PvP An Investigation Into Frontier's Actions on Combat Logging, Part 2

Don't know about BF, but while most online games I've played indeed allowed you to exit the game, whenever you like in some form, exiting during combat was a death sentence, because the game server kept the "avatar" (be it a ship, character or whatever) in the instance. In these games, clogging is not an issue, because anyone doing it is instantly punished for it.

But back to Elite Dangerous... if there's really a real life "emergency" that can't wait for the 15 seconds it takes to high wake, then my ship's rebuy is probably my smallest problem.

If memory serves me, this is what Everquest does/did back when I played it. You logged or task-killed, didn't matter, your avatar stuck around to get its face eaten by whatever Grue was gnawing on it.

If i would work for Frontier i would have given everybody who'd had a fishy disconnection the last 6 months a 1 month ban form the open server..

Define 'fishy'. If you mean "disconnected ungracefully during combat" then can you prove it wasn't a client exe error? Mine has been distinctly janky over the last couple of weeks when there's a few commanders about...I'm talking actual error boxes complete with 'send report' buttons.

First off, I'm in no way condoning combat logging. It's against the spirit of the game, much less the rules. Just want to get that cleared up first.

However, you're up against two separate problems here. The first is that, frankly, no-one trusts you. Even if you're now wearing a white hat, people are going to be looking for your presumed ulterior motive. That one's on you, frankly.
Second, while combat logging is indeed a problem, it's a problem that's mostly only affecting a small subset of the player base - the PvP'ers. Given that Frontier have limited resources they can either work on problems that affect the bulk of the player base or they can work on problems that affect a vastly smaller number of players. And in that situation "the needs of the many" is going to win.

Talking of trust I think the biggest issue with the 5-1 cheating wasn't the fact that it was a cheat or that lots of SDC were doing it. The reason it keeps coming up (and will keep on coming up) was the people doing it were running round the forum telling all the legit players they should "git-gud". Sneering hypocrisy like that doesn't win you trust or friends.

It certainly needs addressing, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Frontier ultimately have bigger fish to fry.

If FDEV fixed clogging overnight nothing would change, the cloggers would switch to high wake or menu log and we'd still be right where we are now. FDEV can probably see that and understand the futility of any fix, but can't be seen to say so.

The bottom line is that PVP is optional.

See how that turns out.. pretty sure ALL of you would get a ban.

Not to mention all the XboxOne and PS4 players with issues with XboxLive or PSN.

As a moderator you should try to retain your neutrality in discussions like this, IMHO. You are implicitly supporting a stance which is in conflict with FDev's official game rules.

I respect your honesty.

The player who purchased the "guinea pig account" only ever used a VPN when logging into and playing on it. Even so, the player in question did not have anything to do with the last operation.

Your group pride is so great this would have been mentioned in the OP if it was true.

Yes, we are bad guys in the game.

You are not the bad guys, you are the misfit game wreckers. Like a poker player who insists that 2 pair is the best hand. Will All-In when they have 2 pair, will fold on anything higher. Yes, you are playing Poker by the rules, but it just spoils everyone elses game. We dont really care if you dont like the game the way you have chosen to play, and would rather someone else was in the seat.

Regardless, nobody should tolerate cheating, regardless of what role they play in the game.
There are lots of things in life I have to tolerate which are wrong, like BMW drivers lack of indicators. Its not right, its not legal, but I dont expect the world to revolve around my issues. People dont care.

If people cannot see past the fact that I have destroyed a few players' ships in open play to see the huge issue I've just outlined regarding widespread, unpunished, game-breaking cheating, then that is just sad.
People dont care.

I and all the other SDC guys go to a lot of effort in and out of the game to help people improve at whatever they're doing, whether it's PvP, trading, exploring, or whatnot.
Oh ! Its all for me is it ? Cheers, but I didnt ask for your help, and dont really want it. Maybe you should set up a PG where people who DO want that kind of help can go and be clearly identified.

The fact that taskkilling is an option just completely nullifies all of our efforts.
Maybe your efforts are not appreciated ?

When moderators post in a non-mod capacity then they are free to express whatever opinion they care to, just as we are. It does, however, remove their ability to then subsequently moderate that thread. Or at least that's my understanding.

The fact that Frontier has allowed some truly "exploited" engineer upgrades to remain in the game, despite overwhelming evidence of these being achieved through unadulterated cheating, makes anything regarding combat logging the Mootest point in history.

If I come against a ship that despite having ridiculously overcharged weapons, capable of taking down ANY shield system within a few minutes, is unable to take that ship's shields down AT ALL, I would log out long before I would ever consider attempting a combat engagement with such an OBVIOUS CHEAT!

Absolutely agree with you, a while back I was in the process of upgrading my Corvette, I already had my shields at 5035mj and armour at 2660, on my way to get my beams iirc to G5 when I was attacked, I have no idea if it was a swarm or a single player as my shields and hull were down and destroyed in less than 15seconds, I couldn't jump as I was masslocked and my weapons had no effect whatsoever. Paid my 32mcr rebuy and then restarted and exactly the same thing happened again. I put in a ticket as I don't care how good a pilot or weapons are, nothing should be able to destroy a Corvette that quickly and FD obviously agreed as they repaid me but I still lost a load of cargo and exploration data I was bringing to the engineer. Later I read about logging out and if similar circumstances happen that is exactly what I will do. I don't have a problem getting killed or paying the rebuy cost in a "fair" encounter but what happened to me was not fair at all.

Nice summation thank you.
Guess I can get back to more important things like what kind of tea this morning.

