Putting wingmen behind a 'human wall' doesn't make them any less viable.
If the counter to a lot of people hiring NPC wingmen, is for everyone else to do so, that creates its
own balance.
Besides, if the user base did what Frontier
wants them to do, we'd all be flying around with human wingmen, anyway... The reason we don't is because most of us don't know someone else with a copy of the game who is not only near our location, but shares our time-zone.
Regardless, I was using this as an example of why Frontier's development strategy is a bit skewed. If they wanted to give themselves
less work, then why did they spend all the time, money and reources on modelling and animating the fighters and individual launching bays, when NPC wingmen with FSD ships would be
more useful (and also more realistic)? They could have used that same time, money and resources on more necessary fixes/additions. Hey, maybe even to the point where they would have developed the new crew feature to be as diverse and useful as we wanted it to be!
