Yes, steam keys please, if Braben had not said that it would not be on Steam I would have waited until it was and purchased it then, since he changed his mind and decided Steam WAS beneficial, I feel that it's only fair to provide us a way to link our present account to Steam via a Steam key. And no, adding it as a non-steam game is not the same!

are there any news updates on this ?

Only that Michael Brookes said this a few days ago: "For those of you who already own Elite: Dangerous from our store and asked about getting the game in your Steam collection: we hear you and we’re looking into it. We can’t speak for other cases where the same question has come up, but turning EliteDangerous.com customers into Steam customers unfortunately isn't 100 percent our decision and isn’t free for us in the context of the game’s ongoing growth and development. It could take a few weeks to work through, but we hear your feedback and addressing it is a priority for all of us.".

Would love to play the game through Steam, I haven't played since the beta, but if I could play it through steam I could get into it again. But it looks like Frontier are determined to not allow that to happen, despite the apparent fact that it would cost them nothing to achieve it. In fact, I can only see benefits for Frontier if they go through with this, it'll generate more exposure for the game through social aspects of Steam.

From what I've heard it's possible to tether one's ED account to a steam key, so the keys won't be able to be exploited (like some people have been saying in this thread).

It's exactly the same game. No rewards or additional content with steam.

Would you refuse to watch Firefly until it's on Netflix? Would you refuse to eat lobster until they serve it in McDonald's?

Why are people obsessed with steam. It's like a cult.

Edit: The devs have confirmed there are ongoing costs for issuing keys. They also confirmed it is not 100% their decision to issue keys.

Ask Valve to explain the delays to you. Why are Valve causing problems?

Would I like a key? yes

Do I need one? no.

For all the people wanting a steam key, just wait until they have a trial version and install that - the key is not your ingame account (as far as I know) so all steam does is give you
some more stat & social options which I'm pretty sure you can get by adding it as a non-steam game to the steam client.

If they start selling extras through steam instead of their current portal then it would be nice, but could be bad given the way steam prices some things for Australia, and it still may be cheaper/better to buy from the game portal but until then all this is a storm in a little teeny tiny teacup

Thanks. Can you link to the direct quote?

Fly safe.

Why yes, I would love an extra layer of DRM wrapped around my game, sure why not ;)

But seriously, why do people want a Steam copy too? You can play the game through Steam already if you want, just add it as a non-steam game.

Steam offers services that many take for granted - such as tracking the amount of time you spend playing the game, or LAN sharing, which is important to some. Setting E: D up as a non-Steam game almost feels like owning an illegitimate copy. I own the game, and would like be allowed to launch it as I want, even though it doesn't make much difference.

That said, Steam keys aren't necessary. IMHO, Frontier supplying a key would be a friendly gesture, rather than a necessary fix. They haven't done anything wrong aside from making some misleading comments in the past, and they don't have to correct anything.

You can do the LAN sharing with non-steam games too. I've played elite on my laptop from my PC via Steam.

Obviously I wouldn't care if we all got Steam keys as well, it doesn't really make any difference, but I'd definitely not want to *replace* my non-steam version with a steam copy. Valve customer service is notoriously shocking, and it's just introducing another potential point of failure (another service to go down, or heaven forbid Valve see fit to ban your account you can kiss goodbye to all your games with little to no avenue of recourse.)

Auto-updates. Keeping the game perm up-to-date is a serious bonus for me who only plays Elite once a month.
Assuming Steam does that in a worthwhile manner; it's been a while since I last ran an MMO through Steam, but it seemed for the most part it only ever kept the launcher up to date.
Don't get me wrong, I want a key (if for no other reason than to have access to the Steam discussions for the game), my past experience with Steam an MMO's was less than stellar though. (I've bought a few MMO's through Steam and then just downloaded the MMO outside of Steam.)

I assume it will work the same way other games with external launchers on steam work. It wont update unless you click to play the game and open the launcher. I mean it would be neat if it did just update like most other steam games.

agreed. i will own a steam copy, eventually. if i have to buy one it will be when it will cost me less than 10 USD. now b4 you go off on a rage about my frugality i should caution you to not go about spending other people's money. also i own the premium beta. which brings me to my next point. as the game was designed to use a launcher for drm and as i understand it the steam version does not use a launcher; frontier may have painted themselves into a conundrum. if i am correct, the alpha and beta ownership plans will _never_ be compatible with steam b/c, like every perfect world game, they require launchers to push PTS builds. admittedly Firefall got around this by making PTS a separate install.

in the mean time ill be happy with the product i have already paid for. if frontier wishes to add value you my purchase by allowing me to add it to my steam library vice just linking to steam (which worked all the way back in beta, after some minor bumps, i might add) then great. if they wish it not, i can wait for the bargain bin sale. really, i can wait that long.
