You're easily impressed then, Pre-patching is a very common thing these days.

Remember to remove your Steam bandwidth cap (if you use one)

After the launcher updated I had to restart Steam (twice). Second time, Elite started upgrading.

I got a 1.8gig dowload, but as a life time holder I don't yet see that I own Odyssey (in steam) and I have not got the 48gig preload.

What exactly does "pre-patching" mean? Is this some sort of preparation?

Yes, they release the files in advance of the actual go-live date, to ensure users can play from the get-go.

That said, despite the Twitter (see Aliens post) I do not see EDO to download.
