier not because I use it all the time, but rather it because it gives me a reason to make credits, which helps give a sense of purpose to my gameplay. Oh, and I should also point out that I do this in VR, which sets Elite apart from my newfound love X4 Foundations. If Odyssey tech is rolled back into Horizons and I suffer a framerate reduction because of it, preventing me from playing in VR smoothly, then I too will be "signing off".

Of course this means I've had to diversify, as one cannot play installation defense for hours every day without getting bored. This is why I now have a Steam library full of space games like X4, Space Engineers, Space Engine, NMS, EGS, etc. ED is no longer my main space game, not by a long shot. This does mean that Frontier has lost a customer in some regards - I'm not spending money on Arx, nor will I be buying Odyssey until it's on serious sale. They probably wish I would "sign off" to free up server space, LOL.

* There is a literal RL buffet I used to visit (before the pandemic) that is exactly like this. Do Brits even have buffets, or is that an American thing?

I think nobody questions that Odyssey isn't successful and that players are less active. That wasn't my point though.

The problem is just that people post numbers and graphs without understanding them.
That 75% of players left Elite can't be claimed by looking at the charts, unless you have no idea what you are looking at.

You're right - it's more like 90% :p

And yet no actions are beeing taken...
3 Weeks with out Road Map.
1 Week with out any info on what's in Update 6, or when we could expect it.

Maybe they thought it was enough - but threads like this shows them, that it is not.
Well... Davids post was on Monday this week. We are now at Sunday of the same week Davids latest post was posted. I expect to hear something during next week.

In my experience, as a Brit that has lived in the US for the past 20 years, buffets were very much a rarity in the UK. Which 90% of the time is a good thing. The other 10% is of course the breakfast buffet, which I cannot resist.

The big question is, do Americans call it a "bouffay" (as in Phoebe off Friends) or "Buffet" like Warren Buffett?

At any rate, It's been a long and patient journey for me... but I guess it ends here - for now.

07 commanders, signing off.

Like you I am switching to Nier , struggling with 3 androids and mechanical lifeforms. I know it is late but better than never. Elite Dangerous is overall a good game but I know it is the time to stop too as the gameplay demands too many grinding and is intervened by too many gankers. Also it seems impossible to find Raxxla in ED.
Respect and Take care. Glory to Mankind !

You keep saying that, yet provide no explanation ... care to weight in?