After reading through all of this thread again, I have come to the conclusion that I simply don't care about CLogging.
A very minor hiccup to tiny number of folks, that would require jumping through hoops to solve. IMO a waste of time worrying about it.
Sorry but there it is

I find it strange that things like board-flipping and mission stacking are openly discussed on the forum while the engineering bug was not.

That would seem to suggest the issues were rather different and it would also seem to suggest that those involved were well aware of that fact.

If there'd been threads on here discussing the legitimacy of making use of the engineering bug for a year, prior to it being fixed, then I think you might have a point.

As things are, not so much.

I suspect that it might be due to the limited number of PvP players whom actually post here in comparison to the number of PvE players. It's also probably how the 'unlimited premium ammo exploit' stayed under the radar for quite some time, even though I and a few others talked about it on here, and also were using the correct method (i.e. reporting it) to try and get it addressed.

Advocating clogging has always been considered naughty on the forum IIRC, I got an infraction years ago for saying clogging was only sensible back when the block function was broken.

It wasn't till early 2015 FDev made a statement on combat logging, and even then it didn't flat out call it cheating.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=105778&highlight=combat+logging

Even then, well into 2016 people were advocating it as a 'legitimate' tactic arguing it was the best way to 'grief the griefers'.

I don't cheat or exploit, so it's not my problem. I genuinely dislike cheats and resent being forced to play a game with them, I also resent the dev time wasted plugging the cheats/exploits they use.

Even IF you haven't deliberately mission stacked etc. Retroactively applying the term 'cheat' to what was a broken game mechanic can put you into that catergory.

For example I had a lightweight level 1 weapon mount on my adder that was a 'god roll' (it was probably a middling level 3, but by the by). Didn't do it on purpose, and didn't even know about the exploit until all this came about and I had it taken off me (which, for the record, before misconstrude 'salty' strawman arguments start, I felt was fairplay by the Devs). By you're argument, despite disliking cheats and actively avoiding them myself, I've cheated and deserve these extreme punitive measures being advocated by some which oddly only ever get brought up as forum consensus when it's open players who do it.

However clogging (although it makes some very upset) is really minor as cheats go, it's no worse than the constant cash exploits. Also if they ever actually stopped clogging, people would just menu-log (legit) or high wake (really easy) so this is a problem with no real solution.

I'm not even going to touch that or the attached strawman, but leave you with your own words.

"I genuinely dislike cheats and resent being forced to play a game with them, I also resent the dev time wasted plugging the cheats/exploits they use."

The bottom line is that clogging is cheating. Cheaters cheat and behave badly in the game. Kill clogging and you reduce griefing. They often go hand in hand.

Menu log is fully legal. It's just implemented a bit odd. If the timer was a bit longer(Just enough to make hi wake clearly preferable) and we could confirm directly, it would be a non issue.

Hi-wake is an excellent game mechanic. Everyone should use it. It should be kept as an 'I win' getaway tool. Perhaps even strengthened.
Any 'hunter' flying without cloud analyzer and decent jump range, should be left behind empty handed.

Non-SDC here.
So you are saying because you don´t like the way SDC are playing the game, it is completely fine that FDev have repeatedly lied about taking action against cheating?

I think that is especially interesting since they HAVE taken action against PvPers eg. removing weapons, banning accounts of children (that were not involved) of people who have invaded mobius or banning people for using mines in stations instead of fixing the issue that you shouldn´t be able to fire them in the first place, while they are doing nothing about people who are combat logging and thus spoiling the game for eg. bounty hunters and pirates? Roles that were advertised in the initial Kickstarter?

Sorry, but I don´t see how the playstyle of the faction that brought evidence for this issue matters. I think FDev´s way to deal with these issues and the way they are lying about it is just sad.

I'd welcome an engineer recipe for FSD that does what i originally thought
the FSD boot time recipe would do:
Reduce time for FSD to recharge after dropping
Reduce time loading the FSD

That would be an option for both sides in an encounter,
since the time it takes to scan a wake, align and spin up the drive is sufficient for the
target to be long gone, not counting in exceptionally good FSD wake fast scan rolls.

Non-SDC here.

^^ exactly that!
Not only did FD take action against flawed weapon meta design,
the PvP guys are actually those who test a lot of stuff for the community,
like the weapon damage stats.
In the betas of 2.1 a lot of testing removing broken weaponry was done
by PvP interested people.

PvP Piracy really suffers under clogging,
to the point of people that have benn there
and doing it simply vanishing, as nothing is
done to adress the gaping holes, clogging
and bugs that make the job so frustrating.

like BMW drivers lack of indicators.

My BMW came fitted with indicators and they work just fine. It's drivers in Leeds & Bradford, West Yorskhire, UK, that own Vauxhall, Ford, Mercs, Toyotas, VWs, Mazda and Hyundai that seem to have parts missing on their cars.

I think its perfectly fine as it is now.

One of my best experiences in my somewhat short pirate career was chasing a Type 6 who was highwaking to constantly avoid me till they ran out of fuel. :)

At which point, the Alt+F4 came into play. :(

Believe it or not, but the most common "combat log" is when Frontier logs you off during combat. When this happens during pvp you will for sure be blamed for being the bad guy...

I'm interested to hear about these "guinea pig accounts". I wonder what becomes of some of them (not necessarily the one in question) - I mean, accounts change hands on certain websites for upwards of $1000 dollars on occasions. With engineers unlocked etc. It's funny how the issue is never discussed.

Just a thought for the day :D

It was purchased as a new account during a steam sale, not pre-owned.
