[3D VISION FIX] Elite Dangerous + EDTracker + 3D Vision = AWESOME!!!

I think I understand how to adjust the star fields thanks to your excellent tutelage. my main battle is with crosstalk and finding a balance with depth and convergence that reduces that while still provide the 3d environment I enjoy. Unfortunately it seems the depth setting makes the most impact on the crosstalk, depths over 30% it becomes distracting to me, no matter the convergence setting. Right now I am using the frame of the windshield as a depth reference and trying to match it in perspective (somewhat) to the exterior view of the ship and how far it seems the pilot is to the HUD. There is quite a bit of depth there (flying a Cobra at the moment.) Thanks for answering the question on the planets, I forgot about the / command. I will try that tonight. It might be that my monitor has a large degree of ghosting and I need to try to get over it and look beyond it. (curious what kind of monitor you have) It would also be nice if nvidia had a reference on the GUI for the convergence like they do the depth. All in all I am quite pleased that it is even possible and thankful for people like you and HELIX who singlehandeley have kept this alive despite nvidia's lame support. Unfortunately that is the MO - they seem to always chase the next iteration for a sale rather than support their innovations. I own a Shield portable and they basically created a tech demo and then abandoned it in a year. (It is cool to stream your PC to a portable device and great for emulation gaming.)

Hello mate

I have an Asus 27" something or other non G-sync but 144hz. I'll edit in the model when I get back.[EDIT: ASUS VG278HE] I get crosstalk but not enough that is does my head in. I used to have a first generation 23" Viewsonic which suffered crazy amounts of crosstalk at the top of the screen. Unless you have a dual-link projector, which has two outputs you will get some ghosting. I try to ignore it. I have found I become blind to it; I remember watching some documentary that demonstrated how our brain/eyes filter out extraneous information (the put a boxes showing white noise on a screen and after a while the viewer couldn't see them) and I have always just thought that was it. I stop thinking about the crosstalk and soon stop seeing it completely. If I obsess over it I notice it.

I also allow my monitor a good 15+ minutes to warm up. As Helifax on the 3D Vision forum mentioned, try putting your LCD watch in the freezer, take it out and watch the crosstalk on it, until it warms up!

Ironically I have found increasing depth 'can' mask some of the crosstalk because where the ghosting is, there is often something else which is brighter or different enough from the original masking it; less depth means the gap isn't sufficient so you can clearly see the crosstalk.

Unless I want to mess with convergence for an arty PoV e.g. temporally enjoying toyification in a game, I set it once then forget. Don't forget to set the convergence Ctrl + F7 so you only have to do it once. Yeah, the Cobra is quite spacey, especially compared the Eagle! I like the Vulture - the space is HUGE for a fighter. My fav cockpit must be the Asps. Sure it's bland but the FoV is awesome! So helpful, especially for Flight Assist off flying and landing! :)

Preaching to the choir about NVidia bruv! sigh!

Let me know how you get on, yah? L8rs!

Hello! I don't understand the installation process. I just have regular Elite Dangerous (not through Steam, not Horizons) and the instructions make no sense to me. I don't have a "FORC-FDEV-D-1010" folder!

Any suggestions/help?

Updated to v9

[CHANGELOG]
Fixed trails - they were haloing but I had hardly noticed!

@ BossFight

Soz - I didn't check post for ED users. :/

I think ED users should follow the same instructions as ED:H though. You must use the 64bit client because I haven't updated 32bit. If you are using 32bit let me know - yah?
So, install to:
C:\[YOUR GAMES FOLDER]\EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-64

Remember:
  • Shadows OFF in menu
  • Make sure you are in real 3D mode and not Compatibility Mode: CTRL+ALT+F11 toggles between to the two modes.

Have fun! :)

Quick question, what is the difference between the two downloads mentioned in the OP? The OP would suggest the 2nd one is compatible with 64-bit, but if I follow the 1st link it says the same plus it says v9 instead of v8 on the 2nd?
A very big thank you for working on this, this has been a dream for me and I can't wait to try it out! :D

The difference is the OP, me, is a numpty. I forgot to update the link to put v9.

