A call to arms for all white knights

I honestly don't think that 18 month thing is cut in stone. It's just a projection that gives them ample time to do develop what they want to release and I'll be willing to bet it will be sooner than 18 months. I think it also includes working out what bugs are in the system now. We'll see patches and small releases along the way which will invariably include some bugs but no matter. They ARE working on this game and that's good enough for me.

For the cost of the base game, then Horizons, then what things I've purchased from the store I might be into this game maybe $100 minus the computer system updates that I probably would have done anyway. I think I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it from the hours of real entertainment it provides. Plus it keeps me out of trouble. I often think to myself... "Hmmm, should I put on a ski mask and go rob a bank or should I just stay home and play ED?" ED calls to me and I stay out of prison. Win-Win!!!

Does white knight have a different meaning in this community? I always thought white knights were beta orbiters who kiss butt attempting (usually in vain) to get laid.

[...] gather white knights together in one place. [...] do something else if you really don't like it that much.
Spoiler alert: Those spouting vitriol, doom and gloom - they're just "closet white knights" because they really like the game.
If they didn't like the game, they would do exactly like you said - make a statement and something else.

Its FDEV forum slang for any poster who isn't having a tantrum.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the game, and overall it's in a decent place. That doesn't change the fact that some really poor decisions have been made. Add to that the fact that satisfied people don't tend to come on forums to rant about how satisfied they are, and really, things (on the forum) aren't that bad. Even the old hands that are whining about bgs abnormalities, and various broken game mechanics (HGEs) would happily tell you what's good about the game, and encourage others to look past the issues, but there's no need to talk about that. The stuff that works, works. I can't really make a thread titled 'so those thargoids, eh? Wow they're working as intended.',and even that choice of content to praise (cos I'm enjoying them right now), is also facing bugs at the moment (galmap states to show us where they are, aren't working). But I'm happy to write 90% of the problems off to; 'Damn, dude, this game is an enormous monster now, no wonder it has some issues'.

I want to criticize the white knights for not playing enough of the game or at enough depth to realize the issues, and the doomers for ridiculously overstating their case. The truth as always, is somewhere in the middle.

I think you put that really well, Aashenfox. The doom-sayers are obviously off their nut, but the white knights "not playing enough of the game or at enough depth to realize the issues" is a very serious concern. White knights are all categorically summed up by both their lack of in-depth knowledge/low expectation in tandem with their lavish spending habits in the store: if the white knights quit spending so much money and the store started drying up, Fdev would certainly find new motivation to sort this game's problems out. As it is, they are financially incentivized to not sort anything out....because the white knights have such low expectations and are happy with the status quo enough to keep spending money. Ergo, things will never fundamentally change. As long as money is coming in from the store, nothing significant will ever change, and this includes whatever big plans Will was alluding to.

The only thing that can possibly break ED out of the cycle of constant regurgitation of mediocrity at this point would be a true competitor emerging on the scene, another game in the genre that would force Fdev to get serious.

I've never bought a cosmetic video game thing, I don't understand the attraction. Its definitely a preferable approach to subscription fee's though, which was always the plan.

As a counterpoint to almost every other thread I thought I would try to gather white knights together in one place. I'm bored of reading the forum just bashing the game. Seriously, just quietly go off and do something else if you really don't like it that much.

I seem to be the only one who's really enjoying the game at the moment. Of course I'd like new updates on a more regular basis but I've basically played fairly constantly for some years now.

A game that keeps my attention and enjoyment for that long is rare. I like Elite because it's varied, because it lets me explore the galaxy, it lets me fly spaceships, it has a political framework to get involved with, it has Colonia to give a different feel to the same game, it has the best space combat anywhere and despite now being four years old the graphics remain superb. The game has developed enormously since it was first released

In short, I like Elite and will continue playing Elite. In 18 months or whenever I'll still be here looking forward to the new development of the game.

Rant over, positive replies welcome, negative ones please leave your stuff at the door

I do not identify with labels like "white knights" or "haters" or any of that kind of stuff, but if FDev needs us to wait until 2020, then that is how it is. There is nothing one can do.
I hope what we get will be worth the wait.

But there are lots of things we can do... Riot of the Forum, cry havoc, ragequit and haz stuffz, write open Letters, kill noobs in Eravate... Not that it will matter, but we can do a lot :D

I could care less about new development at this juncture. I want them to fix the current game. I honestly have no idea how they could pile on another buggy update on top of the current bug heap. I can only think of a couple of activities I can do in this game without encountering bugs. That needs to be fixed. So, I am a white knight if that means to slow development and put more effort into fixing the current version.

I'm more of a neutral knight or maybe an ambivalent knight ... I really didn't see anything negative in the last Community update.

What now?

We know that waiting for a mammoth update like this one is going to feel like your 3rd run to Hutton Orbital. But don’t fret, we’ve got plenty of updates, content, and plans happening as we progress through to this monumental milestone.

As well as the team of developers working on our next big milestone, we also have a smaller development team focused on adding to and improving the existing game between now and that time. This will take the form of regular game updates and development supported events.

Seems rather positive to me.

18 months is nothing really. I'm pretty swamped irl, that I can barely keep up with the pace of updates as it stands. I'll probably still be chasing my first Elite rank by then, and hopefully by the time it drops I'll have some time to play. If we factor in breaks from the game, it might as well be dropping next week.

Now, if this game was all I had going on in my life, 18 months would feel like an eternity. It's all a matter of perspective.

Telling players who have legitimate concerns about the recently announced 1.5 year delay in paid expansion content to "just quietly go off and do something else" is a great way to promote Elite as a game and franchise.

I mean there's nothing better I can think of for a game than to literally tell its players to go away for 1.5 years and do something else with their time and money.

I agree with this, I'm so surprised by the toxic response in this forum

I know, all of those toxic customers expecting FD to actually deliver content when they said they would deliver content. It's so toxic! Customers actually expecting the product they literally paid for to be properly developed and released on time, not 1.5 years later! How dare they?

You must be talking about LEP, because I haven't paid for any future content.

White night ... grey- haired fanboy ... call me what you like. I love this game and have far too much to do to be worrying about what's coming in 2020. From the announcement it seems like there'll be quite a few smaller releases between now and then also so it's not like the game is frozen until then. I just hope that the game keeps moving forward and is here for the long haul ... I hope to be playing this game in 20 years time, God willing.

I get to continue to play the game I enjoy whilst bug fixes, enhancements, and even new content is added, and all the while a major update is being developed for further down the track. Excuse me while I find a corner to cry in, and then create an altar from which to make sacrifices for casting curses at Frontier.

But oh my RNGeesus, a game developer said they'd do something but didn't do that thing somehow! What is the world coming to?
If they say they're going to do something, then they should do it in exactly the way they said they would by the due date they said they would, regardless of any other circumstances, considerations, or changes in direction, so that I can complain when those circumstances have an adverse affect on what they did, and admonish them for not taking more time to do it.

My point is, they can't win, as I get to complain in all cases, because that's the real game. Elite Dangerous is just a side quest.

The simple fact is that if FDev could roll out the next paid content tomorrow, they would. Getting annoyed is akin to my kids getting annoyed at me not bringing them to Disneyland tomorrow.

You can speculate forever about whether or not they're devoting enough resources to the game or any of the other possible factors that nobody outside the doors of Frontier Towers is actually privy to, but ultimately as long as they deliver an update eventually, and are actually developing the game, that's as much as they owe anybody.

I still fail to comprehend that forum users are belittled and ridiculed for admitting they like the game, and those that look for every fault, whether real or imagined, are lauded as truthsayers!
