News 2.3 Dev Update

because 2 days traveling to the other side of the galaxy just to see the latest discovery(someone else found) is so much fun.

and as for space unicorn transportation,it's a hologram with remote access.we have drones now is the hologram that far fetched for the time :)

Not caring about immersion would be a perfectly respectable position, were this being marketed as just another arcade blaster, as opposed to how Frontier have chosen to: A simulator with supposedly massive attention to authentic scientific realism.
If that were actually the case: you should run screaming now. This is a WWII fighter game in a space setting. The *only* thing realistic is the galaxy itself.

I'm not even complaining about the magic like FSD.... just tooling around: there isn't a single realistic thing about these ships, their speeds, or how they function. There isn't even much that actually makes sense. This is science fantasy.

I'm OK with that. But don't come tell me this is a "simulation" or has "authentic scientific realism".

so true...good points blaize. Holo Me should have died some seconds after it came on the flip chart. Still wondering why nobody at Frontier sees all the trouble it creates...

I'll tell you why. Every fool who gets a bit of power/wealth seems to forget own nature and starts thinking as if their decisions were the only right ones. Yet they are merely humans, but they forget it. And no matter how many people will be telling about their mistakes, these lads doesn't care.

But of course this only applies to the people whose opinions and decisions you don't think are the right ones, right?

But thats the point. With implementing this poorly thought out holo me system for multi crew they are saying we have the technology to NOT be in the ship at all either. So why would anyone be in the ship instead of using holo tech, when they would save all the expense, weight and trouble of having a cockpit, life support and danger of being in space...

Not to mention that this holo me you create and change at will is the avatar you see in your own pilot seat as well, meaning that IS the same holo me that you transmit if you crew up.

A VERY bad implementation for the sake of a limited turret mode that multicrew has devolved into. Thats without even getting into the balance issues of 'pay to win' via multi account afk commanders that give extra pips and duplicate free credits...

The really sad thing is it could easily be fit in to the existing gameworld with no extra effort in a way that enhances the setting and preserves its functionality.

1) Make holo me just an actual commander creator you create once (with costume, hair style changes etc possible later).
2) Allow players to create npc avatars to sit in their empty bridge seats. No extra benefits need to be added, but it gives people that populated bridge at zero extra effort as well that we don't have.
3) For instant multicrew have players take over these npcs in the same way they are implementing multicrew anyway - no teleprescence or holo me problems involved, no continuity problems caused.
I 2nd that

I totally agree with you on this one. It should be CMDR creator, and you should have to be in the same station to crew up. Im not happy about this Holo-Me bull at all.

What is the problem with the Holo me feature? Why you are guys are saying this is gonna be bad? I´ve been waiting for this since I´ve bought the game!

ED is /was imo a science fiction game. the thing with good science fiction is whilst a lot of it is pure , it is loyal to its own internal rules.
so imo the question is, does telepresence for ships crew create a scenario where it breaks other already established rules. if no then imo it can work and be written in without issue but if it does then it is imo poorly written

Nothing wrong with it. You just hear a vocal minority from one end of the spectrum who's immersion when south. If FD had taken the 'joining at a station' route, you would of heard a vocal minority from the other end of the spectrum who would not have been able to join a comrade in battle instantly. The rest just plays the game. So nothing special, just another day at the office...

I think it's pretty obvious why FD, went with the holo-me, and the telepresence concepts in patch 2.3. The game doesn't have the infrastructure needed to make it easy to meet up with someone to join ships, people can be quite literally an hour away or more in game. For most players it would undoubtedly be a difficult and cumbersome process for multi Crew and alot of people would probably not even utilize it because of the hassle. Plus this is an extension of what's already in place when your fighters. The Holo me concept is really just a way to explain the visualization players see when you join someone on their ship and in your fighters. Also with only one real avatar slot for the foreseeable future. The Holo me concept allows players to change their characters appearance which is the closest thing you'll get at this point in time to a new player experience. Plus it's just fun and allows for a consistently engaging experience.

would somebody ever leave the comfort of a tropical earthlike planet, if he could remote control a space vessel through the whole galaxy in realtime?

Why would there be space stations with habitat zones, if you could remote control your ship from your home office?

Why would anyone live on the surface of an icy rock?

Why would anyone pay you the equivalent of 100+ sidewinders, to remote control a ship to point X to get some data, if he could easily do from the couch himself...

Why would anyone risk his life, in a fighter, of an remote controlled ship?

Why would there be cockpits on ships?

Why would there be life support on ships at all?

Why would you jump 100s of systems to get some data collected, if you could remotely buy a ship in the target system 1000ly away, tele precense into its cockpit, and start from there....

While I understand, this tele precense idea grounds on gameplay comfort reasons, it completely destroys the inner logic of this sci fi setting, built around travelling a huge galaxy.....

how come holograms suffocate when there is a canopy breach?
