Even though I already have ED set up as a non steam shortcut, I'm going to say yes as it will ensure any screenshot I take will get directed to the community hub. Mainly just in case any users get interested in games by looking at the relevant hubs that is, though any other features no matter how small may be useful too.

Giving steam key to backers & people who bought the game on Frontier Dev website is a no brainer, they've been supporting the game for a long time already. They've paying full price without the steam 30% cut and gave more money to FD. Steam key allow us to stream the game, affiliate YT video to the steam hub & give us the confort of having a game always updated (having 30min download when you have just enough time for a short session is a pain ). anyway Steam key +1 ;p

I voted yes. I like having all my games in one place. If I knew Elite was going to be on Steam beforehand, but I wouldnt've gotten a key if I bought it sooner, I would've probably waited on buying it.
I like accessing my games trough the steam library, not to mention it gives me a rough indication of how many hours i've spent playing a game, which I value more than I'd like to admit. If the developers are still looking into the possibility of giving us steam keys for our games, I say yes please.. Why not? It doesn't cost them anything, we've already bought the game.. If anything, it's good customer service.

I'm literally living in Steam. With almost 400 games on Steam i can't imagine gaming without the workshops, trophies, badges, cards, emoticons, gifts, seasonal sales, coupons, guides and funny reviews, streaming, screenshots, broadcasts — this is why I love Steam.
And really can't remember the last time I visited an actual "forum" of a game (phpBB boards, so 90's...) maybe years ago, but I use the Steam Discussions hourly - from the Big Picture mode.

The situation is similar to the GTA V case, where most online store sells the RockstarStore code, Steam sells a Steam version, with all its extra features. You can guess, I bought the Steam version.

Last year I did some research and found that ED will not available on Steam, so I bought it from the store.elitedangerous.com (http://zaonce.net),
and now we are here...

Yes, I would like one. I like the ability to see how long I've put into a game and getting achievements. Also, the steam overlay is really handy when I need to communicate with friends and/or play games with them.

I don't think there is a decision to be made. Not giving out Steam keys would be an insulting move in my opinion. There is no "Let's see if players want this", it should be a 'Let's provide it to people that want it". This shouldn't have become a thing in the first place, it should have been:
Dev: "Well, we are launching this on Steam now I guess. People are gonna want Steam Keys. Let's look into that BEFORE we put it up."
Management: "Good idea Dev! Make it so!"

Instead we got:

Dev: "Well, we are launching this on Steam now I guess. People are gonna want Steam Keys. Let's look into that BEFORE we put it up."
Management: "Nah, screw it. People don't want that, who would want that? That would waste time, and wasted time is wasted money. I mean, who would want a Steam key when they have our launcher? Am I right? I know I'm right."
And if history can be expected to repeat (not saying history specific to Frontier, just the game industry), what we'll get is:
"Contact support for a Steam key"
followed some time later, after support has been overwhelmed and has a X months backlog:
"Steam key now available on your account page whether you requested one or not."

Yes please, I would also like a steam key. I bought ED 3 days before it came to steam and I'm so angry I did. Had I simply waited, I would now be able to enjoy such features as chating with my steam friends while in-game, gaining badges, using steam workshop (potentially), posting screenshots and video to the community hub, writing reviews, use steam in-home streaming, benefit from steam's reliable update service, be able to easily check the integrity of the game chache, plus if DLC is ever released for ED I will be missing out on those awesome steam sales. There are so many reasons that I would rather own the steam version, but you lied to us all. Think about this Frontier Developments, you were adamant that elite:dangerous would not come to steam, ever, all signs pointed to no steam ever. That, we now see, was an absolute lie, you are liars. And now that the game has finally come to steam, a fact that I am very happy about, you refuse to give your backers keys. Don't forget that you didn't have the money to produce this game in the first place, you needed kickstarter, and you got it, from all the people that remembered just how much they loved the old elite games. They dug into their wallets and gave you their hard earned money on nothing more than a promise. and now that we have a clear poll saying that 3/4 of players would please like a steam key, what do you respond with? "we'll look into it and go from there". That response is the definition of evasive and noncommittal. It's very obvious that you are doing this in the hopes that some of us will buy the game a second time, what a kick in the teeth, isn't it time for you show a little thanks to the people who helped you so much? Do the right thing, give us our steam keys please.

I suspect this is the problem with Steam keys: If/when we buy future expansions, we have to go through FD's online store, so FD gets all the profit. That's great!

But if we're given steam keys, we're more likely to buy future expansions through the Steam store. In that case Valve takes 1/3 of the profit or so. FD would of course prefer that we buy expansions directly from them, and I think it's a Steam requirement that Valve can't be locked out from selling the expansions. This would be a big loss of revenue for FD.

Of course Valve getting a cut of all Steam sales is fair, but I don't think they should benefit from future expansion sales from current owners.

TL;DR: If we do get Steam keys, please buy future expansions directly from FD, not through Steam.

Possible solution:- Just give free steam keys to those who have already paid for a lifetime expansion pass?

Then they lose nothing

No, I won't do that. and steam doesn't get 1/3, it's much less than that I think. If there are future expansions for this game, and I have not been given a steam key, I will never, ever, ever buy them. If Frontier doesn't give me my steam key, I will never buy anything from frontier again. I feel used and extorted by a company that didn't have enough money to launch ED in the first place without a kickstarter campaign, and is now turning their backs on their customers. Even if I do get a steam key at this point, there is no denying that Frontier is using underhand tactics to try and squeeze a little more money out of people. Imagine if Frontier releases steam keys fro everyone in 1 month. Imagine how many people in the meantime will have bought a second copy of the game, just to be able to play it on steam. Even if only 1% buy a second copy, we're talking tens of thousands of dollars. This is why Frontier is doing this. I imagine after about 1 month everyone who will have bought a second copy will have, and at that point they can release steam keys to everyone to make it look like they are the good guys in the end. So no, I will not buy any future updates from the frontier store, in fact, can guarantee that I will never buy anything from the frontier store again, I've bought 1 product from them last week, and I've already been ripped off. Let me make this next part very clear, the only way frontier will ever get any money from me again will be through the steam store, and that is only if I get a steam key.

I genuinely don't care about having a Steam key. I object to people feeling as if they're somehow entitled to one, particularly when this sense of entitlement encourages them to behave rudely and disrespectfully.

That being said, I understand why some people might want Steam keys and if FD choose to provide them then that's fine by me.
