Are there many other women on here/playing Elite: Dangerous?

@Dr Gentech . This is the only partly relevant data i could find regarding your question. I apologize is it so far out of date but may still be useful.

Generally, PC or console gaming with 'anything combat' orientated is a 99% sausage fest.

'Killing and explosions, its a guy thing'.
Sad if Elite falls into that, because Elite is so much more than just combat... Besides I like killing and explosions xD

I think there's also an expectation among many women I've talked to that games seen as stereotypically "for men" will be a generally unpleasant place, socially. They don't need to try any specific game individually to know there's a high probability of encountering crude sexism, r-word threats, or just general ashhattery directed at their gender, an expectation that is unfortunately mostly correct. I would personally love it if we got more women into beautiful, immersive space games like Elite (I love the game fite me), and I think by far the best way to make that happen is to make sure there's no crude sexism, r-word threats, or general ashhattery directed at women, trans people, etc. Once that is achieved (and known widely to be achieved) I think there'd be a lot more interest amongst women in playing a space simulator MMO.

Quick question: how do people get the avatars on the forum that resemble their Holo-Me?

Screenshot and crop. Go into holome and choose one of the categories that zooms in on your face

Protip: play with your resolution settings. First try cranking the resolution up all the way, regardless of whether your computer can handle it or not. You don't need it to anything other than push out a purty picture to grab a snapshot off. Take a screenshot (F10 button for me. Goes into Pictures folder), then pop in there and crop out your face. Shrink it down to about what the avatar wants (click your username in the top right of the forum, click the green box there with the D in it. You'll see the avatar requirements there) and see how it looks. If the pic looks grainy or blurry, try turning down the resolution a bit and taking the screenshot again. There is a happy medium where the picture will come out high quality, but not so high a resolution that resizing it down will make it a blur. If it goes well, it should be about as clear as my avatar.

EDIT: If you want that "straight forward" look that everyone seems to have (like in my sig), it's in your Codex in the right panel. You should have 3 different headshots you can snag: The codex straight ahead view, the kinda side profile pic up at the top right, and then whatever you do with Holo Me.

I've always wondered if that would be the case. I've never been able to quantify why, but even amongst the ladies that I've known who enjoy sci-fi, I've never met one who enjoyed space sandboxes the way the guy sci-fi fans I know do. My wife is an example: she plays Elite because I play Elite, but she'd never play it otherwise. Same with EVE. Won't touch any others. But she loves sci-fi. Her two favorite shows are Babylon 5 and Firefly. Her favorite game series is Mass Effect and she's actually playing that Outland game as we speak. But the idea of a space sandbox game? "If you get on I might hop on". And she's not be the exception to the rule in my life. I'm a programmer, and of my various friends, classmates and colleagues over the years had a few ladies that liked both games and at least generally enjoyed sci-fi, but a sci-fi sandbox? Meh.

I eventually just figured it must be that we guys are either easily entertained or have our heads in the clouds so much that we can keep ourselves entertained pretty well in sandboxes. But beyond that? I got nothin'. Could never figure it out.

Use whatever device your accessing this forum with? Though Im not sure how screenshots work on Xbox, I've only played PS4 This Gen

That would be a phone, always a phone.

@Dr Gentech apologies if I offended you with my comments - I genuinely meant no offense, but understand if I annoyed you.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care if the people I fly with are of any gender they identify as, it makes no difference to me.

But sincere apologies if I was a berk, hope you can accept I was just being daft. Have fun with the game commander o7

I appreciate the apology CMDR, I can indeed accept it o7 you have fun too!

That is actually interesting. Looking at that I'd guess... ~92% male, ~6% female, a few percent neither? But yes, four years out of date. Maybe it's better now?

Unfortunately I am on Xbox (hence my crusades for in-game replacements for the amazing tools the community has built! Good for VR too). I wonder if there's a way to get Xbox screenshots off the box.

I feel like a lot of the explanation for that is going to come down to how much a reputation of a game as being "sweaty" or "spreadsheet-y" coincides with said game having an overwhelmingly male fanbase, and a particularly "dedicated" one at that. By the way, myself and your wife have a lot in common haha. Mass Effect is one of my all-time favourite video game series, and I think a lot of women who are into sci-fi probably enjoy it. It's a good example of how to make a game inclusive for everyone, pretty much. Also it's just a bloody great game.

I suppose a lot of space sandboxes do kind of come across that way. NMS is the only one I can think of that isn't really that way. So we guys just like tedium more, I guess? =D

lol! Yea, gaming with her over the years has made a lot more annoyed by games that needlessly don't have both a male and female character option. Some games I can understand; Witcher series and the like, which tell a tale about a specific person that might be hard to make gender neutral. Fair enough. But I remember getting really annoyed with one of my favorite series, Mount & Blade, because you could only make male characters and there was no actual storyline related reason for it. She started playing the game, loved it but got tired of playing as a dude, and I couldn't figure out why the option didn't exist. Anyhow, the creators released an xpac later that introduced female characters and the damn community lost their minds. You'd think they'd stripped out a promised feature or something. These dudes were livid their safe space was being overrun by girls. I ended up shelving the game for a while out of annoyance at the fanbase lol.

So yea, these days I'm pretty appreciative of games that are a bit more inclusive for that very reason. It irks me when you have 1 gender choice now and that's it, with no real reason as to why.

And why exactly is the question important would be my question!

But to answer it, yes of course there is! Gender really doesn't matter coz in space no one can hear how high pitched you scream.

Check the steaming platforms you'll be able to see for yourself and maybe devise a very quick straw pole if it's really that necessary. At the end of the day no one really cares what you are, unless you're annoying!

Sci-fi sandboxes are devoid of interesting and meaningfull personal relationships and developments. It is just numbers and concept, which generally appeals less in our culture to women and more to those on the autistic spectrum. Which is why every post of FD proposing a change is filled with angry dudes yelling they don't like change. :p

While I think StewardScott's statement is hyperbolic, I doubt there is a tight correlation between streamer demographics and gamer demographics.
There is, we're both just too old to appreciate it, sorry ;-) I will never "get" the idea of watching other people play games unless it's for either educational purposes or I'm deciding if I should buy the game. That said I use twitch as a means to record VR gameplay and am beginning to like it :D

I generally dont like it either, but sometimes the people are actually great.

Depends what you mean by "watching other people" I guess... are you watching the game, or the person?

I "watch the game" when it's a game I haven't or, more importantly, can't play. This is especially true of older/retro games which don't exist for purchase anymore.

I "watch other people" usually if they're interesting or entertaining, and I'm not usually there for the game in those cases.
