Attacked by another player entering a starport

If another player makes an unprovoked attack on you entering a starport and you fire back, will the authority forces attack you too?

In this instance I didn't fire back and avoided entering the port but was destroyed before I could low wake. Cost me 10 million rebuy less the "discount" of 2 million plus my mission cargo of occupied escape pods.

Really unbelievable that any player would do that and there seems no remedy. I guess I should have fought back and risked notoriety.

If you fire back within the no-fire zone, then you become fair game, whether provoked or not.
You're attacker was likely sitting just outside the no-fire-zone.

These things will happen. It's not often (unless you're at a busy/common area), but ganks like this are just part of the elite "experience".

Not really unbelievable. As stated in a post or two above, they're probably just outside the "no-fire" zone to get away with it. Odd, though, that the station (or that fantastic security they always seem to have) don't notice unless YOU fire back in self defense.

Two or three options available:
1) Scroll through the list of people you've encountered recently. It'll show the name of the commander that killed you. When you get back in, go look for him with a wing of friends, hunt him down and blow him to atoms (or space dust / boil him up, etc).
2) Do the above but block him. If he's alone, you'll never see him again. He won't ever see you again unless he's in a wing with other players you haven't block yet, but at least you have the option.
3) Use Solo/Group mode.

Hope that helps.

AFAIK you only get fined, IF the Target is properly scanned as Wanted (basic scan is sufficient).
In theory a Wanted Ship can be fired up without the basic scan since V3.02 or so though, just have to be 100% sure it's definitely Wanted in the local jurisdiction. At least it's supposed to work like that now.

Just don't hit anything or anyone else and you should be able to defend.

PS.
If neither Station nor Authority Vessels reacted to the attack despite being inside the NFZ, you were not in Anarchy space and had Report Crimes = ON, report the other CMDR for cheating/hacking/exploiting.
Because then that's what happened.
(in the past, such Reports have been useless though, since there's historically no actual punishment against Cheaters)

Thanks for that, I just found him in the list. if I see him again then at least I wont be going down without a fight. Don't feel like using solo mode as I'm not gonna get pushed put of open play by some ...

It was in Anarchy space and I dont think the authorities were attacking him. Its probably as Andovar said, he would just have been outside the no-fire zone.

Or combine 1 and 2 - hunt him down with a wing of friends, block him in the instance, just after you watch him evaporate in space, so it's near impossible for him to retaliate.

Assuming you were in a clean ship in lawful space and had report crimes on, the offender should have been engaged by the authorities regardless of the NFZ, and would be fair game for you to attack. Firing in the NFZ only incurs a fine as long as the target is wanted. It's when you fire inside the dock itself that you are immediately destroyed as the NFZ is more strictly enforced in there.

Mind you long range weapons can hit people 6km away and if they stay frosty with heat sinks it's possible the authorities knew about the crime but couldn't keep a lock on the offender.

Edit: Ah, Anarchy space. You're not really safe until you're on the pad.

There is a remedy - block the attacker; then they'll not do it again. I only do this if there was no in-game reason for the attack though.

Next time, push on and try to dock. As soon as you lose your shields, activate silent running. With hope, your ganker will be using gimbals and he'll have nothing to lock onto. Also, deploy a heatsink for good measure/if possible.