The difference is super minor though, just a fixed to the halo in the thruster trails. I have spotted another halo in the FSD wake of ships, which needs fixing; that will be another minor fix. While I can't fix the shadows, meaning they must be disabled, I may as well try to make everything else look as cool as possible.

So... I hope this is not a dumb question, which version do I take? They now seem to be identical?
Edit: I'm running Horizons if it matters.

Edit2: Since they're the same (I think) I just installed the first one :). For those with Norton: it doesn't trust the DLL files so if it's not working -> check whether it trashed them without you noticing.
I'm afraid that 3D is not going to work for me though :( can't get the convergence setting to play nice with my glasses (prismatic glasses). An issue I had in other 3D games too, perhaps I will get normal glasses just for 3D in the future xD.

Hello mate!

You would need to be OCD to spot the difference between 8 and 9! I have updated the links anyway. Use the newer one. All you need to do is to empty out the ShaderFixes folder (including all the bin files that should have been generated if the fix was working properly) and paste the contents of ShaderFixes folder of the newer fix. It is one file difference.

I am running Horizons too. With shadows off and NVidia's CM off (so proper 3D on), the game should look sweet.

If you think something is afoot or you need a vastly different convergence setting, post a stereo screenshot using the docking tutorial ideally showing the nebula and station with the depth and convergence how you want it. Let me know the depth. I will see if I can tweak the nebula shaders for you to better fit your config.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! So my Products folder is empty... Am I just artarded or is there something missing?

Andy,
I tweaked my starfield shaders, I guess I could chase them down and then copy just the new shaders over or I wonder would it be difficult to just supply the new shaders fixes in a separate download for people who already have your tweaks installed?

Ofc

I keep forgetting people might have a different setups and (gasp!) preferences.

I will upload two sets of files: a fresh install and one with just the shaderfixes folder, sans starfields and nebula. So you can safely overwrite the shaderfolder files without overwriting the neb and starfields. :)

I will edit the OP and Helix later on.

I take it you are also tweaking the starfields AND the two neb files then?

I haven't been out in the black since Horizons so I don't know if the old 32bit starfield shaders are borked. I am tempted to see the barnacles so there is a good chance I will find a starfield or two en-route. (IIRC I needed to get close to Sag A* before catching another starfield...)

All the best!

What system are you in? I may not have got there to find the shader.

I take it the other starfields are fine, as in they are rendered the furthest out, in the control (the tutorials)? If not you will need to reduce/increase convergence to sync them.

V11

Just updated it slightly to V11

Added a folder sans shadows and nebula for those wishing to upgrade. Upgrades need to just dump and overwrite the files from the: ShaderFixes UPGRADE WITHOUT STARFIELD +NEBULA folder to the ShaderFixes folder.

V11 Changelog
  • Reduced the cockpit halo in the stars (I thought it was just crosstalk!). I think I need to find one more shader to kill it completely but this one is alluding me so far! :(
  • Fixed Orbit lines - subtle but really noticeable!

All the best!

Hey Andy. Just wanted to say a quick and big thank you for your work. I can't imagine ever playing without your fixes again. :)

Thank you so much for spending your efforts into this! Finaly I can play ED in an enjoyable 3D Experience.

Is there a way to change the hotkeys? e.g. depending on your keyboard-type you can't simply press "/" as on QWERTZ-Keyboards you have to press Shift + 7 for an / (which obviously does not trigger your function). Also, I already have mapped "." to show the system map.

I almost forgot of this hardware...

is there anyplace where it can be bought klinda cheap/someone selling it for they move to Oculus/Vive?

Thanks! :D

.
Easy! :)
.
Open up d3dx.ini in notepad++ or a text editor
.
Scroll down to around line 68
.
You should see something like this:
.
Code:
[Key1]
; THIS IS TO TOGGLE PLANET DEPTHS so they look bigger: default = OFF
Key = /
type = toggle
w = 1.0
.
Where is says: Key = /
.
Change the / to your key of choice.
.
All the best!
